We (shoppers) have a very large role to play in all this.

If we don’t shop on holidays, then stores (not just WalMart) will find it unprofitable to open on those days.

Let’s do our shopping before or after a holiday, not on the holiday itself, so that more people will be able to spend the holidays with their families.

.

I hope this gains momentum and gives Wal-Mart a big hit to their profits this season.

I somehow question whether its prudent for people who can easily be replaced to engage in this kind of activity, but even Walmart agrees that it is their choice. Walmart may be a bad place to work, but I worked at several bad places when I was young and poor. It always gave me an incentive to stay in school and get myself to a situation where I have more bargaining power. The best way to stick it to a bad employer is with a better job elsewhere IMO.

Then there are companies like Wegmans and Costco which are repotted to treat their employees well. Even Target treats their employees better than Wal-Mart.

I think it may be a problem of greed at t he corporate level.

How’d that work out for Hostess workers?
Yup, and Walmart employees are even easier to replace than Hostess workers. The experience and training threshold is VERY LOW. Anybody can apply.

My guess is that if Walmart were ever to go on strike that lasted more than about a day and a half, there’d be more people willing to cross the line than work in the store on a regular day. And they’d work for less too.

There are people out there trying to figure out how to get enough to eat. Will they cross a picket line for a job? Yes indeed, they will.

I hope Walmart fires all these people. That’s not uncharitable, it’s reality.

Well, there’s a fair chance they will. They’ve got the purse strings.

Doesn’t make it right.

Nobody is forced to work at Walmart.

I believe they are a couple hundred people out of a million walmsrt workers who are going to participate in this. Its another Union driven stunt. You would think they would be layiing low after the Hostess debacle

👍

I wold have thought this would be the dominant perspective here. There will always be some jobs that truly REQUIRE people to work on holidays, but retail is not a requirement. We don’t NEED to shop on Thanksgiving, we could sacrifice that one day so that others could be with their families.

Most people who work at walmart know what they are getting into. I worked there for 4 and a half years, I was never treated badly. It was a decent job. I worked Thanksgiving almost every year, it was a really slow day and we got holiday pay. Walmart only closed for 36 hours, from 6:00 pm Christmas eve until 6:00 am the day after Christmas. People actually really complained about the fact they closed (customers) I never understood that. Anyway, I knew what I was getting into when I took a job there. I was never treated badly. I left for a higher paying job later on.

Anyway, I don’t think it is good idea to walkout or anything, Like I said, it’s part of the job.

I didn’t know next Friday was a Holiday?

The workers have to be there on Thanksgiving to prepare the store for the Black Friday Greed-o-Rama. Target is doing the same thing, bringing all their workers in on Thanksgiving to get ready.

Well, nobody ever accused unions of being smart, just greedy.

Would you rather they collect unemployment? For some people, Walmart is the best job they can get.
No, I would rather they shut up and get back to the work they were hired to do. If its the best job they could get then they should just be grateful and get back to work.

Correct. People who work in hospitals, power plants, paper mills, restaurants and all kinds of other lines of work also work on holidays. So what’s the deal with Walmart? Who do they think they are?

If that is true wouldn’t they walk out on Thursday?
