Some more pictures of the papal apartment:
The pope’s office:

This office I actually know. I have never been in his office in the Vatican. But I have been in his old office at the Congregation for the Faith. He had the entire room a the Vatican painted and furnished exactly like his old office. I’m not sure if they’re the same size. His old office was not very large. I would say about 20 x 15 judging from the size of the bookcases that saw there.

The pope’s dining room / kitchen:

His dining room is small. It’s actually the size of a family dining room. There is a formal dining room down the hall where they have state affairs. Of course, if you look to the right, you will see a wall hanging of St. Francis.
One of the pope’s pianos. Not sure which room this is:

This is in what we would call the family room. The Europeans don’t call it that.
Another view of the living room, which also has a piano:

The pope’s private chapel, looking toward the altar:

I’ve been in this chapel. It’s very modern and very beautiful. Pope John XXIII had it redone. There were many statues on the altar and many religious artifacts on the walls. Bl. John XXIII had it simplified. The ceiling and windows were always the same. The altar had a communion rail that Bl. John XXIII had taken out. There were pews that he had removed. They were replaced by chairs that can be moved around. The altar is not against the wall as it appears. You can walk around it.
Bl. John XXIII was a Secular Franciscan. He once wrote that he was inspired by the simplicity of the San Damiano chapel in Assisi.

Oh my God. The sisters are showing their legs.
Just kidding. There are many sisters who work in the Vatican in different kinds of dress, from business suits to long habits. The ones who worked for Cardinal Ratzinger and probably still do, were from Spain. The wore a grey business suit, but no veil. They were absolutely delightful and very intelligent women. The one who took care of me when I went there spoke about five languages and had two doctorates, one in theology and one in Scripture. She worked for Msgr. Giorgio.
Meeting with President Obama in the apartment’s library.
