In a strongly worded column published in his archdiocesan newspaper, Archbishop Joseph Naumann has labeled Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Kaine as “an orthodox member of his party, fulling embracing his party’s platform, but a cafeteria Catholic, picking and choosing the teachings of the Catholic Church that are politically convenient.”

That term is frowned on by one bishop I know…I wonder what Pope Francis thinks about the term.
 
It’s about time we heard something like this from a bishop of the Church. Keeping silent is not working. Even if this doesn’t work and convince Senator Kaine of his wrongdoing, at least it has been made crystal clear to the rest of the faithful that his stance is in no way compatible with the teachings of the Church on abortion.

Well, I got a chuckle out of that. It seems to me that the Church has suffered from an excess of sensitivity for about half a century now! For the history books this may become known as the Age of Sentimentality in the Church. But doctrine doesn’t depend on sentiment.

Obviously you are speaking hyperbole, because unless you know Kaine intimately, how could you conclude he is, or even seems, “opposed to all Church teaching.”?🤷

Fortunately for the archbishop he was not posting that opinion here on this forum inasmuch as we are prohibited from making such accusations, even when the truth is so readily apparent.

Words matter, friend. The optimal word in my comment was seems, which would imply that I don’t know.

However he clearly opposes the Church in several very graves matters such as his extreme stance on abortion and SSM. He opposes life and family…those are cornerstones of Church teachings.

He gave the impression that he attempted unsuccessfully to convince Virginians to abolish the death penalty. Yet, with regard to legalized abortion, I am not aware of Senator Kaine making a similar effort to convince his constituents to work for public policies that protect the lives of the unborn. Instead, he appears eager to champion not only maintaining the status quo, but actually expanding abortion rights.”
