Your attitude is confusing. I get the impression that you under pressure not to ask for the pay increase you seem to require. Try to remember it is not generally a matter of can’t pay, more they don’t want to. 😉

ATB
It’s irrelevant if they “want” or if they “can.” She gets paid what they want to pay for her services. If she doesn’t like it, she can quit and see if she can do better elsewhere. I haven’t seen her whine about it.

Do you give raises for anyone who thinks they deserve it?

Different people have different reasons for being there, and it’s certainly not always because they can’t find anything else.
True, but I was responding to the post that this woman would like to keep her job at Walmart but needs to make more money.

I’m truly baffled by the lack of reference to the Catholic teaching on work and remuneration. I’m pretty sure it would be hard to find a teaching that calls demands for a just wage “whining”. If the just wage concept exists, then it must also be attainable.

At this point in the thread, really, especially at this time of year, all I can do is pray for God to bless us with this wisdom in these matters. I have commented more than once on this forum about contemporary attitudes to the poor. Like many Catholics, I receive a Saint of the Day email daily; there are numerous references to the poor. I have never once seen it reported that saints of any age had anything but the greatest care and respect for the poor, so it stands to reason that as our exemplars of behavior, we are to imitate them. I have also read the prophets from Ezekiel to Hosea, and while they did not mince words with regard to ill-treatment of the poor, I am at a loss to remember them chastising*** those who work dutifully***, for failing to make enough to live on.

At this time when we give thanks for what we have been blessed with, it helps to remember that not a single one of us attained what we have solely by our own efforts. We all, without exception, stand on the shoulders of those who came before us and those who crossed our paths in life. The fact that everyone may not have gotten the same quality or quantity of help, guidance or skills as we have been blessed with, is something we should all meditate on this Thanksgiving. Have a thoughtful Thanksgiving everyone! I think I’ve said all I set out to say on this thread. 🙂

I call bologna on that quote. Even minimum wage is over $15K for a full time employee. The average checker salary at Walmart is over $9 and hour and it’s more for first level managers. I am sure there are some hard case stories out there but this one is more fiction than fact.
I bet it’s after tax income. Assuming 28% in taxes/deductions it would be about $19k which works out to about $9/hour. Perhaps it’s more than 28% if she has health care for her family

The average is $8.52/hr. Some make as low as $7.00/hr. Not much to be bragging about unless your the owner I guess.

I negotiate.

My question is not related to Walmart in particular…but remember when “we the people” (thanks to Obama) had to bail out GM…I believe workers were making around $30 per hour…now new employees make around $14 per hour…not disputing that amount…but why aint “we the people” who bailed them out…seeing lower prices instead of rising prices on GM vehicles.😃

Thank you seekerz. This is certainly food for thought. May we all have a blessed Thanksgiving and Advent.

People who make that little and have dependents don’t pay income tax. They get the earned income tax credit, which is a refundable credit. IOW, you get it whether you paid in or not.

That’s the average ($8.52) for checkers. No one makes $7 since that’s below the minimum wage. And, of course, some make the minimum wage. That’s why it’s the minimum wage. It’s the salary at the bottom of the salary scale. The average for CS managers is according to several sites, around $30K. Even on the forums where people complain about walmart, they have CS managers at around $12/hour (about $25K).

.25 is a credibility gap
Yes, in this case since he is claiming that Walmart is paying at least some of its employees below minimum wage. It’s not the amount that’s important. It’s the facts that amount represents.

Well, for one thing GM still owes the government a lot of money. If the company had gone bankrupt, somebody would have bought it out and the taxpayer (and consumer, presumably) would not have to pay that debt.

It is amazing how many people’s solutions to helping the poor is :
  1. Have somebody else pay higher taxes
  2. Have somebody else pay higher wages
As I said before its easy to be compassionate with somebody else’s money
