Typical CNN hit piece. Trump said nothing bad about Lewis even though Lewis apparently snubbed him, and apparently even praised the man and supports renaming the bridge.

Just basic liberal Trump hatred showing its fangs again.

It sounds like Lewis at one point called Trump a racist.

A lot of us would probably skip going to the funeral of someone who called us that. And that’s besides the other stuff.

No surprises here, either by Trump’s claims, or the support of his supporters.

Yes and as James clyburn the rep. Supporting jo bidon . if you ain’t black .

Blacks don’t recognize that the democrats have put them in chain’s.

The question was about Lewis’ legacy. All Trump talked about was himself to try to explain away his pettiness in not attending services for Rep. Lewis.

He doesn’t know anything about Lewis’ legacy? Either he does not watch the news or Trump refuses to acknowledge the legacy. Trump’s prevarications are pitiful.

So you go ad hominem. Trump said he did not know anything about Lewis. Was the report accurate or not? Trump did not say he “supports” renaming the bridge, at least according to Fox News.

" “I don’t know. I really don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know John Lewis,” Trump said. “He chose not to come to my inauguration. He chose – I don’t – I never met John Lewis actually, I don’t believe.”

Lewis, a progressive Democrat, received widespread praise from both sides of the aisle after his passing for his role in the civil rights movement. Lewis was arrested more than 40 times while protesting, was beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge on “Bloody Sunday” of the Selma-Montgomery marches and was the youngest speaker at the 1963 March on Washington – where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech.

“I was lucky enough to be there that day. I marveled at the massive crowds. The sight gave me hope for our country. That was John’s doing,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said of Lewis and the March on Washington. “But even though the world around him gave him every cause for bitterness, he stubbornly treated everyone with respect and love.”

Said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.: “John Lewis was an extraordinary man. He suffered for this nation, enduring what would have easily broken other men, so that future generations could enjoy the full blessings of freedom. … His patriotism urged him forward to fight for America with nonviolence and defend it with peacefulness. We are a better nation because of John Lewis.”

Swan then asked Trump whether he thinks Lewis and his story are “impressive.”

“I can’t say one way or the other,” Trump said. “I find a lot of people impressive. I find many people not impressive.”

Swan prodded Trump to answer the question, to which the president responded, “[h]e didn’t come to my inauguration. He didn’t come to my State of the Union speeches. And that’s OK. That’s his right, and, again, nobody has done more for Black Americans than I have.”

Trump, during a later portion of the interview on a different topic, said: “I did more for the Black community than anybody with the possible exception of Abraham Lincoln.”

Trump acknowledged that Lewis spent “a lot of energy and a lot of heart” on civil rights but said there were “many others” who did so as well. When Swan asked Trump whether the Edmund Pettus Bridge should be renamed after Lewis, Trump said he “would have no objection.”

Do you remember what Hillary Clinton did when Gingrich’s mom called her outside her name? It rhymes with ‘witch’. Compare that and Trump’s decision to be small about slights.

Did you watch the interview? The president was not disrespectful.
So will Axios do a hit piece and sit down with Joe Biden and attack him like this
interviewer did President Trump? Not a chance or if he did it would be questions
like “How have you passed your time during the pandemic Joe?”
" Which restaurnt will you and Jill choose to dine in at when you feel it is safe? "
“Have you read any good books during this downtime?”
" Have you and Jill tried any new recipes during the pandemic? "
“How often do you and Barack Obama speak?”

So you think Trump should have fallen down in worship of Lewis. He didn’t and you are enjoying criticizing him for that. Democrats would no matter what he said.

I didn’t know a whole lot about Lewis until his death. Looking it up, it appears he really did a lot for the civil rights movement years ago. But his record is hardly unmixed. He twice voted against Infants Born Alive acts prohibiting the direct killing of abortion victims who are nevertheless born alive. Living children, already born, and he was okay with smothering them or simply letting them die of neglect. He also voted in favor of every abortion measure including partial birth abortion.

We should not speak ill of the dead, no matter how vile some of their actions were, since they might have repented at the last. But neither should we sanctify people who have done evil things even if they have also done good things. Better to note their passing without undue comment.

No, he was petty and mean spirited.
So you think Trump should have fallen down in worship of Lewis.
That’s a rhetorical device of reducing a person’s stance to an absurd level. It is obvious that no one here said that. You set up a strawman that it will be easy for you to knock down.
I didn’t know a whole lot about Lewis until his death.
What you did not know is hard to believe. However, you have left the subject and now insert your review of John Lewis, which is not the issue.

You have nothing about Trump here, just your parochial assessment that John Lewis (in your opinion) ‘did evil’ in his life. Is that Trump’s view or was his reaction just as to Lewis not appearing at his inauguration?

Your commentary is revealing. Did you notice that you never addressed the fact that you inaccurately stated that Trump would support renaming the Edmund Pettus bridge? He never said that. You also ignored the fact that Fox News pretty much had the same report as the much maligned (by you) CNN.

Did President Trump say he was against renaming the Edmund Pettus bridge?

I don’t believe he did. I think he said he did not have a problem with that so he
is fine with renaming the bridge - he is not against it…

Trump said he “had no objection” to the re-naming. That’s far from supporting such a move or ‘being fine’ with it. No one claimed that Trump was against the re-naming.

What’s your point?

John Lewis (in your opinion) ‘did evil’ in his life
He certainly did. There’s no denying it. Voting against Infants Born Alive acts, voting in favor of partial birth abortions. Having a 100% pro-abortion NARAL record. That’s evil. I don’t know what Trump thinks about that.

As you know, my point was that I believe it’s inappropriate to over-praise a person just because he died. That’s particularly true when that person has also done evil in the public view and never (as far as we know) repented of it, even if he also did some good things.

I don’t care whether CNN and Fox print some of the same stuff. Why should I? I don’t worship either of them.

So you are saying when President Trump says he has no objection to the renaming
of the bridge that doesn’t mean he doesn’t support it? You are claiming he said he is against the renaming because he did not phrase the sentence differently and
say he supports it.

We’re not talking about ‘over praise’. The question here is common decency instead of petulance. You know which one Trump chose.

No it doesn’t mean he doesn’t support it (whew!); it means that he won’t oppose it. I am claiming that he said what he said and that the meaning is obvious.

So please explain what he would have against renaming the bridge?

You say he won’t support it. Why not? Yet you also say he won’t oppose it.
This makes no sense. @Nepperhan

This makes no sense.
I don’t support watermelon seed spitting contests yet I don’t oppose them. The concept is pretty clear.
I cannot speculate on why Trump would not support renaming the bridge.

From the story:

“I find a lot of people impressive. I find many people not impressive,” he continued. “He didn’t come — he didn’t come to my inauguration. He didn’t come to my state of the union speeches. And that’s OK. That’s his right.”

“He should’ve come. I think he made a big mistake,” he said.

Trump’s willingness to hold a grudge against what he perceives as personal slights — even against those who have passed away, such as Sen. John McCain — has been a hallmark of his public image for decades, though as president, it’s remarkable that he would not praise Lewis, who at the time of his passing last month was widely recognized as a hero of the Civil Rights Movement.

It’s just Trump being himself. His supporters support him and his detractors find fault.

I’m weary of this and just want it to be over.
