I guess what should concern us is that they have an audience at all…these young men at the future husbands, fathers and “responsible” citizens of the future…I’d feel a little better if they were watching something with a message that was uplifting rather than trashing everything and everyone OR at least the kind of humor that shouldn’t embarrass one in mixed company.

I do not watch the show and I cannot believe that anyone would just say “oh well, they do this to everyone”. Well, I think it’s wrong for them to insult mormons or any other faith, but it’s up to those folk to fight for what they believe in. And I have seen a couple episodes, including the mormon one, and it did make me sad. I do not support the mormon beliefs, but I still don’t think it’s okay to make fun of them. But I think this goes way beyond that. the show was not just acting like our beliefs are silly. It was vile and disgusting! I have seen and been around some pretty bad stuff, but this really upsets me. What really upsets me is when we feel that non-catholics don’t show her the honor she deserves, but act like it’s an overreation to be completely offended and want to take some action to something like this.

I disagree. So protesting is not teaching and reaching out? Evidently you and I have a different idea of Gospel. To say we shouldn’t protest is like saying we shouldn’t correct people for their immoral behavior. That’s literally what you said. Better not to react, and keep our emotions bottled up right? Please.
Actually, I think what he was trying to say, and correctly so is that creating a big deal out of this is publicity. Publicity creates interest in others who have not seen it and in turn brings in more viewers. The producers and network would absolutely LOVE a furor over this.

Yes, they have trashed Jessie Jackson more than once.

I know from seeing interviews with the two guys who came up with this show that there is no hate in it at all. They actually think this stuff is funny. They think that stuff that offends most people is funny. I can see why you might think so in light of how much hate is directed at the Church but in this case you are wrong. These guys do not hate the church or anyone else. They just have a twisted sense of humor.
I don’t know if I buy the highly respected thing with Jessie Jackson. He’s not exactly an icon. I guess I just don’t view this the same way as you or the writers of South Park.

I wonder if the people of South Park and fans of the show would be chuckling if I took images of their mothers and put them on national TV with blood spraying out of their vaginas.
:nope:

It does not matter how you or I see Jackson. The black community does respect him and probably does not like seeing him trashed.

Judging by what I have seen of them they would laugh.

Ok, I just watched it. That’s a difficult one to defend. What’s frustrating is that all they needed to do was make the blood on the statue come in the form of tears (you know from the eyes) and there wouldn’t be a problem at all. It’s like they added disgusting stuff and Pope Benedict just to see what kind of reaction they’d get. Very frustrating.

That said, I still think shows like Law & Order: SVU do A LOT more harm to the Church than a show like South Park.
Do you see it this way Jabronie? The big differance here is that with South Park they are making fun the Church. Now in SVU it really seems to be a lot more malice. South Park they don’t really understand what they are doing. SVU they may have a good idea of what they are doing, and are much more calculating, and trying to undermine the Church.

I agree. We used to love SVU but the ever-increasing anti-Catholic message turned us away.

Okay, I don’t mean to keep beating on this, and this is the last thing I will say about it. Jesse Jackson is NOT venerated above all other black leaders. That’s a fact. He is not considered sacred. That’s a fact.

Don’t bet on it! Neither you nor I know anything about these people. All we know is what we see on TV, which is an act to generate more $$$.

Right, as misguided as something like this is, it is just harmless fun in the eyes of the writers. This week’s episode of SVU left me furious; it was a directed and calculated attack on the Church. And it’s not even close to the first time they’ve done that. What happens on a NBC drama, a highly rated on like Law & Order happens for a reason. They deliberately attack the Church in order to give their audience a NEGATIVE oppinion of it. They agenda of this week’s SVU was clearly to attack the Church’s stance on homosexuality, and make the claim that it causes crime because of that stance.

South Park has never done this, in fact as digusting as this episode of South Park was, they did not attack the Church politically, or her beliefs socially. AND the results of the of the blood from the statue were positive. If anything, they did it in a disgusting way just so that they wouldn’t appear to have a favorable opinion of the Church.

Why do I have the feeling I’m going to get flamed on that statement…

You are beating this to death. Which black leader is considered sacred? If you think he is not respected by anyone you are very wrong. I have no respect for him, you have no respect for him, but others do.

I do not know what you know about them but I used to watch this show a lot. I have seen numerous shows about the making of it and about the guys who came up with it and what their motivations are. They do not do any of this stuff because of hate. Judging by what I have seen of them this show came about as their twisted way of making fun of the people who go around worshiping highway underpasses and pieces of toast that they see the Blessed Mother on.

–“Judging by what I have seen of them they would laugh.”–

I really can’t help it if they have no respect for their own mother or feel righteous anger if she were treated in this fashion, but this is our BLESSED MOTHER!

They don’t understand, nor would it be that easily comphrended. Many in this audience doesn’t understand what it means to hold something sacred. If anything take pity on them, atleast you understand Our Mother’s love, they do not.

Did the Southpark producers feel at all deterred by the prospect of Catholic League whining when making the programme or did they relish extra controversy?

The Catholic League is a presure valve for the sort of neocon neocatholics that think they can ‘Vote Out’ abortion if they just get the formula right.

Since we cannot control the filth coming down the pipe … get the sewer out of the living room!

A rercurrent rationale in this thread is that the the show makes fun of all religions, so Catholics should not feel singled out.

But the point should be that the show is offensive (and subversive to our culture) precisely because it wants to undermine all values, and by doing so inculcate the mindset that everyone’s values are meaningless. Except, of course, the values that will be defined for us by the cultural Nazis.

Now you are talking action! We don’t have cable. The only TV in the house resides behind doors and one must make a conscious effort to turn it on.

Do we miss it? Last night my daughter begged that we read just one more chapter from a book we are sharing. Mention South Park to her and you will get a confused look.

I have a better idea, don’t watch the show. That’s how they loose viewers.

In the words of Fr John Corapi:

**“Yea I’ll pray for them. I’ll pray that God comes down and kicks them in the but”. ** In the most charitable way possible, of course.

I’m done with this thread now.

If your watching South Park you can’t really expect to see anything that is fair. South Park takes the mick and insults the majority of religions, Protestant, Catholic, Mormons, Judaism. I am not really suprised by this, and really not that insulted, sure I think its wrong, but they are the ones who look ignorant. I say don’t complain, it just makes us look like kill joys who want to bible bash all the time. I am always finding insulting stuff on South Park, just ignore it.
If they were insulting your mother (the one that gave birth to you) would you still watch? :nope: When you watch they make $$$$$$$, they get more powerful and then insult and defame more people and Religions. If you are not part of the solution then you are part of the problem. You know what is really sad is that I know a Priest that actually watches this trash.

From the moment I saw that show I really, really hated it. I watched a couple of episodes, never laughed once. And now they go after the Blessed Virgin. On the eve of the feast of the Immaculate Conception (coincidence I’m sure).
Code:
I get that the whole idea of the show is shock value, and that they make fun of everyone, but is nothing sacred!? Apparently not.

Around here, everyone watches South Park, and almost religiously exhalt it. Sad sad thing is, even though about 90% of the group is Catholic they won't find a single thing wrong with it.

Really this is a case of darned if we do, darned if we don't. If we make a fuss, it will only encourage them to attack more, and more offensive. If we don't do a thing, no dout it will be supported with thunderous applause by the army of lapsed Catholics, having the same effect as if we had maded a fuss. Choosing not to watch is a good idea, but really I don't think orthoxed christians is a large part of their target audiance, so, in the end nothing happens.

The only thing we can do, is pray for everyone one involved in the show and perhaps the audiance who will probably laugh their behinds off. I may be no judge of souls, but surely insulting the Blessed Virgin is no path to heaven.

Exactly, my friend. Exactly.

We have got to stand up as Catholics and defend ourselves. The old argument of “if you protest you’re giving them the publicity they want” doesn’t fly this time around.

We are not talking about being angry because the show is crude, or immoral, or childish. The writers of this show ATTACKED the mother of our Lord. Period. And they chose the exact week to do it. There is no coincidence here.

While I have no intention of arguing the point with anyone, I will make it my number one goal to take this show down. And if Comedy Central and MTV do not want to do the right thing, they need to be punished as well.

I would hope that all Catholics are livid today. And I would think that all non-Catholic Christians are just as disgusted as the rest of us.

We will not stand for this. And we should not. Please do what you can.
