The Ordination Of Women Priests

Take a look at the sacrament of confession. We all know how we males are, things go in one ear and out the other.

Now with all due respect to women imagine them listening to peoples confessions it would drive them mad. Tell a woman something and it stays with her forever.

God did not want women to hear confessions.

Not proud of it, but I agree. Men are better than women at “letting things go” (in one ear and out the other). Of course the women I know call that “selective hearing” and I make sure that I repeat that (so they know I was listening). 😃

From ORDINATIO SACERDOTALIS

"*4. Although the teaching that priestly ordination is to be reserved to men alone has been preserved by the constant and universal Tradition of the Church and firmly taught by the Magisterium in its more recent documents, at the present time in some places it is nonetheless considered still open to debate, or the Church’s judgment that women are not to be admitted to ordination is considered to have a merely disciplinary force.

Wherefore, in order that all doubt may be removed regarding a matter of great importance, a matter which pertains to the Church’s divine constitution itself, in virtue of my ministry of confirming the brethren (cf. Lk 22:32) I declare that the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women and that this judgment is to be definitively held by all the Church’s faithful.*" - John Paul II, 1994

Pretty definitive in my opinion…
Not just definitive. It was signed by the Pope with the words “is to be definitively held by all the Church’s faithful”
This is therefore an infallible statement.
That does not come from me. the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith have stated this.
Here is their Response Ad Dubium to people questioning the authority of the above statement from their own website:
RESPONSUM AD PROPOSITUM DUBIUM CONCERNING THE TEACHING CONTAINED IN “ORDINATIO SACERDOTALIS”
“it has been set forth infallibly by…” “Roman Pontiff, exercising his proper office of confirming the brethren (cf. Lk 22:32), has handed on this same teaching by a formal declaration, explicitly stating what is to be held always, everywhere, and by all, as belonging to the deposit of the faith.”
The matter is closed. The Pope has spoken, and defined. Infallibility has been declared.
It is rare for anything to be defined this clearly.

Not to dilute the import of the Apostolic letter nor the correctness of the teaching, but whether or not this declaration is in and of itself an infallible declaration is still the subject of theological debate.

It is still, as then Cardinal Ratzinger affirmed, to be understood as a correct statement of church teaching.

There are those who still argue that this was not an infallible declaration in and of itself, holding out some hope that the issue at hand is still up for discussion. That said, the Church had spoken, and Blessed Pope John Paul II clearly affirmed the teaching. These are the same folks who believe that unless smething is infallibly declared by the Pope (a rare event), it can be ignored. Good luck with that thought …

All the scripture I have looked at, that has been pointed out as the reason for only-male-priests, IMO, does not point toward keeping women from being ordained (tho I know that my opinion, or anyone’s opinion or “feeling” or “instinct”–even if they are Catholic–is not taken into account in the Church) even though it was at some point along the way as the religion grew interpreted that way.
Out of curiousity, what Scripture have you reviewed in reaching your conclusion, and how has the Catholic Church misinterpreted this Scripture?

It’s not going to happen. The Church, as Pope John Paul II has clearly communicated to all the faithful, has no authority to ordain women.
Even though everyone got the memo, some seem to think its still up for discussion.

It’s interesting, as being a priest is probably one of the worst “jobs” in the Church. Lately, I have been inspired by the religious, especially those who contribute here on the CAF, and have learned a great deal from them. There are noble vocations open to everyone, yet we don’t see throngs beating down the doors of monasteries, friaries and convents.

Pray fervently for vocations!

In spite of what the feminists say, the genders are not the same; each has its strengths and its weaknesses. The proof in this case is not in the pudding, but in the voting. Consider that starting with the 1980 presidential election, women gave Reagan only a 1% advantage over Carter. ***That’s Jimmy Carter, for heaven’s sake! ***In 1988, proving that it wasn’t a fluke, the ladies gave Bush a mere 1% edge over Dukakis. That’s Michael Dukakis, for heaven’s sake!
After that, things only got worse. In the next five elections, they not only helped to elect Clinton twice, but they voted overwhelmingly for Gore, Kerry, and Obama.
If a major league baseball player struck out that many times, he’d be on the next bus to Trenton or Wilkes-Barre.
Maybe that’s why they are not to be ordained.

“One must never lose sight of the fact that the Church does not find the source of her faith and her constitutive structure in the principles of the social order of any historical period. Translation: Church doctrine is not determined by liberal American jet-set philosophy of the day.” + Joseph Card. Ratzinger

Complaining that women can’t be ordained is like complaining that men can’t have babies.
👍 I used to be very torn up about this subject, but recently came to understand the reasoning behind an all male celibate priesthood, and how this is how Jesus arranged it, so we can’t blame the Church for His choice. We have to take it up with JC Himself. 😃

Ever notice that truth has become, for many, something that is either a ‘personal decision’ (meaning one person could believe in Christianity, and that is ‘truth for them’, another could believe in paganism and that is 'truth for THEM" etc. When ‘everything is true’, NOTHING is true.). . .or else something that is decided on by ‘majority rule’ or ‘conscience’ or ‘SOCIETY’ (and never by a bunch of 'bigoted old men in a backwards corrupt organization like the Church). . .

We’re expected to acknowledge everybody as being right. . .EXCEPT the Church.

We are expected to believe that it is perfectly right and just for men to marry men, women to marry women, and for people to just ‘drop out’ of marriage in order to marry somebody else, then somebody else, then somebody else. . .

But let somebody say that they think it is perfectly right and just for one man to marry one woman, for life. . .

OMG. You would think these people had just worn a mink coat to a PETA convention. The screams, the “You’re trying to FORCE your morality on me”, the wails of how we don’t LOVE anybody wah wah wah.

I see this with the so-called women ordination people (and I’m a woman and of the generation- 56 next month) who are supposedly the ones who got the whole dang thing going and should be supportive. . .

They expect us to consider their claims as equally ‘just’ to male only priesthood. . .but do they themselves consider male only priesthood an equally just claim with theirs?

NOT HARDLY.

The hypocrisy is staggering but who are the ones called hypocrites?

Have hope. We are still digging out of the rubble of the last 40 years.

What I always find so fascinating about these threads that question the Church about some theological issue or other, is that, it is initiated by a ‘Trial Member.’ Then, once the question is, for all practical intents and purposes, gets definitively answer,* there is no feed back from the OP.*
Yes. 🙂 Only usually it’s a more popular, ahem, topic. Give you a hint. Starts with “H.” 😉

This is just simply how it is.

The Church is the Bride of Christ so she needs to marry a man not a woman.
Duh, doesn’t everyone know that the Church is against gay marriage 😉

I think that will be my new response when people ask me why women can’t be priests.

Just saying it how it is.
Ah, God’s voice came from the clouds, telling you personally that he did not desire women to be confessors because they are chatty, and men are preferred because they are forgetful. Sounds reasonable!
