The two years in prison is for filming men (who sexually exploited young girls) outside a courthouse.
Tommy Robinson is facing a prison sentence after being found in
contempt of court for “aggressively confronting and filming” defendants outside a criminal trial.
Two High Court judges ruled he had breached reporting restrictions by livestreaming footage of men accused of sexually exploiting young girls at Leeds Crown Court in May last year.
Tommy was found in contempt of court because there were a number of linked trials taking place in the case of girls who had been sexually exploited and abused.
There were restrictions on the media outside the court during the trials, because trials for some of the group were taking place whilst juries were deliberating on the verdict for the others accused.
As you know, a jury needs to be as impartial as possible and should only be influenced by the evidence presented in court. The reporting restrictions were put in place to try to preserve impartiality as much as possible since several trials were going on at the same time regarding the same gang.
If the jury can not be impartial, the defendants will walk free whilst the case is abandoned and then the whole process needs to start again. But Tommy didn’t actually care about getting justice through due process, he cared more about getting views on social media.
It is a joke to claim he was so concerned with making sure the men got punishment, and yet he was deliberately putting the whole trial at risk for the sake of his ego.
As it was reported:
‘’During the 2018 case at Leeds Crown Court, reporting restrictions had been put in place postponing the publication of any details until the end of a series of linked trials involving 29 defendants.
However, Robinson, 36, from Luton, broadcast footage from outside the court on 25 May 2018, while the jury in the second trial of the series was considering its verdict.
The video lasted an hour-and-a-half and was viewed online 250,000 times, after being live-streamed on Facebook.‘’
