Now how tempting is that for those who want to know ALL. Seduction for the want of Worldly wisdom, and the Academic know-alls.
The Almighty says; For it is written, ‘’ I will the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.’’

1 Corinthians 1:19

‘’ That which is born of flesh is flesh; and that which is born of The Spirit is Spirit.’’
John 3:3-6.
Are you saying that Jesus wasn’t flesh? Are you saying that Jesus wasn’t a man? Are you saying that Jesus wasn’t alive, but only Spirit?

If this is what you mean, then Jesus couldn’t have died on the cross, because Spirit is immortal (and God is eternal). And if Jesus didn’t actually die on the cross, then his sacrifice on the cross was for naught, meaning that it did nothing.

Acts 17:11:
Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

I am only doing as much myself as we all do. I realise I could be very wrong.
Yes the Bereans did, didn’t they! But, for all of their daily searching of scripture, they were completely ignorant of Christ, even while He walked on this earth! How can that be?

Though they were immersed in scriptures, they completely missed Christ for their entire lives - until Paul taught them orally via the Apostolic Tradition.

John 5:39 Jesus told the Pharisees, “You search the scriptures thinking that you have found eternal life in them, but they testify of Me” Paul also testified orally of Christ, and that is the only way the Bereans came to eternal life. Scripture was not sufficient for them, and it is not sufficient for us to know the fulness of truth.

Repugnant? Those in John 6:66 also thought Jesus’ words to be repugnant. “Who can accept this saying?” Even though they believed in him and followed him - they were disciples, remember - they abandoned Him and He let them go. Why? They did not have the faith to believe that they could eat His Body and drink His blood. But, someone did have that faith:

“Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of everlasting life”

Peter received the divine revelation about Who Christ was.
‘Narrow is the gate…’’ Matthew 7:14.
Peter was given the Revelation that Jesus was speaking Spiritual (He by the power of the Holy Spirit) would give life to those who would eat Him (His Word - inspired of the Holy Spirit), not like the physical ‘Manna’ in the desert, even though it was given miraculously.
Let me suggest that you are not discerning this with Spiritual eyes, but by fleshly (mind) of intelligent reasoning. said with love and concern.

You are greatly mislead. You have just added to the words of scripture what is not there. Those who did this in Paul’s time were under his curse. Do you make yourself out to be smarter than Paul?

I have mentioned the ‘Narrow Gate’ (Jesus), because Jesus said ’ …the way (knowing) is narrow and very few find it.’ Many left Jesus when He spoke of Himself as the bread and life giving atonement blood. He was simply showing us that in our fleshly understanding it is a hard thing to understand. 'To those who have ears will hear what the Spirit says.
Praise Him!

I have not added any words to the Scripture of which I believe to be true (The Bible).

I don’t make myself out to be anything, especially smarter than Paul.
I recognise I am nothing without my Lord Jesus of Nazareth, Messiah, first to the Jew, then to the Gentiles, but all one New man in Him.

James,
If the Eucharist is central to salvation then it need to be plainly stated. For me, Jesus would have spent more time and words on it than we see in scripture; the Last Supper would have been a good opportunity to do so. Jesus would have emphasised the importance of the eating of the bread and wine if it was as central as the Catholic Church makes it. He does not.

I accept you may have a point with regard to the early church fathers. I will come back on that.

Take care,
Jan
*So you find the Real Presence (Transubstantiation) repugnant do you? Well you are not alone. All those disciples turned their backs on Jesus and he did not call after them “Hey wait a minute - let me explain”: Oh no - what he did was to say the following:
*51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
*
52 The Jews then disputed among themselves saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you,
unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day;
55 For my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink
56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me and I in them.
57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me.

*Jesus repeated himself SIX times! How much more explicit can he get! Hmm… yes the disciples also thought it was repugnant!

🤷🤷*

Sorry, but you have misunderstood me. Jesus definitely was in flesh. He came in the ‘Likeness of man’ Philippians 2:7-8.

…And Jesus died on the cross…And He said the ‘It is finished’. and bowed His head and gave up His spirit. John 19:30. His sacrifice was ONCE and for ALL who would receive it , by faith.

What was finished?
The finished works of God’s Salvation plan, through Christ’s sacrifice; Sin forever covered by the shed blood. (Atonement). The redemptive works for growth whilst we remain in The Faith of Jesus, for He says ’ I am the vine and you are the branches…Without Me you can do nothing.’ John 15:5. Catholics seem to believe that Jesus didn’t do enough on the cross, even when He said ‘It’s finished’. The Old Testament show’s us 'Archetypal’s of the coming ‘Messiah’ and therefore, when Jesus made His triumphal entry, He was the unblemished Lamb of God, who was foretold in the Old. He is the ONLY redeemer and Saviour of those who will accept. Salvation is a gift through faith. We are in a period of ‘Grace’, because God is not willing that any man perish. 2 Peter 3:9. 🙂
May His word richly bless you.

Yes, partaking of the Eucharist is a participation in Christ’s one eternal sacrifice (not a re-sacrifice). See Ex 12:26-27 & 1 Cor 11:26.

I’m sorry, I don’t see the connection between this quote and my post.

In addition, this quote is one line from a passage of Scripture, and doesn’t answer the questions I posed;

How did the early Christians understand Jesus words, did they understand them to be literal?
Did the author of John understand them to be literal?
Did the author of John believe in Real Presence?
If the answer to the above questions is no, when did people start believing in Real Presence and why?

Read the Apocalypse carefully. Even in heaven the same sacrifice is being viewed till the end of time. Catholics do not reoffer different sacrifices, but it is the same sacrifice at Cavalry present at every Mass. Jesus said in the last supper that His disciples were drinking His blood, even though He had not yet been killed. The lamb was slain from the foundations of the world, but how can that be if He died after the world was created? The answer is that the sacrifice transcends space and time. I would be very concerned if Jesus said that without consuming His flesh we would have no life I would also be concerned about the way I live if I read that Jesus would cast away people who call Him Lord and did miracles in His name simply because they did no acts of mercy.

By the way do you know what the todah (bread and wine sacrifice) and Passover consisted of? People ate the lamb.

The finished work of God’s salvation plan? Really…His Ressurection was not included in His salvation plan? His conquering of Death unto Life was not included in that plan? He is Risen, He is not dead…death was not the end of His plan for us!!! One thing you are correct on is that He is the Lamb of God…what were the jews instructed to do with the unblemished Lamb at Passover? They were to EAT the Lamb, not a symbol of the lamb…!!

Matthew 7:22 clearly states that Jesus did not know those who did ‘good works’ without Him and without being born again in Him, for ‘…Without Me you can do nothing.’ John 15:5.
