I have read that book, way back in 1990. Very good book. Another good book on the Mark Hoffman episode is A Gathering of Saints.
A better book is Victims by Richard G. Turley.
What I found interesting in my research afdter reading the books is that there were LDS police investigators who left the Church over this. Apparently, they caught Hinkley in lies and could not understand how Hinkley could be so dishonest and how easily Hoffman fooled people who spoke to God.
This is a popular anti-Mormon urban legend. It is not supported by any facts.

President Hinckley was a better, more honest man than all of his critics put together.

Present company not excepted.
I will always suspect that the Church convinced him to plead guilty so that Hinkley and other Church leaders would not have to testify.
Of course you will. You don’t need to have any evidence for your baseless accusations.
Mormons will say that Hoffman pled guilty to avoid the death penalty,
Well, he did.

Thus demonstrating that Mormons tell the truth, while our opponents can manufacture accusations out of nothing at all.
but that seems odd since Hoffman tried to kill himself in prison.
He didn’t try very hard; both times he was “saved.”

But hey – keep on spinning your absurd conspiracy theories. If you could manage to make them more original, they could be quite entertaining.

I’m reading “The Mormon Murders” and it talks about Young’s near “go murder anybody who leaves the church” sermons. Anybody have any quotes from these “blood atonement” sermons? Also, is it true that many times when they were excavating or whatever land around Salt Lake and they found many skeletons that were from murder victims, murdered because they left the church?
Maybe they thought it was cumorah? 😃

Maybe they thought it was cumorah?
😃 Isn’t it odd that when we let them fo the leading, they avoid talking about the BoM? Perhaps they do realize that it was the product of early 19th century thinking, and taken from many sources?

I really don’t think we need another thread on the BoM, since I’ve been dragging my sig around for – what? A week?

Or maybe we don’t bring it up de novo because (1) we are polite enough to realise that this is not the proper place for proselyting, and (2) we realise that it doesn’t give us any common ground with the Catholic posters here?

Nah. That couldn’t possibly be it.

No polemical utility in that, is there?

First I’ve seen it.

Your leaders have taught that it is the foundation of your faith. So why aren’t you talking about it here? Taken as literature, it does carry some powerful stories.

I understand your game plan. It is based on a gradual undermining of the faith of believing Catholics.

I agree; but I’m not talking about it here for the reasons I gave. This isn’t a place to proselyte for our faith, but a place to defend it, only as and when it comes under attack.

Sometimes, as in my “LDS Doctrine” thread, a proactive defense is useful to provide a point of reference for threads like this one; but even then, I’m not looking to convince anyone that “Mormonism” is true. I wish only to show that it is defensible, and that the attacks commonly employed against it are flawed.

If that were indeed my game plan, you’d have to admit (however grudgingly) that it would be considerably more polite than a direct frontal assault upon the faith of believing Latter-day Saints, complete with accusations of “deception.”

But such is not my game plan. Since it does not undermine my faith, gradually or otherwise, do know that there are other believers in the world who regard their beliefs as defensible and even worth defending, it does not occur to me that this fact should undermine the faith of believing Catholics either.

Gradually or otherwise.

I’m only here to defend my faith.

I note a conversation on the MAD board commenting on a lack of Catholic posters, and low volume overall. Maybe there is a trend towards just downright ignoring that board and its inhabitants and prophet.

Perhaps if you were to spend more time there I would take your assertion more seriously. If Mormons did not focus so much of their proselytization efforts on converting Catholics, I might consider that assertion, on a general basis, more seriously.

You stay on your turf, we stay on ours, and everyone gets along, How about giving it a try?

Our game plan?
  • We respond to LDS questions and stated falsehoods, be they malicious or innocent :banghead:
  • We post 99% in this “Other Religion” forum, rarely starting a thread
  • We don’t create posts that take critical punches at RCC beliefs or practices.
  • NET, We are not undermining the faith of believing Catholics,

We don’t “focus so much of [our] proselytization efforts on converting Catholics.” We don’t focus on anyone at all. We proclaim the message of the Restoration to all the world. The fact that many of our converts are former Catholics (who do not then get all bitter and twisted about Catholicsm and obsessively attack it at every opportunity) is solely a function of the sheer number of Catholics in the world, and has nothing to do with any targeted proselying strategy.
You stay on your turf, we stay on ours, and everyone gets along, How about giving it a try?
If there was a section on MA&DB called “Non-Mormon religions” (or similar); or even absent such a section, if there was a constant volume of threads talking about Catholic issues, I would expect Catholic posters, such as Ceeboo, 3DOP and Soren, among others, to comment on them. And I would welcome their comments.

Talking about someone else’s faith without their (name removed by moderator)ut is a lot like talking about your neighbour behind her back.

Incidentally, if a thread opened up actually attacking Catholicism – for example, by quote mining little snippets from Catholic leaders and/or theologians in order to discredit the Catholic Church – I doubt it would last a day.

And if you’ll actually read that thread, you’ll note that the statistics show an increase in volume. And thanks for adding to that volume!

And please cite the forum rule that states that we should not participate here. Seems as if the forum owners don’t agree with you.

Given our stable theology, and the CCC, I doubt that you would find much inconsistency.

Given the myriad and conflicting teachings of your “prophets,” and how scientifically and morally unsound many were, it is very interesting material. Note I do not require you to call them doctrine like STM does. since I do not believe that Mormonism has any stable doctrine. I think that they range from funny, to sad, to hateful, to admirable.

Catholic teachings do not have that range, because of consistent doctrine. Yes, the Church has gone off-course at various times, but has always been able to correct her path. For some strange reason. :gopray::highprayer::knight2:

Gee, that’s funny, I know of 2 posters (lds) on this forum, that have started many a thread, and most of them were baiting tactics.

One of them has 49 threads to his credit, and the other 39. Of course, one of them is now banned,

One of my favorite threads involving both of these individuals had to do with mormon missionaries that desecrated a Catholic Shrine, posted pics on the web, and they defended them, saying, oh, they’re young, how do you know for sure they did it?, etc.

Trust me, there are more examples.

lol…one thing I have brought up before is the difference between the LDS Church and The true Church.

They claim to be like the early Church, but yet time and time again we have shown that is incorrect.

For example, Jesus (and Catholics) did and do not base calling on wealth. Go look at the 15 “apostles” of the LDS Church…most, if not all, are independantly wealthy. Jesus picked poor fishermen.

It has always been a church that had money as their god. Look at the two most prominent revelations since Joe: Repealing polygamy and blacks in the priesthood. Neither change happened until the finances were threatened.
I know it’s bad to judge by the looks of people, but the Mormon Murders book has a few pages with photos in it. I swear, all the men look almost exactly the same. They have that 1950’s “insurance man” look about them. Or maybe it’s a 1950’s “TV sitcom” look about them. It’s almost like they are all trying to merge into one thing/person/entity. I do at times agree with dressing conservative, but they seem to take it a little too far. I mean, when I go to Mass or any other church, they all do not look like one another.

So there are quotes saying they think they are “Christan” and yet some say “We aren’t Christian.” Confusing. What do they really want?

I would no more go there to post than I would walk into the hill country of Afghanistan with my head uncovered. I only lurk once in a while.

Well, i did a quick count of the first two pages
  • 13 LDS threads counted
  • 2 started by LDS members
The stats you offered are not relevant without knowing the total number of LDS threads started during their participation here.
  • How does rude behavior in the past on this forum justify current rude behavior?
  • If you are going to slander LDS with your fav thread, post the link to the thread!
  • How does rude behavior in the past, justify rude behavior today?

You have a real difficult time with relevancy don’t you?

1 and 3 are the same statement. The answer goes to there person’s posting behavior, which establishes their viewpoint.
  1. Nobody slandered anybody. You really need to watch what you’re saying here.
I believe Michael has closed several threads because they were “resurrected” old threads.
I believe he put a 5 year limit on it, but I’m not 100% sure, but here you go anyway.

Enjoy eating your words.

While you’re at it, do a google search for Missionaries desecrate Catholic Shrine. I believe you can still find the pictures they posted on the internet.

This is the forum to discuss non-Catholic religions, not the forum where only non-Catholics can start a thread.
