The Mormons are coming!

So a couple of (very nice) mormon missionaries came to my door this morning. They asked me if I believed in Prophets and if I still believed in Prophets today. After a very brief discussion they asked to come in. Since my house is a disaster (just got back from a trip) I said that now was not a good time… Which of course was followed by “when is a good time?” :banghead:

So long story short, they are coming Thursday. I figure if they are able to put up with the crucifixes, rosaries and pictures of Mary and Christ all over my house, and be comfortable with it, more power to them.

How do these things usually work?

Any suggestions?

Here’s a suggestion: Invite your priest over on Thursday. I suspect that will shorten their visit significantly.

That is a great suggestion. Actually our parish has a very feisty nun, I think that would be much better…

I am thinking that if things start going nowhere and running on too long, I am going to ask them to join me in the Rosary. That should send them for the hills.

How do these things usually work?

They’ll tell you their testimonies of mormonism, give you a “Book of Mormon”, and ask you to commit to reading it and praying about its truthfulness. They’ll want to come back to check that you have kept this commitment.

Give them a Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth. You can invite them to Mass, but I’m sure if you do they will ask that you come to their sacrament mtg.

They won’t join you in the Rosary, and depending on how feisty the MISSIONARIES are (some of them, the very young ones…can be very feisty themselves and might be quite willing to take on your nun…respectfully, of course. I hope.) it could be quite a conversation.

If it gets too full of controversy/dissension, I hope that the missionaries will cut their visit short. None of what they do is supposed to be about ‘bible bashing.’

I hope that, if it is a problem for you to say a prayer to our Father in Heaven in the name of Jesus Christ, you will politely say ‘no thank you’ and send them out the door.

By the way, the crucifixes and pictures aren’t going to bug them any.

And by all means, invite your ‘feisty nun’ over. Don’t know if the missionaries are up to her, but hey, it could be fun. It could be one of those ‘mission stories’ that the missionaries will remember fondly for the rest of their lives.

Stay strong and don’t be intimidated by the glazed look in their eyes; that’s natural in a Mormon… I’m not even joking about that.

On the serious side, while I respect their rights and have found most Mormons to be nice people, I personally consider it a waste of time to discuss faith with them.
A while back a very nice couple who turned out to be JW’s saw me working in my yard, and asked if they could talk about faith with me. I politely told them I was Lutheran and was not inclined to explore their faith tradition any further than I already had. They graciously wished me well and left.
So, for me, I simple try to avoid the situation.

Why don’t you take their message seriously, and put it to the test? At the very least you will learn smthing new, and a best you may discover that it is true. You never learn anything if you treat everything with skepticism.

I am 41 years old and have never seen a " live " missionary.

I wonder if it is location based or what ??? ( I live in Michigan )

I must say, being Catholic, I respect the dedication and work that these young men commit to. I wish Catholics did more of this.

At any rate, if missionaries knocked on my door I would warmly welcome them in my home and would love to share perspectives and a smile with them.

I have hopes of getting a free BoM out of the deal. I can’t pass up free stuff. Even though is sounds like it will coast me dearly with the DW. She is not amused in the least. I think that it is the Fundamentalist Protestant in her talking. Though thuroughly Catholic, it has a habit of poping up now and then

To the poster who is concerned about how I treat these missionaries… what about me has led you to believe I would be anything but civil with them?

The main reason for allowing them to come back is because I felt so bad for the young lady. She was obviously very very nervious (I almost wanted to tell her to stop and advise her that I was not her judge and to take a deep breath) and I have a way of wanting people to feel at ease when they talk to me.

Although I’m not Catholic in belief anymore (Agnostic–borderline Atheist) nor am I in favor of door-to-door conversion, I agree with you in your final statement. I enjoy mature talks about religion. But, since I’m currently underage, my father would kill me if I ever opened the door for Mormons when he’s not home.

I have every intention in doing so zerinus. Which is why I hope to get a free copy of the BoM out of this. I was trying to be funny, not skeptical. I was also being very serious. The opposite of funny is not skeptical or serious; not funny is the opposit of funny.

The title of your Bible scares me, but then again, so do heights.

Before this thread gets out of hand, I don’t want this to turn into a flame war against Mormon beliefs. I am just curious to know how these things work and what I should expect. I would really like to hear from people who have sat through something like this.

They were not very feisty. They were very shy and I could tell very nervous to be speaking with me. The first thing that came out of the lleader’s mouth was, “so… you are… a police officer?” I said “yea” but don’t worry you are not breaking the law.

If it gets too full of controversy/dissension, I hope that the missionaries will cut their visit short. None of what they do is supposed to be about ‘bible bashing.’

Glad to hear that I wont be expected to be the only one to do this.

I hope that, if it is a problem for you to say a prayer to our Father in Heaven in the name of Jesus Christ, you will politely say ‘no thank you’ and send them out the door.

The answer to that is simple. The telephone directory is your best help! Look up your nearest LDS Church, mission, area office, website, whatever . . . and request a visit. Alternatively, you can look up your nearest LDS church, and go and pay them a visit!
