Although I loved the Jackson films and would love to see The Hobbit (especially as 2 films, expanded to cover the background material as PJ said in his interview), I’ve always thought that a mini-series might have done LOTR more justice. There’s just so much to cover and so much had to be left out of the PJ films that we Tolkien fanatics would have loved to have seen, that only a series could fit them all in. After all, JRRT intended LOTR to be a long complex read. And the technology is there to make really great fx for the tube. I’d also like to have seen a more exotic and beautiful Lothlorien and a grittier Aragorn and an older, more believable Frodo than PJ gave us.

I don’t think they could do the whole Silmarillion. It’s too big. Maybe just the Fall of Gondolin, the Tale of Beren and Luthien, the founding and fall of Numenor, or the story of Earendil. Any of those would be great.

Twenty-six half hour episodes for each book, and you can finally include Bombadil, and keep Glorfindel as the elf they meet at the Ford. Every single film version cuts out the Old Forest and those ancient Hill People, and dang it, I want my Barrow-Wights!

Who says Jackson’s, ahem, attempt at Tolkien is the definitive one? Nothing with Liv Tyler in it can be the definitive anything, in my opinion, and the rest of the elves were no better. They shouldn’t have had humans play the elves; they should have hired Square ENIX (the makers of the Final Fantasy games) to computer-generate some super-humanly beautiful people. Like Kadaji. Watch the credits of Advent Children if you don’t think it would’ve looked good. The only CGI thing in the scene is Cloud’s bike, the road is real. But you can’t tell!

Advent Children’s CGI technology is newer than that of the LotR movies. And the AC people still didn’t look that “real”. The last sequence only looked realistic coz it featured Cloud and Fenrir from a distant shot.

BTW, the Square ENIX collaboration wasn’t around to make about than 90% of the Final Fantasy. Squaresoft allied themselves with rival ENIX just a few years back… It was just Squaresoft who made the Final Fantasy games until 7 (This included the “legends” series and the first tactics game)… The Games 8 and 9 were made by the collaboration of Square and Electronic Arts. ENIX (Rival of Square and makers of the Star Ocean series) merged with Square in the 128 bit console era (PS2, GC, XBox). You might know this but I just said just in case you didn’t.

Never could get through LOTR. Got through the first book of 6, wasn’t that enthralled, then decided to just watch the movies. And even then, while the first 2 movies were good, return of the king was a letdown imho.

That’s my point. The elves shouldn’t look “real”. Besides, the people in FFAC aren’t supposed to look like real actors; watch the special features on the DVD. If they’d wanted real, they’d have done it live action (someone actually said that!). They intentionally stylized the characters’ appearance so it would look like a different world than ours. That’s what the elves need: they are fundamentally not human.

I see. Thanks for clearing that up. Like Gollum and the Ents and the Balrog and the Horadrim’s mumakil and the Flying Naz-gul etc… Now I kinda agree. Ididn’t play the FF-XI but I liked the way the ingame elves looked like.

However, I’m not sure this is inconsistent with the Christian view. The music did introduce disorder from the very start. However, the world did not “spring” from the music. The world sprung from God. The music coincided with a vision of the world that was to be.

Kind of like the Beatific vision, Satan hated that, that the second person of the Blessed Trinity would become man, “a lesser being” Thus his pride overtook him. Just Like Melkor’s Pride over took him…Interesting!!

I gotta say, I think they made the right decision in making them like men, I remember watching the cartoon version of The Hobbit, they looked hideous, they also had a weird kind of slavic accent!
They weren’t really consistent, because when the company entered Rivendell Elrond looked human, and the other didn’t.

Now…I suppose one could argue that since he was half elven then he looked like that…still, i doubt they had that in mind when they created him.

There already is a glimpse of the trolls in the LOTR movies, especially in the expanded version.

As the Fellowship is making their way to rivendell, you will see three stone trolls in the background. In the expanded version, Sam even tells Frodo that those are the trolls from Bilbos stories.

Just in case you want a glimpse of them before or even if, the hobbit comes out.

Has anyone else here read Tolkien’s Sanctifying Myth by Bradley Birzer? I just finished it. He really explains a lot of the details and where they come from. Tolkien was really a brilliant theologian, as well as a gifted writer.

Any other book recommendations?

In a recent interview Peter Jackson says he’s never even been approached by a studio (either New Line or MGM) about making The Hobbit. He’s got a lot of other films on his agenda right now. He didn’t even seem all that excited about the possibility of directing it…

Last month they announced they were going ahead with it. Jackson very much wants to direct it but has not been signed, though it has an 08 or 09 release date. He would like to expand on the White Council subplot.

Years ago (mid 70’s), I ran across an LP of Tolkien himself singing many of the songs featured in the books.
He used a church-like chant for the Elvish . .nothing like in the movies. . . somehow the album disappeared – lost in one of my many moves – wonder if anyone else has ever heard it and if it’s available anywhere?

After reading Silmarillion and Book of Lost tales. I found they actually dwarfed the LoTR saga…anyone else have the same feeling? They are all of course fantastic books!!!

TLOTR is more an epic romance than a **saga **- & it is anything but a novel. ​

I agree with you - the Sil has an atmosphere of immense antiquity that makes TLOTR look modern by comparison: which is very appropriate, as the Second Age begins 6462 years before the Third Age ends. That long ago from now, human history had not even begun to be recorded - there is no event dated 4456 BC. Include the period before the beginning of the Years of the Sun, and we are talking of “time so long ago, its passing is not measured in years”.

And since Iluvatar is God, He over-ruled the discord of Melkor and made it tributary to His own creative purpose, of which the other Ainur were the obedient (though very powerful) agents.​

Melkor’s disharmony is not the first thing that “happened” - the Music began before his disharmony. And even though he had “begun to conceive thoughts unlike those of his brethren” before the Music, while he was searching for the Secret Fire, we are not told that those thoughts were formally evil. So it seems the fall of Melkor did not happen until the Music - specifically, until the rebuke of Iluvatar, just before He spoke the word “Eä !”; & perhaps not until later than that.

I can’t see any denial here that God created all things “very good”.
