Trump fires FBI Director Comey

I think I’ve lost all patience when it comes to the right, particularly the religious right.

There is literally no way to spin Trump into being an acceptable representative for them. Not even a means to an end.

Trump is the man you want your sons to AVOID becoming.
Trump is the man your daughter brings home in your worst nightmare.

Any news that doesnt go out of its way to stroke Trump’s laughably large ego is deemed “fake news”. I’m beginning to think Trump simply weeded out the most politically challenged among us and gave them a platform, making it “okay” to deflect any contrary information because if you find enough people who are just as politically challenged, you can bounce the stupid off of each other until enough people believe it to make it (alternative) fact.

I can no longer take anyone seriously who claims to not only support Trump, but even more so anyone who actually believes he’s the guy “pushing Christian values”. Please. What is wrong with you people? Supporting Pence I understand. I disagree with him on virtually all social issues, but he at least stands for a lot of what the right does. But Trump? How much longer are we as a country supposed to continue taking Trump and his steadfastly stubborn supporters seriously? :nope:

Who is even going to look for a special prosecutor?

This story is HUGE with shades of Watergate when Nixon fired his FBI director Archibald Cox.

I did not approve of Comey’s handling of Hillary Clinton’s email scandal, nor of his bringing up the matter again so close to the presidential election. But you can bet your bottom dollar that is not why Trump fired him at this moment (and in such an unprofessional way so that Comey was not even aware of the firing before the media) and all in one day with so little written in the letter, which also made a point of saying it was NOT because of the investigation!

This is lousy politics on the part of the Trump administration and worse policy. And apparently on the advice of the Attorney General to boot.
That’s what I’m hearing too. It looks very fishy & Republicans are in a tough spot. I hope they have the integrity to put country ahead of party. We will see…

Chuck Schumer said, “If Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein does not appoint an independent Special Prosecutor every American will rightly suspect that the decision to fire Director Comey was part of a cover up.”

I agree.

Who listens to Chuck Schumer??!!

Link to letters

This links to the President’s letter to Comey, firing him; the AG’s recommending the firing; and the letter outlining why Comey should be fired: the last is the most interesting.

Here is another article dicussing the reaction of the rank and file of the FBI. This was shortly before Comey released the news of the re-opening of the investigation.

If I remember correctly, there were Republicans during Watergate who had the integrity to put country ahead of their party. But this is a different era. And while I certainly agree every American should rightly suspect something very fishy here, along with as Meltzerboy said, shades of Watergate, unfortunately I’m not sure every American will. For instance there are likely CAF posters who will circle around Donald Trump. And don’t forget this is a man who proclaimed he would lose no support even if he shot someone.

Thanks for the link to the letters written by Sessions and the other man. They recommended he be terminated. The president agreed.
I don’t know what business Comey had in California or how long he planned to be there,
but perhaps they figured it was necessary to do it today.

Who cares what Chuck Schumer said. He wants to bring Trump down. DUH

Not exactly. Schumer is the Senate minority leader (and a career politician) but as such may not have the clout in the midst of the Republican majority for his wishes to be carried out.
It doesn’t matter WHO said it, what matters is that he spoke the truth.

If Obama had fired Comey last July would the democrats have been as outraged?

Probably not, but Obama didn’t fire him. Obama understood that it would have raised suspicion that he was using presidential power to help Clinton.

But now we have a President who is under investigation by the FBI, firing the Director of the FBI & claiming it is to restore confidence in the FBI. This is only the second time in American history that an FBI director has been removed in mid-term and it looks like it was done in a rushed, mishandled manner.

Nobody at FBI headquarters knew Comey was going to be fired & he only learned about it by watching a news report on TV. Nobody believes Trump is did this because Comey mishandled his investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails.

I agree. There is really no other way to spin this story. The question now is whether it spells the beginning of the end for the (so far) Teflon Don. I think we can be sure the Democrats will continue to push hard on this one, and some Republicans no doubt will join them.

Trump made abundantly clear he won’t lock her up. Move on.
I hope she (Clinton) won’t get locked up. She is too old to be incarcerated. And if she ever does, it won’t be by Trump. But it does not look good for her with a new FBI chief. Comey said there is nothing against her but we cannot rule that out for a completely new person.

The notion that firing an FBI director somehow stops any flow of information in an investigation is laughable. Stop watching TV dramas.

Do people actually think James Comey was out in the field with a pen and notepad interviewing russian oligarchs? The intel that has been gathered exists. Comey reads the reports of field agents. To think this actually is an attempt to stop an investigation from moving forward is silly and insulting to a modicum of intelligence. Comey has proven himself a bungler and killed any credibility the bureau had with people on both sides of the aisle.

Not to mention, with as leaky as our intelligence agencies have been this past year, does anyone honestly believe if there was evidence indicating anything inappropriate that it wouldn’t leak, especially if this was preceived to be an attempt to silence the bureau. I love the show “24” as much as the next guy, but this is the silly stuff of serial dramas. Please.

As recently as a few weeks ago, Schumer claimed to have lost confidence in Comey. There were cries last summer and fall from the left that he need to be fired. So which is it - did he need to go, or not?

FWIW, Clinton was the last person to fire an FBI Director:

I wanted Comey gone long before Trump took office. He was all over the map and seriously hurt the bureau’s credibility. Good riddance. Hire someone impartial and dedicated to justice who knows how to do the job.
