Oh, no, you’re right. I just meant that this stuff is always becoming ever more prevalent and intrusive. At this point it’s still possible to avoid a lot of it. It’s just going to get worse, though, and eventually that will become more and more challenging, maybe even impossible..
I thought all this was already taking place. Apparently I have virtually no illusions left, but maybe a few delusions.
Seattle has these weird devices all over the downtown area:

It turns out that the FBI and Seattle Police Department track everyone downtown using their cellphones, and these devices which are on telephone poles, are constantly scanning and recording stolen information from every single person’s phone, including their adress book, etcetera, and also triangulating everyone’s movements, which is then stored in some database. It’s complete surveillance of the entire populace, but it’s unclear how often people’s phones are turned into bugs, using their speakers as powerful microphones. Very little is known about it, because the authorities do what they can to keep it secret.
Some people get around this kind of thing by using older flip-top phones, and simply removing the battery when not making a call.
