That’s a good one Scott…I’ll bet that town could stand up well against foreign aggression.

BTW, your view is about to take another hit with the acclaimed film…LINCOLN.

Our mind control machine is doing better than yours…or is it just our ideas?
YOu do realize that the #1 entity that commits aggression against a nation is…ANOTHER NATION. Governments are responsible for more death and violence than any other entity in all of human history.

I’ll bet that stat is quite selective and would not stand a careful examination.

Regarding your second point…in relative historic terms…meaning population comparisons through the years…religion has it all over secular governments for deaths caused.

Have you found that utopia yet?

. Better conditions for Walmart workers would lead for better conditions for all the folks who work low wage jobs. Wouldn't it be great if more people had time to spend with their families and the family unit got stronger? Wouldn't it be great if more jobs paid MORE than welfare so more people would be able to work, pay taxes and put money back into the economy? I can remember a time when the only people who worked on Thanksgiving were police, firefighters, doctors, nurses and others who sacrificed their holidays to keep us safe, keep the lights on and perform critical services. What was wrong with that?
Seeker1961, regarding the family unit getting stronger - it is the social welfare policies instituted in the 60’s which helped to undermine families in America - not Walmart. I used to have to work on holidays. I didn’t like it. So I took steps to get myself into a better situation. I worked in lousy jobs that paid poorly, w/ long hours. I didn’t complain (well maybe a little) , I found a better job.

Regarding the living wage, who should get one? What is a “living wage” ? Should the teenager working at McDonalds living at home with parents get a living wage? The guy working a 2nd job part-time to pay off a debt or save money for vacation - should he get a living wage? Should there be a government bureaucracy that looks at everyone’s situation and decides who is eligible for a “living wage” ??? We live in an age of working on holidays because consumers demand it - they want to buy the TV, or other service. And businesses want to make money.
As I have said MORE THAN ONCE-in this thread-make all the money you want. I will be thrilled for you. However, if you wouldn’t accept the conditions you place on your workers for yourself or your family, then you need to step back and think it through again.

As for how the CAF universe feels about the poor-take a look at the comments here and on any other thread where someone dares to speak up for the workers or the poor and even hints at criticizing a business owner.
I could say the same about certain CAF posters - look at the comments here or on any other thread where someone defends someone like Romney - look at how many point out his wealth and priviledge. Look at the comments when someone even hints at suggesting that some might be better off working than getting welfare: " you hate the poor!" It works both ways.

I am a conservative. I don’t like Walmart - I don’t like the quality of what they sell, no matter what the price and I don’t care for the atmosphere either - its depressing. So I don’t shop there. I also don’t like how they treat their workers. I will pay a little more for higher quality and better customer service. If I worked for Walmart, I’d be looking for a better gig somewhere else. But Walmart is successful because enough people like really cheap stuff.

I’m proud to say that i’ve never been inside a walmart before and plan never to do so as long as they maintain their anti-union policy. I wish all the employees seeking to better themselves and have rights in the workplace all the best.

I have found a couple of them. A lot has to be put into place before I finalize things. Expatriation is more complicated than simply saying “I quit” and moving.

Name one religion that has killed more than Stalin or Mao, unless you are considering atheistic communism a “religion”. Or are you gonna go back to the absurd fabrication that the Catholic Church nearly exterminated Europe during the Inquisition.

Many assumptions about low wage employees seem to assume they are stuck where they are, bound to the job forever. That may be true to some extent for those with disabilities, but people can and do make decisions that alter the trajectories of their lives. The labor pool is far from static.

True, and that’s great. However, just because you’re only at a job for a short time, it doesn’t mean you lose your right to be treated with dignity and respect.

I agree with your principle. What I do not see is how asking employees to work on a holiday for the sake of sales denies the dignity of the employee or fails to show them respect. I would think it rather obvious that anyone who works in retail sales understands the importance of sales to sustain their wages, and thus their dignity.

I do not like Black Friday and I do not like Walmart, but they make money and they produce jobs. Maybe they also mistreat employees at times, I couldn’t say, but working a holiday is not mistreatment.

I think part of the problem is that it is easy to define anything we don’t like as mistreatment. I know some college faculty members who think they are being mistreated if they make less than $100k per year.

Personally, I don’t particularly like Walmart, although I will on occasion shop there. While I have on occasion worked retail and it is not necessarily a picnic, it is also not the coal mines. It also gave me an incentive to stay in school so that I could have a better chance of dictating my own terms of employment.

Really behind the hand wringing and crocodile tears for the Wal mart worker bees is the lament that there is no such thing as a Holiday in America.

This f
renzy that is getting pushed ever so far back as to make the holiday unrecognizable from a hedonistic shopping lust bonanza. Thanksgiving is morphing into a shop till you drop orgy weekend.

I agree. And it is EVERY Holiday, not just Thanksgiving. I know practical Americans will not go for it, but I like the Jewish concept of Holi Days- a day outside of time, where you do not shop, cook ( yep, gotta prepare everything before the big day) work… When we were observing the Sabbath, there was such a profound sense of peace and…holiness!

Unions served a purpose at one time. Now they have evolved into thugs, strong arming companies to capitulate to their demands. They have out lived their usefulness.

I think Unions have been through a down cycle and will begin to show growth over the next several years. Many are tired of growing income disparity and the use people like a too, attitude of many businesses.

That’s never been my experience and I’ve worked union my entire adult life. Bargaining is give and take; neither side is required by law to accept each others demands at the bargaining table.

You and I will have to agree to disagree on this thread.

Why not cease promoting your politically conservative motivated class warfare.

Working people today are not wearing ski masks and putting sawed-off shotguns to the heads of poor, powerless, rich employers.

If someone earning $20 million a year for his family can’t afford to pay an employee $30,000 a year then maybe that person should be defeated in business by the alpha person making $21 million a year for his family that can afford to pay an employee $30,000 a year.

Collective bargaining is getting what you can like Bill Gates and agents for professional athletes. It’s capitalism.

Sounds to me like you envy union members that are middle-class or lower-middle-class or even lower-class (e,g., part time UPS workers).

There is a lot of un-Catholic rhetoric on this site. Period.

Jeanne like many conservatives on this site promote class warfare and promote envy.

I try not to be envious of a Pope; CEO; Union leader; or Professional athlete.

Only in some fields. In others, they provide the best means of training, and a relatively sure verification of basic competencies. In others still, they are the best defense against being worked like a slave.

While they may provide training, they also tend to be a barrier to entry. The electricians union in my state comes to mind. Of course, it is not just the unions, the ABA and the AMA also work to restrict entry in their respective fields as well.

I belonged to a union for 6 years. It was a good one, and kept the managers from running rough shod over the workers which I was grateful for. However, they did engage in some pretty shamless political propoganda. There is a need for unions with some jobs/industries. Others are a throwback to an earlier era when there weren’t state and federal (and local) laws protecting workers and aren’t really necessary anymore. When I think of unions today, I think of the public sector unions which should never have the ability to collective bargain - can you imagine bargaining with an entity that has access to the public coffers? I also think of Richard Trumka, who, since I don’t want to get banned I will refrain from saying what I think about him other than I think “card check” etc. which he pushed is basically bullying.
