I’ll try to keep this as brief as possible and open with my question first, then some background. I’m new here, registered this morning for really no apparent reason. I’ve wanted to talk to someone about Catholicism and I don’t know any Catholics, nor can I seem to step foot into a church to try to talk to a priest, so I figured here might be a good place to start.
As for my question, I’m interested in going to what’s known as RCIA, but I’m extremely timid about even showing up at a church at all. There’s a catholic church that I drive by every day on my way to work that I’d like to go into one day, but for some reason I just can’t. Every time I think about doing it I end up procrastinating. The only reason I want to even go in is to talk to a priest. And the only reason I want to talk to a priest is because, for whatever reason, I feel a powerful draw to Jesus and Catholicism. It just feels right to me, yet I don’t know why.
As for background, I was raised in a Pentecostal church and ultimately left it when turned eighteen and my parents were no longer forcing me to go. It was weird and I didn’t like it, and I’ll leave it at that. My parents tried changing to a non-denominational church to see if they could keep me interested there, and while it was better it still wasn’t enough to keep my interest. As a child I’d gone to an Episcopalian church with my grandparents on occasion and loved it, but my parents for whatever reason didn’t feel like that fit well with them.
After my grandfather passed away in 2011 I was wrecked emotionally. I had gone through a period in my teens and twenties of drug use, Satanism, Wicca; you name it, and ultimately ended up reading my way to atheism. I felt like I was a pretty strong atheist and had the matter settled, but when I got the news about my grandfather it just started a crack in the glass of my certainty. After that it’s been slowly chipping away ever since. I’m no longer an atheist, and I want to believe in God because I don’t want to believe I’ll never see my family again when they die. I also don’t care if other atheists see this as irrational or silly because it’s important to me, and this matter is central to my life. I’ve given up trying to be right about everything. I just want some sense of peace.
Flash forward to now (I’m condensing this greatly for space, btw) and I have this strange feeling that I won’t feel that closeness to God that I think is imperative to reignite my faith until I can take communion. Real communion though, as taken in a Catholic church and administered by a priest. I understand that to do this you have to be Catholic, and therein lies the next hurdle I’m facing.
My wife and I are both agnostic, but we’re both interested in Catholicism (me more than her), but neither of us can muster the willpower to just walk in. I feel like my atheism was responsible in a large part for her losing her faith and becoming an agnostic (she was also, coincidentally, raised in a Pentecostal church). As a result of this, I feel like I have a responsibility to lead her back to a genuine faith. But I’m the last person in the world who should be leading anyone, and I feel uniquely unqualified to move the chess pieces here for either of us.
So that’s my conundrum. I want to go, but I can’t seem to bring myself to it. I want to experience the faith and presence of God that Catholics talk about because I don’t recall ever feeling that at all in my life. And for a former atheist, the gut has to override the mind. I’m not interested in proving anymore that God is real or not, or that Jesus was real or not. To me, they are if I can feel them in my life, and I sort of feel like I do already. It’s like a weak, barely audible noise. I could be making it all up, but I read something in the Catechism that we’re given guardian angels to help guide us. I take a great amount of comfort in that idea and I hope there’s a guardian angel looking out for my wife and I here.
To undertake this would be to admit we’ve sinned greatly, which as you can imagine is a hard pill to swallow. It would also completely rearrange our lives in just about every possible way, and everything in my head tells me that I’m just being emotional and irrational, but my heart tells me that I’m headed in the right direction. I don’t know what to do, so I’d like some advice on how to get the ball rolling. I’ve muttered a few prayers here and there, but I feel silly. I don’t even think know how to pray properly, but I’m willing to try. I’m not so arrogant as to ask for a miracle, but I surely wouldn’t mind a helping hand.
Anyone got any ideas?
