Most the responses don’t apply, because, as a Catholic, I believe in the God given teaching authority and mandate of the Church, and that the Holy Spirit protects it from error in order to preserve the integrity of the Gospel. No such thing exists with the myths and lie that surround Abraham Lincoln. The academic cult that protects Lincolns image is no more authoritative to me than the Baseball Hall of Fame. So, as a Catholic, I can rely of the definitive, canonical, and catechismal teachings of the Church to back up my apologia of the veneration of saints. I can refer to the canonization process for each saint, what miracles have been attributed to him or her. Nothing of the sort can be said of Lincoln. Much of his supposed history is pure myth created by Northern abolitionists after the war to preserve the status of emancipation. Additionally, when dealing with a Protestant, I can refer to things taht they will relate to, namely the authority of Scripture to back up my claims. This gives us common footing from which to operate (since most of them will not recognize the authority of the Church). It would be interesting to see your answer to a Protestant’s criticism and if any of it might apply to those who ‘appear’ to be worshiping Lincoln in your perception.
