Utah NBC Affiliate Won’t Air New Gay Couple Comedy ‘The New Normal’

In case you missed it, there is only one direction the media and society in general has been heading in the last 40 years - down. No, you decide to complain to the government for a redress of grievances, remember? If nobody contacts the FCC would that make you happy?

The only place? How about those Christians protesting against a strip club in Detroit? And what about attempts by religious leaders in Detroit to get strippers to observe a few more rules? And what about meetings between the Pope and government leaders in various countries? What about this?

Did you read the “confuse and destroy” part? As Catholics, we need to go to the Federal government and complain. This isn’t about “free markets” anymore.

And complaining to the FCC has done exactly what for you that turning off your own TV didn’t? Writing to the networks and advertisers has done exactly what that differs from being responsible for your own choices?

I’d hazard a guess that I’ve had just as much influence if not more just talking to my friends and co-workers about my choice to kick the cable box out and choose entertainment that mirrors my values. I’ve convinced at least two people to join me in just the last 2 weeks, who knows if there are more that haven’t said anything yet. Sure,it doesn’t sound like much, but that’s how change begins.

I think one of the things that bothers me the most about this upcoming show is the way they’re marketing it. If they were marketing it as some adult, “edgy”, irreverent, “pushing-the-envelope” comedy, that would be one thing. But they seem to be marketing it as a wholesome family comedy.

The fact that the show is on NBC eases my mind, though. They’re not exactly known for producing hits these days. I can’t seeing the show lasting that long.

From the reviews I have read, I am not sure the show actually is edgy or “pushing the envelope,” except that it concerns a gay couple who have a baby via a surrogate.

Sure, that scenario is a bit out there. But the characters are reportedly stereotypical and the dialogue tends to be sweet, even sappy. Other than the central premise, this show sounds like the same pap that the TV networks often serve up. I think persons who tune into the program, after hearing all the hullabaloo from the AFA and about the Utah situation, will be disappointed.

Perhaps the real standout is the Archie Bunker-like character played by Ellen Barkin. Given her recent tweets, I don’t suppose she had much trouble getting into that role.
But heck… Archie Bunker was edgy 40 years ago. A female rendition of him at this point is still passé.

I’m not much of a video or TV watcher, but if anyone is interested in watching the pilot of the show, NBC has put it online.

I would be surprised if the show makes it to a second season. It might not even make it to Halloween. I think ratings will tank after the first week. But I am basing this on reviews of the pilot and haven’t watched it myself.

With all compassion and love for my gay brothers and sisters. I agree, that this show is not the new ‘Normal.’ I would not teach my children or grandchildren that it is normal for 2 men or 2 women to be together as man an wife. The agenda might be to expose this to the culture in an effort for people to become so use to seeing it, that we just start to believe and accept, that it is normal. I received an email asking me to sign a petition demanding that this show should be aired. Instead, I wrote a response explaining why I agree that it should not be aired.

I give it until January at the most. At least its going to be on at 9:30 on Tuesdays, and not in the 8pm hour.

I don’t know how American television networks work, and what the process is on how shows get from paper to Pilot and then greenlighted, but in Australia, a comedy like this with this premise would not see the light of day, unless it’s on Foxtel where they are not afraid to air such shows. I’m being careful to not use poor choice of words. I guess you can see we’re still have a fairly conservative in the Networks here in Australia (Seven,Nine TEN, ABC- I won’t include SBS because they seem to air most filth).

Personally I think it’s great the local station took a stand at not airing this. I don’t think this is the normal. It’s not a show I would expose my kids or anyone in my family too. I think it’s to subjective and it creates the sense that for kids to go out and think “okay well I’m going to be gay and have kids” because tv said it’s okay and it’s the new normal. Again I am trying to be careful with my choice of words here. But the media has a major influence on kids and the public and it’s kind of scary that such shows like this are going into homes.

A sweet sappy comedy about two gay guys doing a rent-a-womb…well, sweet and sappy except for evil Rent-a-Womb’s mom, who is the Wicked Witch of Yesterday’s Prejudices because she thinks the whole mess the work of the devil.

This is the new normal. Oy, vey. You are right, though. The only way this show could be edgy is if the gays were portrayed in a way that frowns on their surrogacy scheme, and Rent-a-Womb’s mom were portrayed as the only sane person in the whole group. That would be edgy. That would be controversial. Tell me that all the people calling Utah the land of bigots wouldn’t be boycotting the network like there was no tomorrow. That, however, is not going to happen. There will be no comedies implying that this kind of arrangement isn’t nature’s ideal, only comedies implying that people who don’t like it are unlikeable buffoons straight out of the torture basement of the Spanish Inquisition.

Let us hope it dies a fast ratings death. The premise is one-dimensional and not funny, so we can hope.

I don’t know why, but it strikes me as so sad that the person who wrote that (quote from the article in the original post) can’t see the difference between a show that is all about stopping the persons who would commit rape, child murder, etc. and a show that would consider those deviant behaviors (rape and child murder, to quote specifically) ok.
