Scott thank you. Is there a proper term for someone like my friend, baptized Catholic but neither in agreement with the Magisterium nor practicing? She has a lot of company sadly. Whenever I hear that “50% of Catholics Support Legal Abortion” I imagine someone like her.

What about Biden? How do we refer to a public figure who openly opposes the Church’s position on the non-negotiables? I don’t think he is as blatant or as damaging as Sebelius (whom I understand was asked not to compromise her Priest by partaking in the Eucharist). But he gives a lot of non-practicing Catholics a pass on their own heretical ideas.

They are causers of scandal. Here is what Jesus has to say about people who, by their words or actions, cause others to fall into sin:

Mark 9:24 “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.”

Matthew 18:7 “Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!”

That passage from Mark was the gospel read two Sundays ago. I thought I saw a business opportunity in it. Given the great quantity of scandal and the scarcity of millstones in contemporary society, we should go into the millstone manufacturing business.

I am sure we would be in trouble with the EPA as the ocean filled up with millstones.

I am pretty sure that would be physically impossible. 😃

Good business idea though.

Remember the question was who won? And not who do you prefer, or who do you want to win.

I think Mr Biden won by the slimmest of margins.

And you are the expert of your opinion!

I disagree, and voted that way. I am the expert of my opinion, but I find myself in the company of others who agree.😃

Biden won on theatrics.

Ryan won on substance.

Since I am evaluating a political leader, not an entertainer, I more likely consider Ryan the winner.

I guess he won the contest of who was the loudest or spoke the most. But given that he lied/misspoke/misled repeatedly, that he could only make points by talking over Ryan.

Maybe I don’t know the rules of debate (although it really wasn’t a debate) Is this like boxing where the most punches wins?

BTW that was ONE question. The thread is on the debate in general so the discussion as it often does, wanders a bit.

I have to give Lunchbox Joe this…he has really shiny teeth.

Not sure how that comes into play as a qualification for Vice President…but…there you have it.

And a semi-nice comb-over.
What I thought GREAT was the “pro-life” discussion.

Both are Irish.

Both come from small town USA.

Both are Catholic.

It all came down to who followed the more closely guarded principles of life as taught by the Catholic Church. It is Ryan without even a debate about it.

I worked last night, so I didn’t vote, but I’ve now seen enough clips to wonder how 27 (!) people here have voted for a man who displayed classless, boorish, childish behavior—even laughing while Ryan discussed the Benghazi atrocity in which our ambassador was assassinated. Where are your standards? Just wondering…Rob

Llibs don’t have standards… unless you count always lowering the bar. ( Homos, abortion, euthanasia etc ).

There is Catholic and non-Catholic. That was the post I was responding to.

The designation “Catholic in name” does not exist.
Yes, your right. I used a loose term do designate that he is not practicing catholism as taught.

Standards? He’s been in Washington DC since Nixon was running for President…literally. Nothing can survive Washington DC that long.

Classless behavior is Paul Ryan telling a story about kids paralyzed in a car crash to a man who lost his wife and daughter in one.

Well, I must say, he was aggressive enough, if that were to be the mode of scoring, he would have won handsomely. I do think Mr. Biden did his homework. He had some good points, but he was factually in error many times during the debate.

This debate was so totally a wash for me, because I was truly interested in hearing at least most of what Mr. Ryan had to say…but this was impossible at times with Mr. Biden talking over him, butting in, cutting him off completely, etc. At the end at least Paul Ryan started to actually finish his answer to the moderator regardless of what Joe Biden was doing, and then you couldn’t hear either one of them! Not to blame the moderator, because I do think she was at least trying to be as fair as possible, but she just totally lost control of Joe Biden. Could not seem to reign him in. And then all of this is not to speak of how totally and unabashedly condescending he was to the Congressman. It was really a disappointing debate to me. Realizing that the Party probably sent him in as their attack man, he went WAY over the line. Respectful was the LAST thing he was. For cryin out loud, at least allow your opponent the opportunity to answer!!! Sheesh!!

Catholic/Christian in name only does too exist… .also known as cafeteria Catholics/Christians. So johnnyjones… you are correct.
