A mother or father devoting all their energy into raising a little one or little ones IS building a larger society.
That’s very true, but isn’t it better if children are raised by a mother AND a father?

I could not pick any of these choices. What about women who remain single or are either discerning or have entered the religious life as a nun? I do very much respect the choice of being a wife or mother, but even the bible says “marriage is not for everyone”. (I forgot the exact quote or where it’s located in the Bible):o
Sorry I didn’t include those choices! I was thinking more about choices for married women rather than women altogether.

My husband and i have decided to put off having children until our careers are up and running and i can stay at home the majority of the time. i intend on working at least part time when i become a mother. i have to feel like im contributing financially to my home and also i dont think its selfish or for personal gain if a woman wants a career and to be successful at it. theres a lot to be said for the stay at home moms but theres also a lot to be said for a woman who shows her daughters women can do anything and do not have to be chained to a stove all day. my mom showed me that and taught me to be independent and capable on my own and that a career is always a noble thing to have. the one thing no one can ever take from you is your education. she burned that into us. im proud to work and to be a contributor financially to my family and not put all of that burden on my husband.

Wondering what you people think! 🙂
I think that women should be mothers, but I also think that if they want to do some work they can do it.

I have to agree with other posts. The question is too broad. I believe that women should stay at home if they have children. When the children are gone, working is fine.

Having said that, my wife does work but she is self employed so she was able to spend a great deal of time with the kids when they were little.

Bottom line, I think it is better for the kids and family if the mother is very involved and not working full time when they are toddlers.

Whew!

Uhm, did I miss something?? I thought women were liberated? The role of women? Isn’t this question a little condecending?

Tar, I’m not sure how many stay at home moms would appreciate what they do referred as being “chained to a stove” all day. I work part time outside the home for financial reasons but I would have no issue staying home if we could afford it. When our daughter was very small I did stay home. Staying home with your children doesn’t make you any less “independent” or “capable.” Infact working outside the home is the easiest part of my day. And there’s nothing more noble than raising up Godly children.

When I made the poll I probably should have asked whether women should be the primary caretakers of children without doing anything outside the home, or whether men and women should both take an equally active role in raising the children and building the larger society for those children to grow up in.
Maybe I’m a stick in the mud, I’m really not sure, but I think both parents do not need to equally involved in each type of way of raising the child. Mom could do most all the reading to the child, and Dad could do most all the throwing the child in the air. Let each one do the parts they are best at.

Maybe it’s because I was raised this way myself, but I think it is best if the kid can just be with the parents (whichever one) while the parent goes about daily life. I can magically fix so many things because I spent years sitting on workbenches or hoods while my dad fixed stuff. Sometimes I played around, but mostly I watched or fetched a tool or “held” something. On those occasions when in my grandparents’ care, I followed them around everywhere too. They didn’t suddenly become homebound with me there. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I also wouldn’t trade having spent time with *each *parent for the world either. I’m a much better person for it.

No one-sized answer. How about “This is a very individual and personal decision based on a multitude of factors,” ?
**Even though I voted for the last option, I believe, as you have stated, that this is a personal decision that must be based on one’s personal circumstances. **

**OTOH, I also believe that mothers should, as far as possible, avoid putting their kids in daycare centers for hours on end. I worked in the Infant Room of a well known daycare center while in graduate school, because the hours were flexible, and I can tell you that it is NOT the best place for a baby to be…No matter who well run. Babies need moms, grandmothers, or a home type of daycare situation, where one person does most of the care. **

**Children in daycare centers are exposed to many caregivers…and these caregivers often have very different ideas of how to raise kids…both from each other, and from the kids’ parents. **

**Children soon learn that the new car, the big house, and the right address, plus vacations and other perks of the " good life" are more important than they are. They know instinctively that they have been put into the care of others, just as easily as a car is sent to the shop for care, so the parents can be free to pursue other interests…such as careers and THINGS. **

**My daughter has worked part time out of necessity since before and after her three boys were born. I have been there to help her and her husband with the kids…I had vowed that none of my grandkids would ever see the inside of a daycare center, and have kept true to that promise. I has meant sacrafice on my part, but it has been worth everything…The boys know that their well being and sense of being loved and cared for are of paramount importance to their entire family. **

**Of course I realize that not everyone has the option of having a loving grandmother to help, and that some families have no choice but to use a daycare center. I am just suggesting that this may not be the best thing…and that perhaps a home type of situation would be better than the corporate daycare center. **

My convictions on this matter have come out of lived experience, and were solidified by the a book…“Following Christ in a Consumer Society, the Spirituality of Cultural Resistance”, by John Francis Kavanaugh.

**Sorry to have rambled! **

I chose the last choice. I don’t think women only need to be wives and mothers. I went back to work when my son was one-year old. It was part-time and I picked him up from a small family-run day care at 3:00 pm. It was a terrible mistake. He was so sad when I left him, and I missed him terribly. I felt like I couldn’t let my employer down so I didn’t quit, but if I had it to do over again I would not have gone back so soon. And I had a whole year with him which is more than many moms.

Then my daughter was born, and I didn’t go back to work after she was born. My son went to preschool part-time by this time, but I was able to spend a lot more time with him too.

Now they are both in school and I work very part-time. I am able to be up at their school volunteering and I am always home when they get home. I feel so much better this way. They are young for such a short time, and I want to be there to enjoy it and to give them the support they need.

Some women don’t feel like I do. It is true that some people try to make women like me feel like we are boring and dull, but I don’t care at all. I love being a mom. I don’t think that a woman who is bored stiff and depressed should do what I do though.

Can’t answer this question with the options listed.
If women have kids in the home they should only work if their kids are in school and be home when they come home.
BUT - I am for homeschooling. You could call me anti-public school. 😉
Hello:) My name is Lisa and I am an anti-public schooler too:D God Bless

Can’t answer with options given…

If possible children should be at home with one parent…my husband and I worked oposite so we could be home for our sons.

I am Not for home schooling unless its a special circumstance.

I like public school …catholic school if possible.

My husband and I are public school ‘kids’ as were our parents and theirs…didn’t hurt us…the parents of course have to stay involved in the school…and of course things should be taught at home…and church. Actually I think teachers get a bum rap.
It was teachers that help teach my autistic son to speak and helped us help him…

Hello 🙂 My name is John and I am a public school teacher. 😃 God Bless.

I did not pick an answer because the answer is really too complicated. I recently finished a Masters degree in Education, while pregnant with my second child. It was the common belief that it was a sad state of affairs because I would not be “putting my degree to good use” in a full time job. How sad! There is such a thing as education for education’s sake, and for using the skills and abilities I learned in school with my own children. In actuality, you can say that it is “best” if both parents have a part time job and both care for the children, but the reality is this. There are not many options for part time jobs for women wishing to care for their children and get out a couple days a week. These jobs pay poorly and lack medical insurance. In reality, my husband works a great full time job where most days he is home by 5pm, and I am blessed by that. But, that means I cannot easily work outside the home without some kind of daycare. In reality, every part time job takes me away from my children, and my home responsibilities, and adds a lot of stress on me, my husband, and them… all for 8 bucks and hour (not even worth the time to pay a sitter).

All in all, the reality of life is this. Motherhood is given by God, and is our path to heaven and holiness. If God sees you have a talent He wants you to use outside the home, He will make it possible and give you the time, resources, and ability. But, once you have kids, you really have to put them first, and their needs. It’s not so cut and dry.

God bless,
-Amy

Choice 1 - Women should be mothers and wives. It’s best if they don’t work.

Choice 2 - Women should be mothers and wives, but they should also use their talents to contribute to society.

Hmm?

So, then, mothers and wives who don’t work don’t contribute to society?

And what about women called to a life of celibacy? They’re neither wives nor mothers.

– Mark L. Chance.

I am one of the few women, so far, who have said it is best if a woman does not work.

I want to explain this. If a woman is a Mother, it is best that she does not put her main focus on working outside the home. The kids must come first. I mean, they really, really ought to be really first.

I worked with my first child and decided to stay at home for the second child. During the gap between them, I became Catholic and better learned the Church teachings on birth control as well as vocations. I now view motherhood as something that wanted me to experience. Any woman who has a child, has that child because God gave her the gift of a child and called her to motherhood. So, now I put motherhood above all else. At least, I try.

I think a mother is able to work part-time or able to work from home, but working out of the home for 40-50 hrs. a week just isn’t right in my opinion. Especially when you consider the temptation it causes. If working outside the home, then ecological breastfeeding is out of the picture, if not ECOLOGICALLY breastfeeding (spending lots of time with baby and nursing on demand), then fertility can return quickly. Most women do not want to get pregnant when their baby is just a few months old, so there is the tempation to use artificial birth control. How many Catholic women are using artificial birth control even though it is a mortal sin to do so? Lots. How many of the Catholic women, who chose to stay home, are using artificial birth control. I’m thinking a smaller percentage. Might make an interesting poll.

I used to have feminist views, but now I think women were designed to breastfeed their babies and working outside the home makes this difficult. God also built in a natural way to space babies, but working outside the home destroys the natural way of spacing. So, I think women have a lot to offer the work force, but I think we can do even more for the world, by working part-time for our parish schools and the Church and treating motherhood as if it is our vocation, just as the priesthood is a vocation for some.

There is a financial sacrifice and we have to be counter cultural to stay home, but I think the rewards outweigh the sacrifices. I’ve heard that more women are staying home. This is promising. We’ve seen what has happened to our society with most women working out of the home. I’d like it to swing back the other way. Not because we have to stay home, but because we want to. Not to be a slave at home, but so that we are not a slave to our employer. Many women feel they HAVE to work. A feminist now ought to be standing up for the CHOICE to stay home.

My wife is a mother. She does not get compensated for her work. Because of this, I believe her contributions to society are greater.

What about visiting the sick, PTA’s, La Leche Leagues, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Band Supporters, Catholic Daughters of America? There is a myriad of ways women, and men, can contribute to society without cash compensation. In fact our society desperately needs contributions in those areas.

Your choices are worded very oddly.

A woman does much more for society by being a good wife and mother than by earning a paycheck.
It’s a shame so many people pay others to raise their kids.
