…please, don’t misunderstand me… “God so loved the world…” its wonderful… but when someone gathers from that that all are saved or that one is always saved we are taking Scriptural text at face value and ignoring all of the Teachings of Jesus and the Apostles…I agree that it is nice to have tradition and the history of Christianity to look back to, but erroneous thinking and disastrous consequences result when you don’t check with the Word of God.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
It’s ok to take the Bible at face value. It keeps us from falling for false teachings.
ie: Non-Catholics reject Sacred Tradition and many sola Scriptura-lists claim that if it is not in Scriptures (extra-Biblical) it is not valid; yet, most use the “face-value” approach to both reject Church Authority and follow their own personal/organizational tradition.
I can cite Scriptures where St. Paul speaks of Sacred Tradition, I can cite Scripture where St. Paul speaks of the Gospel as Word of God while still in its inception (Oral Preaching), I can demonstrate through Scriptures the development of Church Doctrine… but the same non-Catholic Christians from my example would totally reject Scriptures, at least my presentation of them, and attempt to place a totally different value to Scriptural text…
…in the exclusion of the one Apostolic and historic Church many thousands have risen all claiming Biblical authority while simultaneously denying the Church’s Apostolic and historical succession–done also in the name of clear understanding from taking the Bible at face value.
