I am sure we will soon be inundated with posts whrere people ask is it okay to have sex during mass, or okay to beat your spouse during mass or okay to chop people up with an ax during mass because is a lot easier to engage in this silliness than to discuss whether we need to berate somebody because they came to Mass in shorts.

How come no one is saying “well he might have been chain-smoking but at least he was at Mass?”

As Cat (Hi, Cat, I’m another “Cat”!) stated so beautifully, we are all on the road to God. The important thing is that we come to Him–as we are, wherever we are. These dress police are self-appointed Pharisees, and deserve the same scorn Jesus gave them.

We’ve been over this before. Smoking is dangerous to your health and people breathing in your smoke. There will be children at mass. They would be asked to leave or at least stop if they were smoking.

How come? “A least they were at Mass” after all. You are suggesting it’s OK to potentially put someone’s eternal life at stake by booting him from Mass? Really? Where is your compassion? Why the double standard?

People dressing like slobs and ever coarsening the atmosphere of the Mass is dangerous to a lot of peoples’ spritual health. Why not deal with that in the same manner?

I remember attending Mass back east and at both exits there were people smoking DURING Mass just outside the door. It was horrible.

At some point one or more people tried it. Ther pastor didn’t tell them to stop so it grew. Now it’s a horrid legacy at that parish.

Same with clothes. A pastor with some decent people skills should be able to tactfully set a dress code without causing anyone to whine like a child. Had that been done in years past in many parishes, there would be far few problems today.

Just got back from Mass…wore my new jeans, new tennis shoes and long sleeve button down shirt.

Wife had to wear scrubs because she just did get off work in time for us to make the Mass together. She works tomorrow (hospital) and I start a 24 hour shift at 8AM.

Hope it met everyone’s approval. No one said anything afterwards when we did our usual visit outside.

She didn’t have the (literally) 90 seconds necessary to put on a simple dress? I have been hiking with women who kicked-off their boots, dropped a very simple dress over their heads and slid into sandals in less than 2 minutes in the parking lot of a restaurant.

People have different personal standards though.

Scrubs and the like have become de rigeour at Mass. You certainly wouldn’t see that at other, lesser Christian worship services, thanks be to God.

She didn’t have the (literally) 90 seconds necessary to put on a simple dress? I have been hiking with women who kicked-off their boots, dropped a very simple dress over their heads and slid into sandals in less than 2 minutes in the parking lot of a restaurant.

Scrubs are what people wear that work at hospitals. And we just did make it in the door on time.

Ya know, I am very glad that I have never run into someone like you at any Church I have ever attended, because if I did, I know that I would have never come back.

Your sanctimonious attitude is really getting tiring.

The bottom line is that she chose not to change clothes because it was clearly not important to here. It was not because she did not have 2 minutes to change. That much is crystal clear.

Talk about judging others! You’d never know if you attended Mass with me. I don’t comment about people who dress inapporpriately for the Mass. They aren’t going to change. You have a most offensive attitude. My wife doesn’t miss a Mass, she gets off work drives straight home and we leave for the Mass, barely getting there in time.

Judge on brother, we find making the Mass more important than what we’re wearing. I’d like to know how that ‘jump suit’ was more appropriate than anything we wear?

I’m done. You are a Pharisee, and I’m sorry for you. I’ll pray that Jesus our Savior will open your mind and heal your hard heart when I go to Mass tomorrow morning–in my capris and sandals. I trust what’s left showing of my 62-year old legs and feet won’t be a distraction to all those randy young men in our parish who come to Mass to check me out. (Although I do wear a rather nice pink polish on my toenails. No-go, I suppose, huh?) Oh, and I’ll try to remember to comb my hair…)

It truly is sad that so many Catholics think so little of the Mass that they get angry should anyone even suggest there should be a minimal dress code. That’s definately sad and that’s on them. So are their venomous attacks on those who would like to see an end to people dressing like slobs at Mass.

It’s actually quite sad that a pastor would have to set a dress code to ensure that people did not wear things like: shorts, short skirts, tank-tops, revealing tops, sporting uniforms, etc. etc. People should know better based on how they were raised.

I wore shorts to my tiny Eastern parish one time. It was horridly hot/humid, I had just come from Mass after stopping at home to change clothes (they were completely sweated-out along with my cassock and surplice.) They were bermudas, nothing racy but my former eastern pastor didn’t let it pass. After Divine Liturgy he said something like “ElToro, is it really so hot that you had to wear shorts to the Divine Liturgy? Really? This is after all, heaven on earth.”

He said it in front of others in a gentle yet corrective manner." He even chided me a bit – with great skill and caring. I grinned and accepted his instruction. More important, about a dozen people watched as he addressed the situation directly but with love. With others it might well have been done in private away from the Divine Liturgy.

Pastors need the skill and the resolve to do just this. Too often they are either afraid or they just don’t want to make the effort. And no, he did not have to give something else up because he spoke to me for about 90 seconds…

Nobody’s getting angry over a suggestion of a “minimal dress code.” Just over a certain perceived lack of charity, and maybe even sense – there’s really no comparison between wearing scrubs to Mass when you have to come straight from work, and on the other hand wearing shorts, flip-flops, ripped jeans, mini-skirts, etc.
I expect you’d criticize the athletic shoes I’ve had to wear to Mass for the past few weeks due to a foot injury.
