To Protestants: why do you do this?

You say the Catholic Church has the sacraments and the protestant churches do not. You are right - there is nothing in the Word of God except Baptism after you are saved.
Really? I beg to differ. I generally will ignore those n-C/a-C posts where “the scattergun approach” is used like this but I’m going to take the time to prove ths one wrong just because this poster has chosen to assert his rhetoric as fact when it is verifiably NOT so.
It does not say to baptize babies because baptism is a sign that you have received Jesus Christ into your life and are born again.
You are only partially correct here since the New Testament speaks clearly of baptisms of entire households, which would include even slaves and servants, and yes…even infants.

Moreover, a reading of the Martyrdom of Polycarp will show that he professes himself to have been a Christian for 86 years when he was 86 years old at the time. St. Polycarp was then martyred for his faith, but the best part is that he was a friend and disciple of St. John the apostle, so he came by his beliefs from an apostolic source, and yes, was baptised as an infant.
It shows death to the old life and you are in a new life as you are brought up out of the water.
Agreed, but as they say, even a stopped clock is right twice a day…
The problem with the Catholic Church is it makes it’s own doctrine - what happened to the Word of God.
It’s alive and well and active in His church. As I have so far shown you from history and the word of God, Catholic teaching is correct.

If you wish to decry infant baptism I suggest you read the linked article which says in part. "In Place of Circumcision

Furthermore, Paul notes that baptism has replaced circumcision (Col. 2:11–12). In that passage, he refers to baptism as “the circumcision of Christ” and “the circumcision made without hands.” Of course, usually only infants were circumcised under the Old Law; circumcision of adults was rare, since there were few converts to Judaism. If Paul meant to exclude infants, he would not have chosen circumcision as a parallel for baptism.

This comparison between who could receive baptism and circumcision is an appropriate one. In the Old Testament, if a man wanted to become a Jew, he had to believe in the God of Israel and be circumcised. In the New Testament, if one wants to become a Christian, one must believe in God and Jesus and be baptized. In the Old Testament, those born into Jewish households could be circumcised in anticipation of the Jewish faith in which they would be raised. Thus in the New Testament, those born in Christian households can be baptized in anticipation of the Christian faith in which they will be raised. The pattern is the same: If one is an adult, one must have faith before receiving the rite of membership; if one is a child too young to have faith, one may be given the rite of membership in the knowledge that one will be raised in the faith. This is the basis of Paul’s reference to baptism as “the circumcision of Christ”—that is, the Christian equivalent of circumcision.

I challenge Catholics to put aside the teaching of the Catholic Church and pray and ask God to speak to them through the Word of God - especially new testatment - Gospel of John, book of Romans and the letters written mostly by Paul through the Holy Spirit and let God speak to them. God’s Word is above every man’s words. His Word is the Truth - do not add to it or take away from it. If you want to know the truth read the Word of God.
A passionate appeal to Sola Scriptura which is new wind of doctrine that has only been around for about 500 years and in spite of assertions to the contrary (like yours) is not supported by the Word of God. I did what you ask, and look what happened By all means download and listen to the MP3 Bible study at that link for a glimpse of what the Bible really teaches on this.
There is no praying of the rosary in the Word (comes from pagan background),
Is that so? I don’t think you can prove this because it’s factually not true. If you wish to attack “repetitious prayer”, then explain to me why Jesus prayed the same prayer 3 times in the garden of Gethsemane. (Mt 26:36 & Mark 14:32)
no praying to the saints or Mary in the Word,
Really? “For the continual prayer of a just man availeth much.” James 5:16 and also Romans 8:38-39 “38 For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor might, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Hebrews 12:1 “1 And therefore we also having so great a cloud of witnesses over our head, laying aside every weight and sin which surrounds us, let us run by patience to the fight proposed to us:” I see nothing in the Word of God that tells me that being dead removes one from the Body of Christ. In fact, what did Our Lord say? “He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You therefore do greatly err.” (Mark 12:27, Mt 22:32, & Luke 20:38)
no purgatory in the Word.
Really? I have to disagree.
Salvation through Jesus finished work on the cross only. Jesus paid it all!
Well…there’s your 2nd of two correct statements of the day.
But if you would rather listen to man and to religion which is made by man go ahead.
The new winds of doctrines of men began to blow through the church some 500 years ago. You are merely one of the post reformation step children espousing those same errors.
God gave us HIS WORD - will we read it or believe sinful man instead.
:hmmm: This is precisely why I am Catholic. I believe His word as opposed to sinful and rebellious men.
May God bring you into the truth - THE WORD OF GOD
Thanks! Same to ya! 👋
Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum,

Thank you very much for the support. This has been by far the friendliest forum I’ve been on. I’ve spent quite a bit of time reading, and have just recently begun posting.

I will definitely be taking you and Church Militant up on your offers of PM’ing with questions, when I come upon something I can’t wrap my mind around.

Thank you again,
Becka
You are welcome. And I will say this also. CM as a former deacon in his Protestant Church and just a plain old great apologist, can frequently explain things in a much deeper way than many can.

I can do okay also, but Church Militant ROCKS! Truly an awesome warrior and servant of God. Just take a look at all the links he posted above with all the wonderful scripture showing where Catholic teachings are in the Bible.

That is the greatest thing I love about being Catholic. Contrary to some uninformed opinions, Catholics teachings are so very Biblical.

Your sister in Christ,
Maria

Yeah! Saw that! Did ya see that special on him on TV recently? WOW!

A couple of very good sources that I will recommend to you from personal experience:
The Catholic Home Study Service offers some of the very best FREE courses on the Catholic faith that you will find anywhere. I read “Christ’s Mother and Ours” first, but the first study I did was “We Believe…”, and I’ve completed them all and begged for more.

The BIble Christian Society has some of the best explanations of Catholic teaching you will find anywhere, and again, the price is right. (FREE!) Be sure to look up the Bible study notes offered under “Booklets”😉
May the peace of the Lord be always with you.
Just jumping in to say many thanks for sharing these great resources! I look forward to exploring them 🙂

Because one statement is false and the other is true. The Catholic Church is the One True Holy Apostolic Catholic Church. The 2600+ Protestant denominations are not. The Catholic Church has the Sacraments and there is no salvation outside of it. The Protestant denominations do not have the Sacraments and offer salvation only to the extent that are attached to the Church. Pope Benedict XVI wrote a letter to that effect while he was still Cardinal Ratzinger…

Hi! I’m a newbie …To finish reading the end of this thread, it took me almost two hours. Great arguments.

Do you happen to know Marsha the title of that letter Pope Benedict XVI wrote?

You can access it on the Vatican’s website:

The Latin words “Dominus Iesus” translate into English as “the Lord Jesus.”

Hi,
As a born again christian in a non-denom church–probably similar to what you grew up in,
This may be off the topic:
May I ask why you call yourselves born again? Aren’t all christians baptised in the name of our Lord born again? It’s kinda disturbing.

Born again Christian do not define being born again as Catholic christians and the Early Church define born again. The Early church and Catholics define being born again as when when are baptized. Born again in Baptism is a tract from CA that has the quotes from the Early Church and their definition of Born again.

What the poster is refering to is when she made the adult(sometimes as a child) decision to follow Christ. A believer’s baptism. A public announcement that one is a follower of Christ. Not a miracle from God that wipes away original sin, but a public declaration from the individual.

Catholic Christians could refer to it as a “born again experience” thereby not contradicting the terminology of the Early Church but acknowledging the misunderstanding that has grown in the last 200 years.

I actually started a thread on this once (long time ago) on why some Protestants insist that their meaning of Born again is correct and the Catholic Church is wrong even though it is quite clear that the Early church taught the same as the Catholic Church on what exactly “born again” means.

We just are not interpreting scripture correctly and those taught by the apostles misunderstood was the conclusion of most of the protestants on that thread who believe in a believers baptism.

God Bless,
Maria

Thanks for the important info Maria… 😃

Hi mom2three,

thank you for that perspective. as a cradle-Catholic I do not have the experiences you have had, and your point about what Catholicism is, and what non-Catholics are taught that it is, is a good one. Thank you. And it is good to see you here!!!

How’s RCIA going?

maurin
Not sure if you’ll see this since this post is old… but I haven’t been here in a few weeks… Life is busy…

In answer to your question: RCIA is going GREAT! I really look forward to it every week. I will start The Catechumenate stage on October 21! 🙂

However I don’t see much of a difference except perhaps in nuance between Protestants calling Catholics the whore of Babylon and Catholics calling Protestants heretics. Didn’t they use to burn heretics?
Blah, blah… Protestants killed Catholics, Catholics killed Protestants, Protestants killed Anabaptists, Catholics killed Anglicans, Anglicans killed Catholics… blah, blah, ad infinitum. Mozart, playing the blame game gets us nowhere. All sides participated in the bloodshed. So give it up already.
