The picking-up some Pampers or a gallon of milk Mass?

You mean if he chose to leave rather than change, cover or inside-out a horribley offensive shirt? I can’t imagine anyone making such a choice (unless their intent was to cause problems once they got inside of the church) but if they chose to leave I would try once more for them to choose another option.
You keep avoiding it. No, what if he refused to listen to you and proceeded to attend the Mass because he wants to spend time with Jesus? What would you do?

You are right! I am not at Mass to impress you. I am not there to provide fodder for gossip about who is wearing what! It seems petty to me to be so concerned about looking down my nose at my neighbor when Christ is present.

A little Christian charity is called for, I believe.

LOL!! Smoking does NOT calm anyone! It causes one’s blood pressure to rise almost immediately, it causes changes in one’s respiratory rate, etc. If you can’t go an hour without a smoke you need to look into quitting. In the mean time there’s patches.

I can’t imagine someone stepping outside for a smoke during Mass. I saw it once in NY where it was pretty common in that parish. I have never seen it elsewhere.
I’m not saying it physically calms you down, but psychologically it does as well as the body craving nicotine (and whatever else is in those things). I’m just saying that you don’t know why this person is out there smoking. Don’t place judgments on someone like that.

Why should it even be your concern what people wear? I’d certainly be offended if someone came into church wearing a bikini. But thats extreme. If we’re talking about jeans, pants, etc., why should it even be an issue?
Well actually we aren’t talking about jeans. The thread was started with the description of someone who came to Holy Mass having just rolled out of the bed and walked into Mass trying to ā€œget it out of the wayā€ because he had a tee-time to make.

One real-life example I can think of is a woman who regularly attends a traditional Mass. The first time she came it was a mini- (no really, MINI-) skirt and a low cut blouse. Now she wears a nice pair of designer jeans and a modest, but fashionable top that goes at least to the elbows, and she covers her head.

It’s not what I’d call perfect, but it’s a big improvement, and I approve of her recognition of the need to improve her dress when coming to Mass.

Again, too much judgment here. The guy who looks like he just rolled out of bed, do we even know why? What if his job demands so? What if he’s a nurse or a surgeon or a fireman who was on duty the night before and would need to be on duty again soon? And this could be a weekly thing for the next while. If the guy isn’t wearing his jammies, its none of our business.

I’m sure in the middle of the Mass the pastor is peeking out the door to see who’s out there and what they are doing
You’re right it would seem. Fr. John Trigillio has said one EWTN that he recognizes the people during the Mass doing the ā€œone footed twistā€ as they grind their cigarette butts into the ground as they stand in the doorway.

Now you are changing your story.

Anyway, no one attending the Mass should stand in the doorway and smoke during Mass. That’s absolutely axiomatic.

Not really, because the person calms down.

And would you mind answering the question of what would you do if the kid refused to listen to you and proceeded to attend Mass while wearing the t-shirt unaltered?

They can’t be ā€œcalmed downā€ as their BP is spiking and their repiratory rate is going nutty…

I gotta say this. If I was looking into the Catholic Church and I attended a Mass and people were smoking in the doorways DURING Mass I would really wonder just what the heck is going on. It’s piggish behavior.

I think visitors to my parish already wonder why people arrive after Mass begins and leave immediately after communion. Bad stuff…

It doesn’t matter what’s happening. Psychologically, it calms the person.

Stop wasting time on something so trivial as this and answer my question!

Smoking DURING the Mass…

How boorish/crude can one get?

I feel bad for those young folks who dress ā€œpunkishā€ and are seriously interested in attending a Mass for the first time and this is all that they have to wear. Oh the looks they would receive and the judging!

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF THE KID REFUSED TO CHANGE HIS SHIRT, WEAR SOMETHING ELSE OR TURN IT INSIDE-OUT AND WANTED TO PROCEED INTO THE CHURCH SO HE CAN ATTEND MASS AND SPEND TIME WITH JESUS?

Did you catch it this time?

You know what’s sort of amazing? I have NEVER and I mean NEVER seen anyone smoke in the doorway of a church while attending Mass here in California. In fact the only place I saw it was at that one parish church in NY yet apparently it’s fairly common in some places.

It’s fascinating to me that an unbelieveably crude and boorish practice could take hold in some parishes to the point where people actually feel the need to make excuses for its existance. *That stuns me. * At some point in time, someone ā€œcouldn’tā€ (or didn’t want to) wait 30 minutes to smoke so they stood in the doorway and lit-up. When the pastor didn’t tell the people to stop (outside of Mass of course as not to upset the smoker) this emboldened other smokers and a new tradition had its roots.

Now we actually have people brewing-up reasons to excuse such a despicable practice. Thank God in never got a footing here or in the other parishes I attend.

The interesting part is this is exactly how other practices like arriving to Mass late and leaving early begin. The careless trendsetters push the limits and the other lemmings follow. When the pastor does not educate and correct it continues until it become normative, it becomes OK. What horrid hogwash. What a horrid legacy.

Oh, wait…it’s not.

I don’t respond to all-caps…

Perhaps the pastor knows something that you don’t. It may be true he doesn’t want to upset people, but maybe not! You don’t know!

ā€œpunkish?ā€ Is that a word?

The punk rock movement has NOTHING to do with black death metal sewage like that of deicide. Why did you just inject a new variable into the conversation? Have you not been allowing ā€œpunkishā€ attired people to attend Mass in your parish?

What would you do if the kid refused to change his shirt, wear what you would provide him, or turn it inside-out and wanted to proceed into the Church to attend Mass and spend time with Jesus?
