Great! Thanks.
👍

The next big celebration coming up is Oct 15, St. Teresa of Avila. It would have been Oct 4, but that was taken when she died. So they gave her Oct 15. I’m not sure why the 15th. 🤷

I wish we have cable TV in our apartment right now… 😦

A blessed solemnity of St. Francis!!!

Bro. JR,

Is it true that St. Francis was the beggar St. Dominic saw in his dream?
You know that you can watch most EWTN programs on your computer. Just go to ewtn.com and then go to Television, then down to Live TV English and you’re in.

The reason for Teresa being assigned the 15th, was because (conveniently) the Julian Calendar was replaced with the new Gregorian Calendar; and to correct the deficiencies of the old one, which accumulated over time, a number of days were eliminated. Therefore, the next day after the 4th of October, became the 15th. (She actually died as the 4th passed into what would have been the 5th, it was close to the midnight hour.) You couldn’t have two great saints share the same day; God clearly had a hand in when the Gregorian Calender became official. That old saying about no coincidences with God, he plans everything… 😉

Ahhhh, that makes sense. Francis died on the 3rd after vespers. That’s how we ended up with October 4th for the solemnity. I knew that Teresa had died on the 4th. I didn’t know that the 5th became the 15th. I did know that there was some compensating when we changed from one calendar to another.

Thanks. Your better than Wikipedia. 👍

We don’t have internet and cable tv at home because we can’t afford to pay for more bills. I only have access here at the office, which is a slow connection right now, and at internet cafes. I don’t want to go out at night just to go online. I’d rather be home with my wife. 🙂

Br. JR,

I want to thank you for recommending “The Perfect Joy of Saint Francis”. O got it today and I am already more than halfway through it. It puts so much into perspective for me, in terms of what is important and what is not and what it means for your focus to be on serving Christ. And what it means for him to be your all and all.

One of the things St Francis said:

What a different perspective of life.
I have read the quote and it is a little confusing for we must conquer self for the love of Jesu , i`d like to think that was a veiled use of father and son .

Also not being able to do anything without the blessing of he above is slightly contradicting or again veiled , for then how do we conquer self for the love of christ unless we are a chosen disciple or an extreme adherent which is not the same .
We all know we are loved by he , but what can we as is written ever give to him back , unless directly asked or more obviously maybe just an extreme adherent .

That might sound very awkward , and im not in dispute . Scripture prevails for he of valour but words of the wise can also fall on deaf ears .

There is the big solemn mass on October 4th at the Basilica of St. Francis. Don’t miss it. It’s awesome.

If you can get to Subiaco,you can visit the Benedictine monastery where Francis trained. If you have a chance, you can take a quick trip from Assisi to Ferenze.

Br. JR, OSF 🙂
Hello from Assisi!

I will not be able to attend the big Mass tomorrow at the Basilica of St. Francis. It is invitation only.

My wife and I are now in for the night. I can hear vespers drifting over from St. Mary of the Angels Basilica through our open balcony door. The Transitus procession was great! I wish I knew Italian so I could understand the ceremony in the Basilica. I’ll try to get some pictures uploaded tonight so I can share them with you all.

Pax,
Jason

Here are some pictures from the Assisi area on Oct 3. These are not in any specific order, but mostly show San Damiano, St. Mary of the Angels Basilica, Porziuncola, Transitus procession, and some other pics from here and there. No comments on the pictures just yet:

Thanks for the photos Jason, that’s the next best way of being there right now. I hope to visit next year some time and see the sights where our dear saint lived and died.

These are awesome. I’m so sorry that you did not get a ticket to the solemn mass of Oct 4. What did you think of the Transitus? I just got back from our own.

There is a page where they have the specials for this week. They have been doing both Franciscan and Carmelite programs, because it’s also the feast of St. Therese.

ewtn.com/tv/index.asp

I’m sure that they will televise the mass of October 4, since they always televize the daily mass. They’re running a special right now on Franciscans in China.

On Oct 3 and 4 they have all kinds of specials on Franciscans and Francis. I notice that they have set aside 90 min for the mass, instead of the usual 60. That would mean that the friars are going to celebrate it for the public. If it were a guest priest, it would not be as long.

I watched one of their specials and it was so good and informative. I gave me a deeper understanding of the spirituality which is so beautiful.
Blessings to you and all who serve as Franciscans,

Help me out here. Can you restate this? I’m confused. Thanks.

  • The Spiritual Masters are very rich, not just Francis. What makes Francis so unique is his resemblance to Christ. He sets out to do one thing, to imitate Jesus. In his mind, this is so simple that it does not require much explaining.
  • I got back from the Transitus at 9:30. It was beautiful. I had to preach. I was very nervous, but I think I got the message through. I was asked to preach on the meaning and message of Francis’ life and death for modern man. I had 10 minutes to do it.
  • I focused on Francis’ pro-life message to the world.
  • The soldier who abhorred war and killing.
  • The rich boy turned brother to the lepers and those whom society leaves to die.
  • The self-serving young man who accepts illness, blindness and the stigmata out of redemptive love.
  • The poet turned theologian, who reminds us that creation points to God.
  • The poor man who accepts life and death on God’s terms, not his own.
  • God rewards his fidelity by making him another Abraham, the father of many sons and daughters.
  • 785 years later, 1.7 million still call him, Father.

That 1.7 Million counting the Dominicans, Brother? Because Francis is their Father too! 🙂

No . . . if you add Dominicans into the mix, that would raise that number to over 1.8, since there are about 100,000 Dominican men and women.

The 1.7 million only includes professed Franciscans. It’s an incredibly large family. This is considered a low number. In the 1950s the number was about 1.85 milliion.

It is true that the Dominicans and the Trinitarians also call Francis, Holy Father. I have no idea how many Trinitarians there are.

Only 100,000 more (including professed laymen and the like)? I thought it’d be a bit more than that

The number of Dominican Friars is not as high as the number of Franciscans friars. The Dominicans have only one male obedience. We have over 100 with a little over one million friars. I’m not sure how big the Lay Dominicans are. The Secular Franciscans are the largest Franciscan obedience with over 500,000. I think that the Dominican’s number are elevated by the number of sisters that they have. I know they have very few nuns, unlike the Franciscans. We have over 20,000 Poor Clare nuns around the world.

Without the precise number of Lay Dominicans, I can only estimate based on the number of Dominican sisters and friars. However, 100,000 is not a small number in a day and age when people cry and whine about declining vocations.

There are three orders that have not lacked for vocations: Dominicans, Franciscans and Missionaries of Charity. For example, in the USA, I believe there are three Dominican Provinces of friars, while there are over 30 Franciscan provinces of friars. The Dominicans also attrack the attention of the scholastic, while the Franciscans attrac the attention of the common man. That influences their respective numbers.

Among Traditionalists, the Franciscans have very few vocations, whereas the Dominicans have many more. Traditionalists generally do not understand Franciscans and often misunderstand. The Franciscan attempt to go back to the 13th century appears to Traditionalist as something new or a break with tradition, not realizing that Franciscans broke with tradition after Vatican II and are not trying to reconcile with tradition . . . Franciscan tradition.

On another subject, I was disappointed that EWTN did not televise the friars’ mass of St. Francis. They stuck to the mass at the EWTN chapel, which was the mass proper for the solemnity of St. Francis, but the flavor is not the same when you have all of the friars and Poor Clares together. It was a little disapointing to see so few lay people at the mass. One would think that the people who work for EWTN and the local people would have been there, considering that the whole thing began with Franciscans.

They were lacking on March 12 for the opening of the Jubilee year commemorating the 800th birthday of the Poor Clares.

Several of the brothers were observing this. A postulant asked me what was wrong. The only comment that I could offer in return is that people are still in love with the ritual, but they don’t understand the connection betwen the ritual and the tradition from which it comes. In this case, they don’t understand that the reason they have a beautiful mass and a wonderful network is because of the legacy of Francis and Clare. People don’t put these things in context. When you fail to put this in context, you don’t appreciate the tradition and how it is the dressing over the framework.

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi
Code:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury,pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen
Thank you St Francis, for showing us how to live and love.

The Transitus was wonderful. I wish I understood Italian though. 🙂

To day was great as well. We traveled up to Gubbio on the way to La Verna. Here are some of the pictures from today: picasaweb.google.com/101260209706929530615/LaVernaGubbioOctober42011Public?authkey=Gv1sRgCNOquvzrq52W3gE#

I have a lot of video I’ll have to edit later but here is a little bit of the 3pm procession at La Verna: youtube.com/watch?v=mZZQ-T0tWPc
