We have a POPE!!!!

Earlier today, and prior to the white smoke, I was asking myself, “If Cardinal O’Malley is elected, I wonder whether he’ll choose the name Pope Francis, since he is a Franciscan?”

And so, I already had a possible “Pope Francis” on my mind. You can imagine my (pleasant) shock when it was announced that Cardinal Bergoglio asked to be named Pope Francis!

I keep hearing everyone say the Spirit chose him. We can only hope so. The Spirit does not elect the Pope, nor does he force the cardinals to elect the right man.

Besides, we do not follow men. We follow Christ and His Church. We have God’s promise that even if they elect the worst Pope possible that the gates of hell will not prevail against the Church.

I want Pope Francis to be the best of all choices-- I want him to be the Holy Spirit’s choice-- I want him to lead the Church forward-- to bring about renewal-- to put behind it all the scandal of the past-- to make the gospel of Christ a light for the world. We all want that.

I cried a little when the Pope was elected. There’s been a lot of hype leading up to his election, and we have put in a lot of prayers in hopes of a great new era of the Church and its leadership. But no need to get hysterical. The real joy will come when we find in practice that he is everything we hope he will be. I’ll settle for half a Francis-- Francis was incomparable. If Pope Francis is half a Francis the Church and all its members will prosper. 🙂

I’m not sure how much He trusts man, but He does agree to take whoever we elect Pope and work with him. We’ve had some pretty bad ones in our long history, but Christ kept his promise and did not allow the gates of hell to prevail.

Name one perfect man for Christ to hand the Church over to, starting with Peter?

I saw a humble man, and haven’t seen any ‘accusations’ substantiated. In fact, I am impressed with what I have read about him. He is our leader, and not the other way around.

I will pray for God to speak to His Church, and the world, through our new Holy Father. God Bless Pope Francis.
 
The only thing I find aggravating is not something about our blessed new Pope, but something that the NYT and some others (even some Catholics) keep saying: “The future of the Church is in the south.”

Way to write off the North. Thank you. We need even more premature funerals. :rolleyes:

Actually, the present of the Church is in the south. Any man or woman of Hope and Faith should be declaring that the future of the Church is universal: all 4 corners.

Don’t be quick to judge. I did not say one word against Pope Francis. How could I? I never heard of him until today. I know nothing about him except what I have read here or heard in the media, and that is not much.

The virtue of humility would be difficult to evaluate on the basis of a single TV appearance. I appreciated Pope Francis’s praise of Pope Emeritus Benedict, and I appreciated his humble request for us to pray for him [Pope Francis]. I also appreciated his choice of Francis for his Papal name. Francis is my favorite saint, apart from Mary and Joseph.

We should all pray that God speaks to the world and to the Church through Pope Francis, just as God spoke to the world and the Church through Pope Benedict and Pope John Paul II before him. We have been very fortunate to have had very good Popes over the last 100 years.

Pope Francis is the head of the Roman Catholic Church. The Church is not a democracy. I pray that he does well as leader of the Church.

I get the feeling that the media is elated because they (for whatever reason) think this Pope is uber-“liberal” in their minds and believe he’s going to call Vatican III or something and start ordaining women.

Idk, I’m just confused by their happiness over this election, they’re never happy that a Catholic becomes pope. They must think something “big” is going to happen. But I believe they’ll be sorely disappointed.

I think you’re right. This Pope promises to be unequivocal in all the issues that the media opposes the most.

Maybe it’s the fact that he’s a Jesuit. The media may have a warped notion that all Jesuits are liberal thinkers. I was taught by Jesuits; I think that reputation is undeserved, and comes from a handful of liberal Jesuits. One reason I think there has never been a Jesuit Pope is because part of their rule is to never seek office or rank.

I read that this Pope, Francis, when he was in contention with Benedict last election, made a plea to his fellow cardinals not to vote for him [Jorge Bergogli]; if true, that is quite a commendation. .
 
I do believe the Church has a very good leader. My prayers are with him. Thy Will be done!

It looks like secular sites are talking about the Jesuit part…how Jesuits are not known for being orthodox…and how this selection is a step in the right direction.

I really hope that they are wrong and that this Pope is not what I think of when I think of “Jesuit”.

As predicted. They’re an odd bunch … for people who are nominally religious or just plain out atheistic or agnostic they sure care what the RCC is doing. :rolleyes:
