I can’t figure out the point of marriage licensing, conservatives say it’s because government should protect marriage.

Fine job they are doing of that.
 
Pray and do penance. Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy. For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
 
The war on family values and Christ continues by the liberals…

But not by the people by voting, by government.

31 states have had gay ‘marriage’ on the ballot, 31 states have said no to legalizing gay ‘marriage.’

Prop 8 was overturned by government, but the people of California voted for a ban on gay ‘marriage.’

Do I understand you correctly? You are clapping because homosexuals can take part in a charade that mimics marriage? Two plugs cannot give electric power; two sockets have the same result. Two homosexuals are not life-giving by their very nature - so why get married? Marriage is to sanctify the sexual union of one man and one woman - allowing two men to imitate this (or two women), is an abominable mockery. Apart from the fact that our Creator, Our Father in Heaven, describes homosexual acts as an abomination; every reasonable person must think the same. If these acts were not so disgusting, they would be laughable. Giving them the appearance of credence through a state-enforced formality means we are living in an insane dictatorship where the lunatics have taken over the asylum.
 
We are on the downhill side of gaining non-discrimination in marriage. It is just a matter of time before marriage equality is normal. Wouldn’t it be wiser for the Church to grow on this topic? It’s current stance paints itself squarely into a the corner usually occupied by organizations that would institutionalize bigotry. There is nothing wrong with admitting fault, and then moving on. People would understand and also forgive the leadership of the Church for their sins in this area. How sad is it that Benedict has called the practice of “moral relativism” a danger, while in fact, it has been the cornerstone of the maturation and continued relevance of the Church, in a changing world. Other hardcore minority is vocal on this site, but one must wonder how many Catholics are embarrassed. When institutions or political parties are hijacked by extremists, it creates hardship for moderate and reasonable people.

The Catholic Church should never give in to homosexual marriage, and probably never will. The problem isn’t the Church, it’s the people. They brought this camel into the tent and got what they deserve.

The extension of license and privilege is, by definition, a process of discrimination. It gives to a particular sort of couple that which is denied to another (like siblings or business partners). It can only be done by the state if it has a Rational Basis under which such a behavior furthers the Public Interest.

No, not really. We saw this same sort of normalized degeneracy in Greece, and Rome, and many other decadent cultures. It always ends in one of two ways: decline into collapse, or reformation to respect the Natural Law. The Church, however, shall ever endure long after empires drunk on libertine nonsense have rendered themselves to dust.

That’s an amusingly euphemistic spin to put on it, but it betrays a complete failure to comprehend the nature of the Church or of Moral Law.

You’re right about one thing, it has created a hardship for us reasonable people that gay “rights” fanatics have hijacked one of our political parties.

You have to be a Protestant or Atheist to have such a view of the stance of the Catholic Church on such issues as abortion, contraception and homosexual acts. All of these issues are about the difference between life and death. In every one of these, our wonderful Catholic Church does not give a fig for the prevailing opinions of this decadent world. Our Pope Benedict XVI is deeply devoted to Our Blessed Lord and has been blessed in turn with a mighty intellect. His books are a joy to read. Try learning about the teachings of our Catholic Magisterium and the Church Fathers - these teachings are also impervious to the prevailing winds of fashion. The Truth is the Truth. The Pope is correct to recognise the threat of relativism - which states that truth can be bent to fit whatever - times, people, whims, weather, Protestant churches - now numbering in their tens of thousands because they cannot hold to any truth! So are all the states in the union going to recognize common Law marriage bc there are 7 states that have recognized that form of marriage since before they joined this great union…
