Yeah. We both watch “Grimm.” The last episode we both looked at each other and at the same time commented on how just a few years ago that level of violence would have been only on primetime on a premium channel such as HBO or Showtime!
Usually with these things, the amount of advertisements for a show is inversely proportional to it’s likelihood to stay on the air.
Exactly…the market at work. Same thing happened last year with the show about the Playboy empire and the one about Pan Am. I was disturbed by the ads for this show and Grimm, too, especially considering the Olympics is supposed to be an all ages thing. This is why we never watch anything live anymore. We can skip past these types of commercials.
I would be concerned about this show except for the fact that it’s probably going to get pulled after 2 episodes due to low ratings.
So the local television station shouldn’t determine the programming it shows? Those decisions should be decided by the national network? Doesn’t that contradict the principle of subsidiarity?
Since the program will be televised in the same broadcast area by another station, how is this censorship?
Exactly. I don’t see why any local affiliate owner should be coerced to go along with whatever the national office wants to send down the pike. If people don’t like the decision, they’ll certainly face the consequences. It’s hard to think of such a move as “censorship”, though, when the general public has unprecedneted access to such programs in many different ways.
Who said anything about absolving anyone of responsibility? If anything, my point is that we need to be MORE responsible for ourselves and what we allow into our homes and not cede that authority to others. Turning it off or changing the channel IS being responsible for ourselves as adults, and not expecting Mommy Government or Daddy Network to choose for us or protect us against something that we should know for ourselves that is sinful.
Nope. The media needs to have its feet held to the fire. PERIOD. No MORE EXCUSES. They are the problem. NOT US. I am not going to let them get away with more TV shows like Dexter, or putting on soft porn.
And you’ve done it. You have taken the responsibility yourself by choosing what comes into your home. You’ve made your opinion known to the media. Why do you assume that only you should have freedom of choice and that you are the sole arbiter of what everyone else in the world should do? I gave up my cable too, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to say that everyone must do what I did. When friends or coworkers ask if I watched this or that, I can simply say “I don’t have cable anymore, what was coming into my house didn’t match my values anymore”. That’s all. I’m finding that people feel comfortable talking to me further because I’m pretty low key about it.

There are laws on the books - that’s what I’m pointing out. People put them there. We choose to contact the FCC or we choose not to.

In case you missed it, there is only one direction the media and society in general has been heading in the last 40 years - down. No, you decide to complain to the government for a redress of grievances, remember? If nobody contacts the FCC would that make you happy?
