And I’m sure that if the Ukrainians weren’t sure about NATO membership before this, they can see its benefits now! (since when you attack militarily one member of NATO, all members are required to move to your defense).
Doesn’t quite work like that with America though.

I seem to remember when Argentina invaded the Falklands our so called friends and allies were on the side of the Junta.

Don’t forget Ukraine currently has an illegal government in charge, we have to wait until the May elections.

Yes, I was hounded for years on this website for my implacable opposition to Putin. It reached a fever pitch during the Syria crisis in 2011-2012. Thankfully some people are seeing the light now. I won’t say, “I told ya so”

For the umpteenth time, there are NOT an illegal government.

America doesn’t have a leg to stand on in that argument. Think Panama, Kosovo, Iraq, etc.
…and America needs to stay out of it. Not our problem. We are not the world’s policemen. We have our problems right here in this country. If Europe is so concerned, let them handle it.

“There’s no democracy in Europe,” he told the Observer. “I’ve been to Germany. They give porno lessons in schools. It’s homosexual fascism. They impose their values on others.” theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/22/ukraine-crisis-donetsk-soviet-faithful-young-radicals-moscow
Why do you think that the Americans put Yelena Mizulina on their sanctions list except that she is pro-life and has worked hard in Russia to limit a woman’s right to abortions? Further, she is the lead author of a bill to protect children from material which promotes the use of illegal drugs or which contain homosexual pornography.
Did she have anything to do with Ukraine or with Crimea? I don’t see it.

The naming of Yelena Mizulina as one of the people that the US will have sanctions against speaks volumes about the direction this country has taken under Barack Obama.

Some conservatives, yes indeed. His pose as the “protector of Christianity” won some hearts, even on CAF.

I think for many, Putin’s pretense likely gave some feeling of relief; that there was SOMEONE who expressed some protective words toward Christianity in a world in which the elites do nothing but denigrate and oppress it. Wishful thinking, but it’s hard to blame anyone for it.
If both of you seriously believe that Putin is seen favourably compared to other world leaders just by some Catholics on CAF, then you are mistaken big time.

Just see the comments on this YouTube video of the speech he gave to the German Bundestag in 2001 which has recently resurfaced. He started speaking in Russian but the rest of the speech was in German. Transcript. He spoke of Russia’s role in the reunification of Germany, Russia’s support for the EU integration, disarmament treaties etc. He raised concerns about terrorism (in Russia, the US – September 11 --, and worldwide). Spoke of the need to work together in this area but equally stressed that “when talking about security, we need to be very clear about who we want to protect ourselves from…” He raised concerns about the expansion of NATO (a breach of the promise made to Russia), Russia being left in the dark when decisions are made at the International level. He criticised the too much talk about partnership but with lack of trust. He addressed the Cold War ideologies he believed still existed (in 2001) and declared: “The Cold War is over!” (Applause). He talked of the misinformation nations had about Russia…

Just go through the most liked comments on YouTube. Oh, maybe it’s because he mentioned and praised Princess Elizabeth (St. Elizabeth Romanova) in his speech in an effort to please Christians. 😉 I am certainly pleased. :yup:

PS: Just learning about this great saint from Putin today. For those who are interested about her, she isn’t a Catholic saint, but she is someone you could definitely learn about: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Elisabeth_of_Hesse_and_by_Rhine_(1864%E2%80%931918)

Yup. And his soldiers are in Crimea and are in the process of driving out Ukrainian armed forces, ethnic Ukrainians and Tatars; all after having twice pledged to respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and Crimea within Ukraine.

Actions speak louder than words.

Perhaps, contrary to what the German government believes, some Germans believe Russia is their friend rather than their enemy. Perhaps they do. Let’s see. When are the Russians proposing to give back Koenigsberg and East Prussia?

She has confirmed the phone call in her Twitter but says some parts were edited: twitter.com/YuliaTymoshenko/status/448100004407029761
Translation of the tweet: “The conversation was, but about the 8 million Russians in Ukraine it was edited. In fact I said that the [ethnic] Russians in Ukraine are Ukrainians. Hi FSB [Russian intelligence police] 🙂 Sorry for the expletives.”

Here’s an article about the taped conversation:
telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/ukraine/10721638/Tymoshenko-condemns-Russian-leaks.html

Interesting side note on Tymoshenko – she’s actually a native speaker of Russian (born and raised in Dnipropetrovsk, in eastern Ukraine) and learned Ukrainian as an adult, thus the taped conversation is in Russian. Her ethnic heritage is mixed like many other people’s in that part of the world – Russian, Ukrainian, Jewish, Latvian, and Armenian.

Right. The old president was impeached, and the prime minister lost a vote of no-confidence. Nothing that doesn’t happen in a bog-standard democracy. It’s no more illegal than what would have happened if the Senate removed President Clinton in the 90s.

It looks to me like it was illegal because the Ukrainian constitution stipulates that removal of the president requires at least three fourths of parliament’s constitutional membership. Article 76 of the constitution says that the constitutional membership comprises 450 people’s deputies, so you need 338 votes to remove a president, but there were only 328 votes in favor of the removal.

There were exactly 328 deputies present for the vote (where the other deputies were, who knows), and EVERY single one of them voted to oust the president (328-0), so that means 73% of parliament which was present for the vote were in 100% agreement. Are we really going to quibble over 2%? And remember that Yanukovych fled the country creating a power vacuum, so the government really had no choice, and as such was not acting illegally when they replaced him.

This is a legitimate government.
