No, actually I received a warning from a mod about taking a harsh attitude toward fellow members, and I accepted it. So I choose not to take the bait. But feel free to carry on if you like.

It’s just the internet 🙂

I don’t know about Catholics prefering Halloween to All Saints day…I plan to pass out candy to the little kids on Halloween. But come All Saints day…my butt will be in the pew…I’m excited to see what it’s about…(newly returned Catholic here)! And All Souls Day as well.👍
We will too. It’s just certain costumes I think are inappropriate.

Can I dress my kid as a JW and have him knock on people’s doors? 😃

This is entertaining actually. I think I’ll break out the 18 YO Elijah Graig 🍿

Hey I got one of those a while back for posting something “mean” on different forum, so I accepted it. Good thinking you got there. 👍

Hi Jharek,
It’s interesting what you say re Catholic Africans. A year ago, I was, as usual, delivering a Catholic monthly newspaper door to door here in my small Irish town. An African gentleman cleaning his car asked me if what I was delivering had anything to do with halloween. I quickly told him what the paper is about and he was delighted! We chatted briefly and he said he would have nothing to do with this halloween stuff. I found it very refreshing to hear such sentiments from one of our African cousins. I believe they are taught a richly zealous Catholicism and that is great news for the future of our Church.
God Bless,
Colmcille.

Right, but in post #58, I did back off a bit
Ok, so a young child is spotted dressed as a hooker. I can see it now, people talking about how wrong it is. And it is indeed. But dressing them as witches and devils is ok ?

Perhaps everyone is right though. With all the filth on television, a costume might not be the gateway.
So, again, if you (or anyone reading this) saw a couple leading their child around dressed as a hooker, would you give it a second thought or think it was a bit much ?

Well, sometimes we have to bear the cross. And again, it’s the internet. If everyone posting here were in the same room, I doubt we’d be badgering each other in such a manner. It’s easier to be a Rambo on the internet 🙂

Well obviously I don’t defend the practice of Celtic paganism, witchcraft or necromancy. What does any of that have to do with kids dressed up as Dora the Explorer or Frodo Baggins begging for a handful of Tootsie Rolls? I don’t think the Celts even had Tootsie Rolls.

If my hypothetical child wanted to dress as Harry Potter or Hermione the witch or whatever, I’d point out that actual witchcraft exists and has to be avoided. I’d have already lectured my kids about Tarot cards, ouija boards, etc. But if they want to put on a big, floppy hat and carry around a broomstick… that doesn’t have anything to do with the occult.

I say this as someone who would not be entirely opposed to the state instituting the death penalty for witchcraft. But wearing a cartoon witch outfit and carrying a broomstick and saying “Transmutio toadem!” at your friends does not constitute witchcraft. Not even remotely.
Sorry for the slow reply, I missed it earlier.

Yes, as long as parents make it clear in that way, I’d think no harm would be done. I was never lectured in that manner by my parents, but it’s possible my short lived fascination with the occult had something to do with the fact my mother had a ouiji board. Indirectly. And I do recall vaguely, her telling me of a family member in a rural area that was a witch. It’s really not all that absurd to think impressions can be made on children when they are vulnerable. ( my parents were practicing Catholics )

As far as the death penalty for witchcraft, I’d tend to accept it if the church felt that way. But since the days of Papal Monarchies are past, seemingly, it’s really not an issue I suppose.

And I suppose if the Church decided abortion was OK, you’d be on board with that too?

Oh please.

If you feel that people should be killed because of their religion, join the Taliban.

I think it’s safe to say the Church will never condone abortion.

Ironic you mention the taliban. I see you are converting. Will you be up to weathering the approaching persecutions ?

Apparently, you missed some other posts as well.
Excuse me but do you even know what a real devil looks like? Answer: Nobody does. The little, horned imp in the red jumpsuit is just an artistic fabrication just like those toga-wearing humans with bird wings and glowing circles over their heads that are somehow supposed to be angels.

Hence, you’re comparing apples to oranges. We all know what a hooker looks like. Not so with demons.

You can apply the same logic, to an extent, regarding witches. Furthermore, just because you dress like something doesn’t make you that something. Would you revere anyone dressing up as Jesus or the Pope even though that person was actually doing it to mock our faith (like some liberals, atheists, and pro-gay activists I’ve been cursed to encounter)?

I think I’ve made my point.
Again, anyone can see what a hooker dresses like. Can you tell me how one can dress something that doesn’t have a definite appearance?

No worries, Trent. There is nothing you can type that would offend me enough to go to the mods over. I don’t participate in “guilt trips”.

Happy Halloween! I think I am going as Lily Munster.😉

I think it’s safe to say the Church will never condone killing anyone for their religion, either. If they did, I’d be the first to pack up and walk out. I’m not inclined to accept wrongdoing no matter who condones it.

Forgot to update…:o…I did join the Church at Easter Vigil. And no one seems to give a flying rat’s patootie, or at least doesn’t have the cajones to say so to my face. Since I’m also not inclined to care about what other people think about me, it’s all good. 😉

Hi Jharek,
Thank you for your reply.
As above in bold, I did not say that actually. However, you would be correct in your assumption if you were referring to any active participation in discredited ritual. I happen to be a Catholic and as such I understand the reasoning behind my joyous Faith. I am indeed proud of my history and I see the spiritual progression of man in its timeline; and then the central act of our Faith in the salvation of man. Therefore we view our history through the prism of that salvation. And thus halloween and all such pagan customs can be put in their proper perspective; without, of course, losing their due respect in historical appreciation. So therefore our Faith teaches us priorities.
God Bless,
Colmcille.

LOL…I love Halloween! It’s alive and well in our house. So is the “santa lie” as I’m hearing it so sadly called on CAF lately. Apparently the hardcore folks who are trying to de-cafeteriacize themselves no feel it necessary to bash Halloween and Santa Claus. I’m sure the evil Tooth Fairy and leprachauns are next 😦
Maybe we didn’t get the memo…because we celebrate Halloween.

Now that you mention, its usually psycho-thriller depictions of Satan that I find more frightening than your goofy red-imp cartoon cutout or your boss-monster archfiend from hell.

You know with all this aversion by some Catholics here to all things “pagan”, I’m surprised that the subject of teaching mythology (heck, any mythology be it Greek, Irish, Celt, or Japanese) hasn’t been brought up. I wonder how these guys feel towards all those archaeologists, historians, and folklorists who have to learn and appreciate such things in order to do their job. Guess they oughta quit and start heading to the convent/seminary eh?
