This morning the Vatican announced the following changes in the US hierarchy:

Adam Joseph Cardinal Maida retired and Archbishop-designate Allen Henry Vigneron was named Archbishop of Detroit, Michigan, USA.

Archbishop-designate Vigneron had been serving as Bishop of Oakland, California.

Bishop John Jeremiah McRaith resigned as Bishop of Owensboro, Kentucky, USA. No replacement was named at this time.

Bishop-elect Cirilo Flores was named Auxiliary Bishop of Orange in California.

The appointment of Vigneron is very interesting for a few reasons.

He was rector, I believe, of Detroit’s seminary and seen as something of a clean up the act to get things in more right order kind of guy.

His return there was speculated but it could in some ways have been perceived as uncertain that such would be wise.

He is a priest of this very diocese. Which is, perhaps, how things really should be. But far from the norm. One wonders whether his appointment signals a change whereby more bishops may eventually come from their home diocese in the future.

This is awesome… really awesome…, news for Detroit.

Now we have Carlson and Boyea and Vigneron… what a “holy trinity” and how much better they ALL are than their former bishops.

Liberals look out. It may take some years, but the strength of faith, and the visibility of the faith will now return to our poor state. We may have a bleak economic outlook… but the future is light and bright in the Church.

.

finally some good news about Detroit, they really need it to counteract all the bad (and I am not just talking about the Lions).

Of course, Vigneron will be missed in California.
Absolutely. He was given a very difficult “first” assignment in Oakland. … perhaps even worse than Detroit.

I hope he is as able to clean house here as he did at the Seminary, where the teachers and seminarians must be in overload for joy.

That is correct. He was placed as rector by then Cardinal Szoka and did a fantastic job of ‘cleaning up’ the seminary.

He went the Seminary High School (back when we had one), but did his priestly studies in Rome at the Gregorian, so he had direct experience in how a really good seminary was run.

This news has really made my day 🙂

Anybody from California out there, specifically Oakland to comment on what the general perception was of Vigneron?

If he was well liked? Respected? Made tons of changes right away?

Detroit is a fine Diocese, I think, and should prosper from a man that is said to be very focused.

Lets hope he does something with the Left Coast of the Arch-Diocese (i.e. the western Suburbs 😛 ) and maybe give the Order of Canon Regulars of the Holy Cross (ORC) a parish over on that side of the Arch-Diocese.

As for the Lions, 0-32 is next 😃

I pray for him - he has a tough crowd of VERY VERY liberal priests and others in Detroit. I hope he can clean house for us, it is so very desperately needed.

May God bless our new Bishop with wisdom, faith, and holiness.

The good bishop has the answer. He will feed the lions to the Christians !

His name…
vigne·ron (vēn′yə rōn**′**)
noun
winegrower

perhaps we can celebrate a new wine

As for Oakland, I understand that they really like him… perhaps because he was unable to stop that “wonderful” cathedral out there.

Among his first actions, I would hope he finds at least 5 Auxilary Bishops to help out. Only Fiores is there now.

If he looks at Gumbleton and goes 180 degrees, Detroit should rejoice.

I doubt he’s getting 5 auxiliaries anytime soon…for starters, that’s too many auxilaries for Detroit…Chicago only has 5 right now…and our last ordination was something like 3 years ago.

It’s always good when a local priest comes to lead a diocese.

I, of course, find MrS laughable in his assessment that all these new bishops are better than their predecessors. It’s not a game of comparisons, each episcopal reign is different than the previous…different than the next…

There is also Bishop Reiss as an ‘active’ auxilliary in Detroit, but he has been struggling with cancer, so he is not as active as he once was (pray for him).

He was able to make a few changes to the design that was created under Bishop Cummins, like moving the tabernacle back to a focal position.

What do you mean last ordination? If you mean Priestly you are wrong! Detroit had 5 last year, 5 this year and 6-8 the year after.

Sorry…I meant epsicopal…Chicago got its last auxliary appointment in late 2005…I’m just saying that I’d be surprised if Detroit landed a copious number of new auxilaries…maybe 2-3 at best.

Owensboro still waits. There was an article last Saturday in the paper where the Owensboro diocese is trying to get priests from South America and Africa to make up for the shortage here.
