Panis Angelicas:
Could you provide some sources on this? I’d appreciate it! Post here, email, or private message. Thanks.
I’ll try to find statistics but this is the result of several training sessions with respect to child abuse organizations I’m involved with. We had several sessions on domestic abuse with treatment coordinators from the shelters. They ALL said “batterer’s intervention” has a low success rate. It may be that as a relatively new program, they just have not figured out the right approach yet. But to a one (and we had four different shelters provide DA training) they said the batterer is rarely ‘cured.’

The real issue is control. These men want to control their women and usually their children. Not all are physically abusive. You can control women with threats against them and their kids, financial isolation and dependence. What you ask these men to do is completely overturn a very basic personality trait. It’s hard and really what incentive is there? To get their wives and kids back? They don’t want an independent, capable wife and if she’s demanding a new dynamic in the relationship, he doesn’t want her anyway. They are still able to see their kids and sadly these men just go on to the next vulnerable woman. It’s a very serious problem in society.

FWIW several studies indicated there was no significant difference between those who entered programs and those who did not. However the long term (40 weeks plus) programs were more effective.

Here is the summary at the DV website:

Yes, but progress will depend on recognizing their problem and being prepared to work on it steadily for a long time, without expecting rewards. Long-term improvement is more likely for an abuser who finishes the 40 week groups. CLICK HERE for abstracts that detail more research information on this topic by Edward Gondolf.

Hope this helps. Sorry to hijack the thread.

This is a man who, prior to stabbing his own daughter and her friend, chased people with a running chain-saw. He obviously lacks the ability to moderate his anger and, as a result, is a danger to others, specifically prison guards and other criminal justice system personnel. I find it incredibly difficult to justify putting him in a penitentiary where he can commit more evil.
I have had a great deal of sympathy for that position, but the only prison guard on this forum that I have seen weigh in on this thought that prisons were normally capable of preventing those on Death Row from re-offending. That’s what I go on.

But… if it is the judgement of the court, upon hearing all the evidence at sentencing, that the convicted murderer should be sentenced to death because he poses too great a threat to the prison staff or the other inmates, I think that is justified.

Some places simply do not have the resources to house Death Row inmates safely. In those places, the death penalty is also justified, even if the same prisoners might get a life sentence elsewhere.

To support your point: you have to protect life as best as you can… and the person who poses the threat is the one you must always sacrifice first. If ten people were bent on killing one man, you would kill the ten to save the one, if you needed to, yes.

I live in the community that this horrific crime occured. The community has been traumatized. And the community is angry. But the community has been praying for all concerned non the less. A number of services have been held. We have all prayed even for the father who committed these attrocities. But I think God will understand the anger at such EVIL. There was one interesting documentary in our local newspaper in regard to the “out of control rage” that had been repeated by many reporters. This particular editor thought the term “rage” that had been referred to repeatedly should have been called what it is…
“EVIL, PLAIN AND SIMPLE.” It seems there has been a number of parents murdering their children as of late in the Chicago area. A woman in Hoffman Estates repeatedly stabbed her 2 babies, one 8 yrs., the other 3 yrs. just about 2 weeks ago, and I just heard on the news that another mother in Chicago strangeled her 4 yr. old for disobeying her and then went back to the laundermat to finish her laundry. This just happened tonight. LOTS OF EVIL. You can call it abuse or out of control rage or sickness but I call it plain and simple…EVIL.

…or the expansion of the Culture of Death…
We’ve been warned that some do not consider young children to be “fully human” until they’ve reached the age of reason, etc…
Still, I do not propose the death penalty out of a sense of anger, but rather, because it is just in cases such as this.
