TV: How do you watch TV?

We have cable and are thinking of swiching to DISH so we can get EWTN.

Our youngest son is handicap so we don’t go to movies, but read reviews online and rent them. We are old movie buffs, so the pickings are sparce for newer movies. They just don’t make em like they us to.😦

I enjoy the cooking and home and garden channels. Also old movies and some old sitcoms and two new ones. And when I am feeling brave, I will turn on Fox News and listen to them argue with themselves.

Bishop Sheen was an advocate of knowing what is out there in the modern mind. I think he even subscribed to the Communist Newspaper to know his enemy better. I think he would be appalled if he saw what was on tv these days.

We have satelite. The rules in the house are if it is sunny out or just not raining there is no tv on. And my kids are allowed one hour of tv a day(when it’s raining or icky out)and then it’s usually a movie such as vegie tales. Adults watching the tv is usually for recorded movies like little house on the prarie. We do watch the learning channels like health or animal planet and my boys enjoy the crocadile hunter. Other than that I think tv rots our brain. We don’t even get our local channels, so the news is out. Oh gee that makes me so sad. 😛

We watch very little t.v. these days. We switched from cable to satellite to get EWTN, and mostly we watch that, HGTV, and occasionally the history, medical, food, and science shows.

Everything’s gotten so trashy or liberal on network that we didn’t even pay extra for it; we have rabbit ears for the occasional must-see on the local stations. We sometimes rent a video, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Blockbuster has cancelled my membership yet again due to non-use. 🙂

I watch TV with my eyes, but that wasn’t one of the choices. 🙂

I squint. My TV has a 13 inch screen. :crying:

Oh well, it’s okay for Fox News and baseball. Go Padres!!

I feel like the oddball of the group here. I think TV is one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. I would never think of giving up my TV. My older son watched lots of TV when he was little and he could read at 4. And believe it or not, I watched hardly any TV between 1965 and 1973. I never saw an episode of The Mod Squad until the 90’s when, I think, Nickelodeon had it on.

That being said, I don’t watch the junk on TV like the reality shows. But I do enjoy being able to watch ball games, Fox News, EWTN, The History Channel, etc. And yes, I am addicted to Law & Order (all of them).

I don’t watch hardly any TV. My almost 4yr old watches Veggie Tales and PBS. There is just too much TRASH on regular and cable TV. If my other kids watch TV and I hear something that they don’t need to see or hear I make them switch the channel or turn the trash off. I think our world would be better off without TV as we know it today. Years ago (close to 10), we had cable and I loved to watch the old black and white movies on AMC! But you can’t find anything like those movies nowadays.

If I watch, it’s at work…when I’m feeding babies…The hospital has a video of a fish tank, and the sound track is classical music or New Age jazzy stuff (oops, if it’s New Age, is it morally acceptable for Catholics?).

My kids are better people without TV and they don’t miss it. Occaisionally, they can watch NOVA.

Usually flat on my back with my legs up on the sofa and in my underwear. My dirty socks are normally laying around somewhere next to the couch.:rotfl:

Oh, I have cable.

I am a maniacal channel surfer, so I don’t think I actually watch A LOT, but in three minutes I’ve seen twenty+ channels. EWTN to ESPN to EWTN to ESPN… “The World Over” on EWTN is my favorite show, can’t miss. With digital cable packages as structured as they are now, it is quite possible to hand-pick the channels you want and not feel like the tube is a complete den of iniquity. TV is pretty much what you make of it.

Last time I watched TV regularily, Seinfeld was on the air on network prime time.

Haven’t had cable for the last 7 years…don’t miss it much at all. We allow the kids to watch limited amounts (1 hr/day) of the content we allow. A far cry from when I grew up, and the tv was like a babysitter, but back then we didn’t have cable or MTV. We had The Lone Ranger, Capt. Kangaroo and Lucy and Andy and Barnie…

We also have some classic tv things on tape/dvd. How many 8 year olds do you know who know who Spanky and Alfalfa were? Or Opie? And the kids are trained that when an objectionable commercial comes on (as they always do) they switch to the PBS station or another channel. And since we are almost always around when they watch tv, hopefully the habit becomes ingrained and they will do the same when they are on their own.

Take Care and keep prayin’! 👍

Doc

We have cable, and we tape the TV show we like to watch. After we put the kids to bed, we watch our shows. The shows aren’t totally inappropriate for the kids, but they just wouldn’t be interested.

During the day, we do try to keep the TV watching to a minimum. If it were up to the kids, they would veg in front of the TV all day.

They watch their VeggieTales, etc, but they also like old musicals. They are fun to watch. My 6 and 4 year olds act out White Christmas all year long!

No TV. How could I find time to watch TV? I’d have to give up posting on the Catholic Answers Forums, and that would be BAD!!

Seriously, we gave it up for Lent several years back, but disconnected it permanently when a condom commerical came on during a 7 PM showing of Star trek. My husband literally unplugged it and we said, “That’s it!” And Honestly, I don’t miss it at all. I’ve read hundreds of books since then!

The TV screen is now used for the showing of movies ONLY.

This past Christmas my mother gave my kids taped collections of Carol Burnett and red Skelton, which they love.

Read Fr. Frank Poncelet’s book “Television: Prelude to Chaos” and I’ll bet you’ll give up TV, too! 🙂

Due to the harmful neurological, social, and spiritual affects of TV, my wife and I have decided to keep our Lenten fast of broadcast TV going until Eternity.

Our only indulgence is an occasional quality Catholic educational video or inspiring movie.

If it was a mortal sin to watch Gone With the Wind back in the day, just think how sinful it must be to watch the smut that’s on today?

If what was a sin 50 years ago, then isn’t it still a sin today? Does morality change?

If TIME is our most precious commodity as Christians as we strive daily for holiness and sanctification, why waste hours and years in front of the boob tube?

St. Alphonsus Ligouri said the most rewarding time spent on this planet is that time spent in His Presence in Adoration. He didn’t say in front of the TV.

Many spiritual books say to turn of the TV.

Secular book The Plug In Drug by Marie Winn is interesting also as it focuses on the social aspect–but not as good as Fr. Frank Poncelet’s book mentioned at top.

Since we’ve become a “television generation” the social involvement in church activities, community activities, etc. has gone done severely.

Just watch what happens the next time the electricity goes out in your neighborhood. What happens? You meet your neighbors!

🙂
