The scriptures are Gods written word Christ is the living Word. The written word is living and Christ is written (in the hearts of those that believe).
Gods word is both written and living.
To proudly claim that your Church is not built on the written word of God but is built on the traditions of men is condemning.
The Church is the foundation and pillar of truth. You are showing yourself to be a typical adherant to the UNSCRIPTURAL “doctrine” of Sola Scriptura. No one adhered to this mistaken belief until it was invented by Martin Luther

In that case you’re screwed as the Apostles did not always act in a Christlike fashion - you would reject the Church the Apostles believed in because you think you’re too good for them, or because you have no faith in Christs promise that He would Remain with His One Church for all time and guard and guide it to all truth…
Umm you are distorting what I am saying.

The words were “most Christlike” not “perfectly Christlike”

…reading comprehension time…

Perhaps you should axccept the fact that only the Catholic CHurch was around in the NT, everyone else came later. For example, Mehtodists were a splinter group of a splinter group.

Which has more authority scripture or tradition?

They have equal weight, particularly since Tradition produced Scripture. Nowhere does Scripture define itself. There is no divinely inspired table of contents. Also, the Scriptures give a designation to the Church that is not given to Scripture: the foundation and pillar of truth. YOu must also remeber that there is no point of Holy Tradition that is contrary to Holy Scripture.

Since I am getting tired of quoting the dictionary every time this statement is made:

So unless you want to say that either your are not a religious organization or that you are not united, then you are a denomination. And if you want to claim that either the above are not true, then Protestants do not have denominations either.

So don’t argue with us any more. Take your dispute to the dictionary.
I think when you consider the myriad splintered Protestant denominations (33,000) one could argue they might have very well written the book on this subject. Within the Catholic faith there is much more unity.

Which has more authority scripture or tradition?
Scripture is a product of tradition. The two don’t run parralel beside eachother, but rather Scripture emerged out of Christian tradition.

Do you think Saint Paul knew his letters were going to one day be part of Scripture? Of course not. Keep in mind, the Gospels were written down after Paul wrote his letters. What exactly was Paul getting his sources from? Oral tradition of the Gospel stories being expressed verbally.

So if we were to base our Faith on Sola Scriptura, many Protestants would make the outrageous claim that Paul was getting his sources from the tradition of man?!

Sola Scriptura is flawed and only captures part of the beauty known as Christian tradition.

Which has more authority scripture or tradition?
Tradition produced The Scriptures as you have them.

The lack of knowledge SEPARATES the two.

Here, (In The Church that produced them) you will find that BOTH are part of the Three Posts or PILLARS of Christian faith, that point to Christ!

Tradition, Scriptures, Magisterium.

That’s how WE KNOW heretics and errors, whenever anyone takes one or two of the three and distorts or misappropriate The Truth.

A straight line cannot be determined by two points. It requires a third!

Anytime someone twists Scriptures, even Catholics, we can tell the error if they do not line up with ALL 3!!

Something, I’d wager, you envy!

It would spare all the church hopping, thinking The Holy One is doing the leading!

Now there are over 33,000 splintered Protestant faiths. I believe this is caused, in large measure because of their non scriptual assumption of the validity of Sola Scriptura. When Protestants come to an impasse on any scriptual interpretation, they historically have simply started a new church.

One of the most beautiful and sacred things about the Catholic Church (aside from the real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist) is our Sacred Deposit of Faith in which God talks to us in Sacred Scripture, Sacred tradition and Magisterial teaching.

Amen.

Also, without the tradition of the Magisterium, heretical groups like Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses, and even the hateful Westboro Baptist Church come out of the idea of Sola Scriptura,

The Bible was never intended to be interpreted by different people in different ways. As you can see, that produces anathemas!

why do protestants insist that each individuals interpretation of the bible is correct. —this could be a new tread. hope all are having a good weekend

Could you please provide a link where the 33,000 denomination exist. I suspect this is a made up number.

My phone book has 12. The phone book in the county next to mine has a few more.

Anyway, the Roman Catholic Church is a Christian denomination. It is not a Protestant denomination.

So let’s say the 56,345,289 Protestant denominations (if you can make up numbers I can too) are outside of Gods design.

It is pure speculation as to the cause of this.

Correlation is not causation.

Anyway, just because (for arguments sake) Protestants are wrong for their 79,234,891 denominations, it does not necessarily follow that Catholics are right.

Go on the internet and do some research. It is there.

The Church is really the mystical body of Christ. where each person dies to self and surrenders to the will of God In this manner we are able to see the face of Jesus in every person who is in need of our Christian charity. Justification through Sola Fide alone is not enough and if you don’t believe this then read Matthew 25:31-46. Faith with works done for the Glory of God.
It is our final test and last judgement. It will determine if we will be at Jesus’ right or left hand. With the sheep or the goats. we will be in Heaven or hell for all eternity.

alanjeddy in 100% right I look it up in the last tread about denomination its right on the internet and dont mahe up # to say you are right

The Church is not a denomination. Keep in mind, that the Church did not break from itself. The Church has kept a constant stream throughout history, and at various times heretical groups broke away from the Church. Those groups that broke away are denominations. The Roman Catholic Church is the foundation, thus it is not just another denomination, It is the fullness of Christianity.

Education is important! The number of ‘protestant’ denominations is not made up, as the others have shown you where to find their total.

You cannot have a ‘wrong’ unless there is a ‘correct.’ The trick is, finding the ‘correct’ among the ‘wrongs.’

The Truth is not a something it is a Somebody and His name is Jesus. In Matthew 16:18-19 “And I tell you, you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on eart will be loosed in heaven”.

In this passage St Peter is promised primacy over the whole Church, a primacy which Jesus will confer on him after His resurrecttion, as we learn in the Gospel of St.John Jn 21:15-18. This supreme authority is given to Peter for the benefit of the Church. Because the Church has to last until the end of time, the authority will be passed on to Peter’s successors, down through Salvation history. The Bishop of Rome, the Pope, is the successor of Peter.

Yup. You are absolutely right. Google can be your friend.

The source is David A. Barrett’s World Christian Encyclopedia: A Comparative Survey of Churches and Religions in the Modern World A.D. 1900—2000

I don’t want to get into debating this, but the upshot is that the same source says there are 242 Catholic denominations. There is an issue with jurisdictions in this source.

And the source does not specifically break his denominations down as to Protestant or Restorationalist.

And if you want to use the traditions the source cites, as closer to denominations, the source lists 16 Catholic traditions.

The lesson here boys and girls is that you should not use a source for purposes for which the source is not intended.

But this is off topic.
