I grew up in Detroit, and I’m very pleased to see the news about Archbishop Virgneron. When I’ve visited family and attended their parish I have been appalled by the liturgical abuse. On one occasion I had to write to Cardinal Maida. It was summer, there was no Gloria, no Creed, no Agnus Dei. Some small changes have taken place but not all. The concecrated host is still a large round brown loaf.

God Bless Archbishop Virgneron may his orthodoxy become a bright shining light to many of the priests and pastors of Detroit.

Any news yet on if this is going to be a public Mass? I know that is the assumption, but would like to be sure before taking the day off work.

Hey, Liza… I was just looking at a news article from Tuesdays Freep, and it didn’t mention the time or location for the Mass…

I would guess that it’s closed. 😦

Hmmm… any one know any one that knows any one that could get us in?

Their loss, our gain? 😃
Thanks for the charity.

Bishop Vigneron will sorely be missed by many in the Oakland diocese. The real tragedy in all this, at least here in Oakland, is that there has been no announcement as to who his replacement will be.

So perhaps prayers for our new bishop would be better than off-hand comments like the one above.

I don’t think the comment was meant to be uncharitable. Afterall, those of us who know about your bishop would agree that the change is a loss for you… and certainly a gain for Detroit.

I hope there are many prayers for the replacement, and that he be as Catholic as Bishop Vigneron for the sake of Oakland and for the sake of the Church.

I agree, it was not meant to be uncharitable, but it was insensitive to those who know they’re losing a very good and holy bishop.

I know many in the Detroit diocese are excited, and they should be. Yet theirs is not the only diocese in the country in need of a good bishop. We should be praying for all the diocese that are in need of shepherds like Vigneron. I see a red hat in his future, so even Detroit may only have him for a short time.

I agree on the red hat. However, it would not be unusual for that to be given by B16 in a few years to Bishop Vigneron, and he would stay right in Detroit. Afterall, he is replacing a Cardinal.

Unless he is someday pulled to Rome, I anticipate him being here for the 15 years till his “retirement”… hopefully in good physical health, and even more hopefully in continued strong Catholic leadership.

Prayers to you and Oakland for a strong replacement.

And thanks for “protecting” him until his return.👍

So very true.

Thanks to sites like CAF, I’m aware that many of the concerns and questions that I have are far from unique, and some of my concerns and questions are NOTHING compared to what others are dealing with.

The church is universal. If one of us is not whole, none of us are whole! 😊

Not a problem. I am hoping to see him again this year at the Walk for Life WC is San Fran. I got to walk with him for a few minutes the past two years. simply an amazing man.

I can certainly empathize with your pain. I had the same reservations when Bp. Vigneron was assigned to Oakland. I felt the same loss when we lost Bps. Blair, Quinn & Boyea to other diocese.

Our Holy Father is not blind to the needs of the USA. He will send you a shepherd who will continue to tend your flock with the same love and care as Bp. Vigneron.

The good bishop has the answer. He will feed the lions to the Christians !

perhaps we can celebrate a new wine

As for Oakland, I understand that they really like him… perhaps because he was unable to stop that “wonderful” cathedral out there.

I had managed to forget about that Cathedral (thank you for bringing that back into my memory :(). It looks like a nuclear reactor on the outside and a pageant runway inside a nuclear reactor on the inside. What a waste.
Sorry to derail…carry on with the thread! Just had to get that out. 😃

It might take longer than a few years, depending on where Cardinal Maida retires to.

It has been the practice of the Church that the new archbishop is not named a Cardinal while the archbishop-emeritus remains alive and in the diocese.

There is also a small doubt that Detroit will retain a Cardinalate. The population is decreasing, and Pope Benedict has expressed an interest in making the College more international. This was mostly taken to mean fewer Italian Cardinals, but you never know.

His name…

winegrower

Among his first actions, I would hope he finds at least 5 Auxilary Bishops to help out. Only Fiores is there now.

If he looks at Gumbleton and goes 180 degrees, Detroit should rejoice.

.
If you’re implying the modernists love him, then you’re wrong about that. Those who are happy to see him go are the liberals in the diocese. The orthodox Catholics are happy for him in his promotion, but are sad to see him go. This is based on the reactions I have personally witnessed.

As for the cathedral. Have you been inside it? I gather, since you reside in MI., your opinion is based on pictures only. I wasn’t sure I would like it based on the pics, but when we went to Mass there, I actually like it. Sure it’s a bit more modern, but a church is made Holy by what resides there, not in how it is built.

Incidentally, where is it reported that he tried to stop it from being built? It was my understanding that he was instrumental in getting it built.

Modernism is a heresy looking to take a bigger foothold in the Catholic Church. I think modernists are much happier without him

Sorry, but a “church in the round” is simply an expression of the agenda to emphasize 'more of me, less of HIM". The first time it failed was when Moses came down from the mountain the first time.

Incidentally, where is it reported that he tried to stop it from being built? Actually, I think I said he could not stop it from being built. I imagine he was “sensitive” to others in his comments about the finished project - which I understand he did manage to improve on. It was my understanding that he was instrumental in getting it built. He was instrumental in finding the necessary funds to complete the project that was not his to begin with.

Like I said, you have not been there and are basing your opinion on pictures. Let me clear something up for you, the Cathedral of Light is NOT a “church in the round”.

Well, considering his predecessor did not want to build a cathedral, I think he had more to do with it than you think. Prior to his arrival, there was never any talk of building a new cathedral after the original was condemned after the '89 quake. Bishop Cummins thought the funds would be better used to help the poor and homeless of the diocese.

Insensitive?

Um…if he’s such a good bishop, which I fully believe, it’s a statement of fact. We will benefit here in Detroit. You will miss him there. I’m not saying “Nyah, nyah, nyah, we’ve got him now and you don’t” .

My comment was meant neither to be uncharitable nor insensitive, sorry if you took it that way.

It just seemed so, especially with the smiley added.

No biggy. Apology accepted.

God Bless!!

I’d actually bet the doublewide that Detroit will not see another cardinal archbishop for a very long time. I could be wrong, but the signs seem to point away from that happening.

Ultimately, I fail to see how it matters.

The smiley was added precisely to indicate a lighthearted comment. 🤷 Que, Sera, sera.

Hey, who knows…you might end up with a fantastic bishop, and I pray that is so. :gopray2:
