*I go to three different Parishes and one of them is Jesuit. I find Jesuits very permissive. Recently I forwarded an email I received about Georgetown University and the behaviour of Jesuits which is unacceptable - I forwarded it to my Parish Priest and he turned nasty and now our relationship has turned cold! I think he had a duty to reassure me!!!

We have to be very careful in understanding the Jesuits. They are an order with solemn vows just like monks and friars, which is the highest form of religious profession in the Church. However, they have few of the obligations that go with those vows, but all the rights and privileges. St. Ignatius did not want his men being subject to too many rules and too much oversight. They were to be free, including free of each other, so as to go where the Church needed them to go.
The only person who can ask the Jesuits to explain themselves is the Superior General and the pope. Provincial superiors and local superiors do not have this authority. Laity, other religious and bishops do not have this authority. We do not have the right to say that this Jesuit action or that Jesuit action is unacceptable. We can say it, but it’s only going to be interpreted as a violation of their right to be autonomous from us.
If you observe, Cardinal Wuerl was the only prelate who wrote a formal letter of concern about the Georgetown situation; however, he did not write it to the Jesuits. He wrote to the university administration. He was very careful not to cross that fine line and question the Jesuits. He has the authority to write such a letter to the administration, because the university exists in his diocese. He said that the university’s choices were unacceptable, not those of the Jesuits. He did not cross the line that you may have crossed.
A few years ago, Pope Benedict and the general chapter of the Jesuits reached an agreement. They would support the Holy Father and he would protect them from the rest of us.
If you sounded as if you were asking Father to explain his order’s actions to you, it may have come off the wrong way . . . especially, if the man is already gun shy. It seems fashionable, these days, for Catholics to promote hatred toward the Jesuits, condemn them at every turn, give them no credit for the good that they are doing around the world and inside the Church. They have become the order that Catholics love to hate and feel justified before God and their consciences in doing so. Which is not quite right either.
They have some men who are very good at getting into trouble. This is true. I always think of it as a large family that is always going to have some relatives who are magnets for trouble. Trust me, I have a few in my biological family. They’re good people who do dumb things.
Next time you want to know more about why the Jesuits did this or that don’t send it in writing. Simply approach one of them in a very humble way and say, “I don’t understand. Can you help me understand?” We must remember, Jesuits have no obligation to explain themselves to anyone except the Superior General and the Pope. We can ask for clarifications, but not for an accounting. Wording is very important.
