McCain was anything but rigid. He’s actually one of the last of the old somewhat moderate Republicans left. He brought whackado Palin into his ticket in '08 in part because she was more appealing to the more radical portions of the party that McCain didn’t appeal to and she helped him seem more right than he really is in historical practice. That and over his career McCain has slipped further right and back again as needed (and he’s one of those guys who actually dares on occasion to walk across the aisle to talk and get things done). I mean think back to 2000 and the primaries where he was by far the more “liberal” Republican candidate when placed back to back with Bush 2.0. McCain is a true politician in the old sense who can slide on the left-right scale as needed but he’s always seemed far more at home closer to the middle than the latest crop of Republican candidates.I would argue McCain was, but Romney ’ biggest issue with voters was just the opposite of the GOP front runners now, that being Romney lacked, or at least failed to show even a speck of passion.
