Panis Angelicas:
The real issue is control. These men want to control their women and usually their children. Not all are physically abusive. You can control women with threats against them and their kids, financial isolation and dependence. What you ask these men to do is completely overturn a very basic personality trait. It’s hard and really what incentive is there? To get their wives and kids back? They don’t want an independent, capable wife and if she’s demanding a new dynamic in the relationship, he doesn’t want her anyway. They are still able to see their kids and sadly these men just go on to the next vulnerable woman. It’s a very serious problem in society.

I’ll try to find statistics but this is the result of several training sessions with respect to child abuse organizations I’m involved with. We had several sessions on domestic abuse with treatment coordinators from the shelters. They ALL said “batterer’s intervention” has a low success rate. It may be that as a relatively new program, they just have not figured out the right approach yet. But to a one (and we had four different shelters provide DA training) they said the batterer is rarely ‘cured.’Could you provide some sources on this? I’d appreciate it! Post here, email, or private message. Thanks.
