I don’t know if that’s the right way to describe it. A neo-nazi group HAS said that they would be patrolling. That’s accurate. Sanford police have said that they haven’t seen them and that is also accurate. So I think that perhaps the white supremacists promised to do something that they didn’t have the capability to do, which would make sense since that kind of group is probe to delusions of grandeur.

The kook who issued the press release is just that- a kook. He doesnt have anyone to send to patrol

There is a nice symmetry between them and the New Black Panthers, I guess. One group going on pretend headhunting missions and the other on pretend patrols to stop them.

Absolutely. Folks are equating the Black Panthers which have a small but still significant following and this “New” Black Panther group which is pretty insignificant.

The historic Black Panthers actually did some good for the African American Community and aren’t a racist group in and of themselves as Neo Nazi, segregationalists, and KKK folks are. Sharpton isn’t racist either but he fans the flames of racism as many on the far Right do. I’m talking the more extreme on the Right.

Now this New Black Panther group does appear to be racist just as many or most of Farrakhan’s group is.

I have avoided mentioning race in my posts, since I think everyone, regardless of race, should be able approach the issues of vigilantism, police corruption and injustice that this tragedy brings up.

However I would like to point out that it isn’t hatred that motivating those of us protesting this matter, whether we are African American or not. African Americans have a justified reason to be alarmed by the racial overtones of this case; we must all be concerned that kids can be targets just for the crime of BIH (black in a hoodie), and African Americans have often experienced racial profiling, which causes distrust of the police. So when an obvious injustice like this happens, African Americans are quick to react. But we should all care about this case and the cause of peace on our streets and justice in our police systems and courts.

The local FOX TV channel interviewed him and unfortunately gave the group a lot of legitimacy; while kooks, the neo-Nazi movement in the USA is not too be dismissed. It has grown a lot in the last few years.

Stromfront is the main White Supremist website and discussion forum and it has hundreds of thousands of members.

From Wikipedia:

The “original” Black Panthers was a largely criminal group that shook down merchants and dealt drugs to the neighborhoods they claimed to be protecting. They were basically a less organized version of organized crime.

Yeah, the murder of John Frey and other police officers and Betty van Patter really did wonders for the African American community.

It seems to me that the reactions people are having to the story as it unfolds tells a great deal of who has and who has not left skin color based prejudice behind.

The group I read about was the National Socialists something. Not sure if this is the same group that others have been mentioning. 🤷

Your point about the difference between the New Black Panthers and the Old Black Panthers is an important one; as I posted earlier in the thread, the New Black Panthers are actually under court injunction not to use the name Black Panthers for that very reason-the original Panthers have accused them of “stealing our history” by misappropriating their name.

Of course, if you’re a group that’s putting bounties on people’s heads, injunctions about not using a name aren’t going to mean very much.

They were a little more complicated than that. They did run food kitchens, medical clinics, and drug rehab houses. I don’t think it was a good thing that the original Black Panthers existed, but at the same time they were something more than the mafia (their food kitchens at one point were feeding 10,000 people a day).

Not to introduce a totally unrelated element to the thread, but the mob or the Irish Republican Army (both of which get romanticized by my own two ethnic groups) did a lot more damage and had a lot fewer redeeming values.

And they didn’t deal drugs. One of the very interesting things (and this is a tangent perhaps of interest to only me) is that both the Black Panthers and the IRA were ferociously anti-drugs; the IRA more so than the Panthers. While the Panthers ran drug rehabilitation clinics, the IRA was known for executing drug dealers and actually wiped out a fellow Republican splinter group over drug dealing in the late 1980’s. Not that shooting drug dealers in the back of the head or kneecapping them is exactly a moral or ethical way to solve problems, but this is what happened.

i think you have misunderstood my post. i am neither defending the young teen who was killed or condemning zimmerman. i don’t think that al sharpton or jessie jackson either one help matters when they show up on the scene to incite people and their emotions.
no, i have not seen trayvon’s facebook page. like i said, he was a 17 year old teen at a vulnerable age. we will never know now what path his life would have taken. this is a tragedy and i am waiting for the facts to come out and see what the legal system decides to do.

Why are so many people talking about race here? Why is it that every time a black person dies, people cry racial motivation? It’s ridiculous.
