Arba Sicula:
This time it’s my own study that brought me to that conclusion.
There are other countries you can go to if you don’t like this one, you know.

The connection between my conclusion that our government acts as though there were no absolute moral standards and leaving the country escapes me.

Some statesman once noted that “nations only have interests.” So it seems.

vern humphrey:
Then what did you mean when you objected to me discussing problems in Third World nations of the 1990s?
Because we were discussing the U.S.'s attempt’s at imperialism/expansion during the first 1/3 of the 20th century, not peacekeeping missions of a superpower in the latter decade of the 20th century.
vern humphrey:
Who’s better at it?
The British.

The British.
As I thought! I didn’t know enough particulars to give that answer, though.

Don’t get me wrong, we’re good at it as well; but when we rebuit Germany and Japan, we had a LOT of help from the British.

Which nations did we take over and keep in the first 1/3 of the 20th Century?

[Sarcasm]Oh, yes – the nations of Africa, the Middle East and the Far East that the British ruled are models of democracy. [/Sarcasm]

You obviously clearly disapprove of** this** nation and its conduct. It seems to me you should seek to find a better one. Particularly since while you complain about this country, you are unable to offer alternate courses of action.

Note that he did not single out a specific nation – he meant ALL nations. This nation has done better that almost any other.

Help me out here – just where was the British Sector in Japan?

Since when do citizens **not **have a right to disapprove of what their country does and how it acts? This is still a country where a citizen can call a spade a spade without fear of Nacht und Nebel retribution.

Better review your High School Citizenship textbook to see what the rights of a citizen are.

IAnd, if you really think that this is the Goldene Medina, you ought to read some history.
This nation has done better that almost any other.
You have a right to believe that and I’ll not ever deny you the right to believe so.

Ah, the old “If you disagree with me, youi’re infringing on my freedom of speech” ploy.
Arba Sicula:

Except when I actually SPEAK about my beliefs, of course – then you claim I’m somehow infringing on your rights.

The British did not participate in the physical Occupation. The Soviet Union occupied the Kurile Islands and the United States the rest of the country. The Soviets, however, never gave up what they seized. (The Japanese periodically try to get Russia to give up control of the islands, which both countries claim).

It is difficult to believe that the United States carried out its occupation in a vacuum without relying to some extent on British knowledge or advice.

You’re the one saying that if I don’t agree that the U.S. is such a wonderfully moral country, I should leave. It appears that you are the one who isn’t ready to allow others freedom of speech with that “love it or leave it” suggestion.

I said, “You have a right to believe that and I’ll not ever deny you the right to believe so.” And you can say what you want, even that bit about wanting people to leave the country.

Ah, the old “If you disagree with me, youi’re infringing on my freedom of speech” ploy, Phase II…

So nice of you to recognize that I have some rights, too.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon12.gif

Ah, the old, "I put my foot in it and can’t extract myself with any grace, so I’ll accuse the other guy of the ‘infringing on my freedom of speech’ " ploy.

Well, I didn’t want to phrase it that baldly, but yeah, that’s what you’ve been doing.

vern humphrey:

Economic imperialism backed up by the United States military.

Last time I checked, India was a very stable country and the entire continent of Africa wasn’t held by the British. With regards to the middle east, the British admitted it was a mistake.
