I know this sounds harsh, but the people of Venezuela unwittingly voted for this. They got what they wanted.

The lesson for us is be very careful when the government promises free things. They end up costing.

Reminds me of the Israelites when they asked for a king.

Nothing harsh about it. The people support the revolution, and if foreign meddling continues the workers councils will respond in kind.

When legitimate, respecting the warranties in place for elections to be free, transparent and fair, your principle may apply…
In Venezuela’s case this is also disputed as illegitimate presidency… As claims of violation of human rights in situ and by international fora.

You want to hear something frightening? Many here in the USA want this same brand of socialism! Just look at the popularity of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez! What a wacked out country we’ve become!

No John…
This wasn t a case of choosing free stuff whatever so you got what you chose this time he was re-elected(I was answering to sb else’ s post).

In the best of cases , those who did not hear what opposition had to say now are watching their own rights destroyed.
That was their choice not to hear.
That doesn t leave the opposition making a tantrum because they do not agree, but by denouncing fraud, corruption, imprisonment of those who oppose and the list goes on and on. Until denouncing the illegitimacy of President through illegitimate elections through failure to the warranties by national and international standards.
It is offensive to throw out there they have got they asked for,it leave a half the people at least muted, chastised forever and it doesn t apply here this time.
One has swallowed a lot of that already…

They voted for the new constitution and for Chavez. Maduro is following in Chavez’s footsteps.

If we start the same policies here as they do in Venezuela, we will become much like them. Taxing and confiscating the property of the wealth creators made them leave the country. No wealth creators->no jobs, no money, no goods and services.

The UN gives refugee figures of:

260,000 Venezuelan refugees in the USA, over 1,100,000 in Colombia, a total of 3-4 million. That’s really what this is about in my opinion. So many have fled. Many more may flee. 5,000 a day are leaving.

There is a good chance, these recent elections have not been proper. I don’t know the details. I do not believe Maduro is a legitimate president.

I’ve heard others say that, “well, they voted for it”. I don’t know the total answer to that.

A side story, an American report “may” have been taken into custody in Venezuela. That’s my caveat, as far as I’m concerned he is in custody.

Do you understand the idea of opposition? Would you please grasp that for years and years until you are not only not heard, but remain and struggle and participate even to imprisonment , until finally you can provide the evidence of fraudulent and corrupted elections, just to be told “ you got what you chose for”?
Yes, that is the kind of support one needs I guess…

You should probably make an effort to learn some of the details before declaring the victor of an election certified by 150 foreign observers in a country with what many (including Jimmy Carter) call the best voting system in the world “illegitimate”.
I’m namely talking about why Maduro is president now, he does not seem to be a legitimate president.

Looks like others have different opinions and that is for the 2012 election. I don’t think Maduro is a legitimate sitting president now.

Agree, but from I’ve read, the majority voted for the Constitution of Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which allows for the emergency powers which are being employed by Maduro and his buddies.

Please correct me if am wrong.

If winning a legitimate presidential election is not enough to be considered legitimate president then frankly who cares?

Anyway, people are eating out of trash cans and 3,000,000, maybe close to 4,000,000 people have fled Venezuela in the past few years. Venezuela has a population of around 33,000,000, this is close to 10% of the population. This would be like 30,000,000 people fleeing the US.

Oliver Stone, Roger Waters, Danny Glover, anyone standing with Maduro is standing for this.

You are talking about the 2012 election, not the 2018 election.
I am talking about the 2018 election:

Thank you, Victoria.
That is what I am trying to say.
And that when given a chance, the opposition will more likely be able to trace corruption backwards as it usually happens… unfortunately, but fortunately that it can be brought to justice.
Something that amidst corruption is impossible because justice as we know it disappears under dictatorships
