The ordination of this deacon included an aboriginal dance. In case anyone thought it was a harmless entertainment, before commencing the dance he explained that its purpose was to invoke the spirits of the animals and the protection of the air, earth and ocean.

During the Mass, Bishop Mascord of Wollongong invited Butler to join him in purifying the congregation. As the bishop sprinkled the faithful with holy water, Butler followed him with a smoking basket of vegetation which in aboriginal belief is a spell to drive away evil spirits.

It’s shameful and unfortunate that plenty of clergy, including bishops, have gone against God’s teaching. The RC Church is a big tree. A big tree has many dead leaves and branches. I remember there was a report that Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster, once visited a Hindu temple and made offering to a Hindu god, which is clearly an act of idolatry. That’s why we as Catholics need to be able to identify these sinful acts and constantly be aware of what God wants us to do. The Devil is always trying to infiltrate the Church, and he’s not going to give up until the very end.

Thank you for bringing this to light.

We live in unusual times.

Even the presence of clergymen at heathen ceremonies, wrong though it is, does not compare with the actual worship of false gods in a Catholic Church by a bishop.

And none of the parishioners thought this odd and out of place?

Probably they are under the impression you can’t contradict a bishop in good standing.

Its actually liturgical inculturation and that is allowed. It is also a welcome to country, also allowed. The welcome to country has been experienced with all Popes who have graced our shores.

Liturgical inculturation has been a thing for quite some time.

Who is claiming the explanaition of the welcome to country?
And none of the parishioners thought this odd and out of place?
Of course not because it was a welcome to country for the new and old clergy. It takes people who dont understand to get all ’ whats going on’ about it. We saw that big time with the Amazon Synod at the Vatican.

The fact they got a welcome to country is huge in Aboriginal culture. Hope they got some didge playing too.

It might be best to know and understand the welcome to country before assuming whats going on.
Yes, and this is the problem I have with virtually everybody who posts here all bothered because some priest or bishop from country X/ indigenous culture X did something during Mass that they don’t think is right. They don’t get it, they’re never going to get it, and unless it looks like a Western European Mass (preferably a TLM) it’s wrong to them. Same old same old.

Welcome to country is as far from entertainment as you can get. The smoking ceremony contains no spells.
This interpretation is the product of western assumptions of a very ancient culture.
Aboriginal spirituality is linked to the land, the land owns the people, the people dont own the land.
The dreamtime is where everything was created. Read about it.

So true. If it were so bad every Pope that has been here in my life time would have totally rejected it.
Lifesitenews posted an article dissing this welcome to country and they called the Aboriginal elder here, ‘a man dressed savage-like’ . A Caf person posted it on another thread. So unimagionably ignorant a term. You might expect that thinking and terminology in Colonial 15th Century England, but not today. Aboriginal people were not given the right to vote until the 1960s.

See there you go applying western definitions to a culture and spirituality you know absolutely nothing about.

God allows liturgical inculturation, why else would the Pope allow it. We are not more Catholic then the Pope.
Do you understand welcome to country at all, or just saw one clip and decided its invoking demons.

It’s a ‘Welcome to Country’ or ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ ceremony. It’s essentially public protocol for most community events of any notability in Australia. I don’t think most Australians (except Indigenous peoples) attach any particular religious or spiritual significance to the ceremony. Most treat it as a matter of courtesy.

Of course, it has caused all sorts of controversies in Australian Christianity because of concerns that its performance in Christian contexts is syncretic or idolatrous. The Anglican Diocese of Sydney tried banning the ceremonies in their diocesan properties (churches, schools and such), but there was vociferous public outcry that they allowed its performances to continue.

In all honesty, I’m rather indifferent to the ceremony largely because it’s proliferated so heavily throughout the public sphere. I’m not even sure why the ceremony was conducted for this particular occasion. Is there an especially large number of Indigenous Catholics in the Diocese of Wollongong? Was the deacon being ordained an Indigenous Australian?

What exactly do you think you are seeing?

Ok let me say this again very slowly, Aboriginal spirituality is very different and very ancient. It is the oldest continuous culture on earth. Western Culture thinks it owns land. Aboriginal culture thinks the land owns it, just as the land owns everything else on it.
Aboriginal people dont think you can buy the land .

So tell me, who owns the land and everything on it if we are getting down to brass tacks.

I don’t know the answer but here is something to ponder:

Encyclical Laudito Si, H.H. Pope Francis (2015)
1. “LAUDATO SI’, mi’ Signore” – “Praise be to you, my Lord”. In the words of this beautiful canticle, Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. “Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with coloured flowers and herbs”. [1]
[1] Canticle of the Creatures , in Francis of Assisi: Early Documents , vol. 1, New York-London-Manila, 1999, 113-114.
Saint Francis of Assisi, Canticle of the Sun (translation Bill Barrett)
Most high, all powerful, all good Lord! All praise is yours, all glory, all honor, and all blessing. To you, alone, Most High, do they belong. No mortal lips are worthy to pronounce your name.

Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures, especially through my lord Brother Sun, who brings the day; and you give light through him. And he is beautiful and radiant in all his splendor! Of you, Most High, he bears the likeness.

Be praised, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars; in the heavens you have made them, precious and beautiful.

Be praised, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air, and clouds and storms, and all the weather, through which you give your creatures sustenance.

Be praised, My Lord, through Sister Water; she is very useful, and humble, and precious, and pure.

Be praised, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom you brighten the night. He is beautiful and cheerful, and powerful and strong.

Be praised, my Lord, through our sister Mother Earth, who feeds us and rules us, and produces various fruits with colored flowers and herbs.

Be praised, my Lord, through those who forgive for love of you; through those who endure sickness and trial. Happy those who endure in peace, for by you, Most High, they will be crowned.

Be praised, my Lord, through our Sister Bodily Death, from whose embrace no living person can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin! Happy those she finds doing your most holy will. The second death can do no harm to them.

Praise and bless my Lord, and give thanks, and serve him with great humility.
