As someone who has grown up between Northern Ireland and Scotland I can say that what the President said is in principle not a bad idea. Yes I am a Protestant however I am marrying a Catholic man and should we be blessed with children they too will be raised Catholic. However I have made a point of agreeing with my fiancée already that they will never attend a soley Catholic or Protestant school. This is nothing against religion or anything like that. It is a social issue. Growing up in Northern Ireland was a very very difficult thing to do. When I used to attend sports clubs etc we were all segregated according to which school we attended and it led to a lot of bullying and prejudice on both sides! Once I moved back to Scotland (where I’m originally from) attended a Christian school. I forget the exact order but it went something like this: Monday mornings we went to Mass, Tuesday we attended The Kirk (Church of Scotland), Wednesday was Episcopalian etc etc. This has not done me any harm. I have never discriminated against someone based on their religion nor would i ever want to do so. My cousins were raised Catholic and attended this same school. They are all devout Catholics raising their own children the same way. In relation to Northern Ireland please consider it from the point of view of a child- imagine being told that you could not play with another child because they went to the wrong type of school? It was not a nice experience!

I thought the notion of freedom of religion was supposed to be that different religious communities and institutions could could coexist within the same state and exercise their rights without interfering with the others? Why is it then that the president calls for the abolition of religious institutions as the only way to civil peace? It’s like advocating ending racism by everyone painting themselves the same color.

In Belfast maybe, where I come from not so, I had/have many protestant friends, one thought God Bless Him, I miss him, but he thought we had IRA meetings at Mass, such ignorance.

With no more elections to win, I can’t wait for Obama to come out in opposition to Catholic schools in the U.S. also.
Well, if he gets his way with that evil HHS Mandate then many Catholic schools are going to end up closing if they refuse to comply with the HHS Mandate. I hope they do refuse to comply. I don’t want to see any Catholic schools close but I also don’t want to see any Catholic schools violate Catholic moral values.

They won’t close. They are too used to feeding at the “Tax-exempt, get money per student head count from the government” trough.

I’m amazed that a thread relative to this is still going when even Bill Donohoe has denounced the idea that President Obama was attacking Catholic or religious schools with what he said.

The last time I checked Mr. Donhoe is no liberal or shrinking violet.

Successive American presidents have used their influence in Northern Ireland to assist the peace process. That assistance has been welcomed by governments in Dublin, Belfast and London. To acknowledge that is evidence of a colonial outlook? What a very weird assertion.
