“Stick it”? Stick what? I simply noted that if people are horrified that lesbians exist and don’t resign themselves to living under rocks, they’re probably even more horrified to learn that she grew up Catholic and attended Catholic schools. Frankly if this fact gets under people’s skins (as I assume it will), that’s their problem and not mine.
Nope. But I know from personal experience that one can understand the Church’s teachings on homosexuality and still reject them. I also know from personal experience that many (gay or straight) who do so also understand the CCC and still reject it. It’s only here that I run into folks who assume those who disagree just don’t understand.
It should get under people’s skin though. If they’re properly catechized as you suggest on said teachings, and yet they still reject them, all the more reason to pity them. They’re rejecting more than the RCC…they’re rejecting Christ…no? Their soul is in danger…is it not? It’s one thing to not be properly informed about what the church teaches and to continue on with your reckless lifestyle. But it’s quite another thing to be properly catechized, knowing precisely what the Church has taught for 2000 yrs. to be infallibly true, and with full knowledge of this basically say to Christ and his Church; “No…I will not obey!” I certainly wouldn’t be so blasé about it as it would appear from your following remark;
For those with “problems” with Wambach, get ready to have your feathers even further ruffled: she attended an all-girls Catholic high school. The horror!
Peace, Mark

Indeed.

For there is no other way to know Christ and what He said, except through the CC’s preservation of His Words for you and me.

If the CC got it wrong about homosexuality being objectively disordered, then how do you know that the CC got it right about God forgiving our sins, or Christ rising from the dead, or walking on water, or establishing 7 sacraments?

Is it only the things that we find agreeable and to our liking that we say, “Yes, God certainly said that!”

But when it’s something we personally feel uncomfortable with, “I don’t like that divorce and re-marriage is adultery!”, that we say, “The Church gets it wrong here!”

???

No reason to be ruffled. Anyone familiar with the so called ‘spirit’ of Vatican II will find many examples of those within the Church going against the teachings of Jesus.

Precisely. Excellent point! Everything falls apart! If any of her infallible teachings are false, then that makes us no different than the other 34,000 Christian denominations out there. The “One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church that Christ founded” pronouncement would be a shaky claim at best.

Peace, Mark

The school Wambach attended is near me and it’s an excellent Catholic high school. The fact that another poster has already assumed that Wambach is a married lesbian because the school she attended failed to properly catechize her says quite a bit about 1) the ignorance here regarding homosexuality, and 2) the poor assumptions here about the reasons one might understand but reject the CCC’s teachings on homosexuality.
Let’s just stop the absurd assumptions here: neither gracepoole nor I knows how well catechized Abby Wambach is regarding the Church’s teachings in general and on homosexuality specifically.

I will simply offer this which demonstrates the abysmal state of catechesis for American Catholics:

pewforum.org/2010/09/28/u-s-religious-knowledge-survey/

Summary: Catholics have a dismal knowledge of Catholicism.

So it seems that it’s a very, very reasonable and astute observation that Abby Wambach, if she was even baptized and confirmed Catholic, could not articulate correctly any apologia at all for the Church’s teaching on homosexuality.

What does V2 have to do with anything in this context?

Not Vatican II itself but what happened after when many misinterpreted or ignored the documents of Vatican II to suit their notions. Also the rejection of Humanae Vitae by many liberals in and outside the Church. We shouldn’t be surprised when we hear of someone with a Catholic background rejecting a teaching of Jesus in the guise of rejecting Church teaching.

Not Vatican II itself but what happened after when many interpreted the documents of Vatican to suit their notions. It speaks to the confusion in catechesis.
The failure of our Church to provide nourishing catechesis to her flock may or may not be a fruit of V2.

It’s amazing how you ignore the hatred in your own heart while clearly seeing it in others.

And the fact that many liberals infiltrated the Catholic Church as priests, nuns, DRE’s, theology teachers, school principals, etc. ensuring the truth of the faith would not be passed on to thousands of unsuspecting Catholics.

Of course, the Truth has always remained and will always be passed on, even if it is in the minority.

pete 29,
I am very surprised by these comments of yours about a fellow forum member, gracepoole.

After reading all of the posts on this thread, there is nothing remotely similar to ‘hatred’ in any of the posts by our fellow member.

Surely this forum is a place where we can have robust and healthy discussion without attributing bad intentions to those we disagree with?

And yet here you are attributing bad intentions to a fellow forum member. :hmmm:

The negative comments regarding Abby Wambach are disappointing. The US team won the World Cup, and Wambach wanted to celebrate by embracing the person who means the most to her in the world. I cannot comprehend the mindset of those who find fault with this spontaneous expression of happiness.
I don’t think anyone is really objecting to a spontaneous expression of happiness, Mulligan.

What is being objected to is the larger narrative: same sex unions are just another choice.

We all hold certain sexual relationships to be taboo, you included. Perhaps yours is polyamorous relationships. If not…if you’re perfectly ok with throuples and such, perhaps another example would be what’s espoused by NAMBLA.

Whatever the case, imagine a sexual relationship which you object to, being celebrated and endorsed on the big screen, and by society, and when you object, being told, “I cannot comprehend the mindset of those who find fault with this expression of happiness”.

Then you can understand the objection.

No, the forum member did that in his own words. I was expressing my surprise/shock at reading them.
He putatively did that to a forum member.

You are doing that to him.

Why do you permit for yourself what you object to in others?

I think that shows the abysmal catechesis that goes on in Catholic education.
Yes she did…Our Lady of Mercy High School in Rochester, NY. Their former bishop of Rochester had a lot to be desired. I guess that’s why Rochester is known as the San Francisco of the East Coast.

There is only one logical way to understand what you posted and that is you wanted to stick it to those Catholics that disagree with you.
Catholics who agree with SSM are cafeteria Catholics. It’s fine if Abby is lesbian so long as she leads a chaste life. And don’t think there wasn’t tension on this team because of some of the overt lesbianism displayed. Plus they had a criminal as a goal tender. 🤷
