If the Holy Spirit could do whatever He wants then the Church would not be in the state it is in. I hardly think the Holy Spirit would choose for priest to hurt children or cheat others. Again, they have to be open to the Holy Spirit to be holy men.

What state? Having sinners?

The Holy Spirit can guide the Church as He wills. God will not in this world take away the freewill of some to sin. However, this is not relevant to the topic.
 
Perhaps this has been debunked already, but I’ve seen on several sites the claim that Pope Francis supports the use of contraception to prevent the spread of disease. Does anyone know where this claim originated? Were his words misinterpreted?

Any direction/resources you guys can provide will be much appreciated. One of my friends was very troubled by this, and I’ve done some digging to try and help him, but so far no real luck.

I am sorry, it has been relevant to the topic, as the topic has been quite broad. It was brought up in terms of the Holy Spirit working through the cardinals and if all the cardinals allowed the Holy Spirit to work through them to select this Pope. How is that not relevant?

Because the Holy Spirit guides the Catholic Church. The procedure of choosing a pope is a matter of spiritual discernment and openness to that guidance. This has nothing to do with the Holy Spirit keeping every member of the Catholic Church immaculate and devoid of free will. A priest or lay person who committed child abuse did not seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in that decision.

“But…but… child abuse,” is not the answer to all things Catholic.
 
Or, another angle on this pnewton, is that the ability/power of the Holy Spirit to do something is not the same as the requirement to do it, the necessity of doing it. That would make God Himself a slave to a kind of automation that contradicts the very ultimate and absolute freedom of God, a freedom which. importantly, he lovingly shares with us.🙂

I don’t know if you caught a fascinating segment on Women of Grace. (Maybe not because of your unconventional work schedule.) Johnette was interviewing someone, I forget whom, on the process of election there in the Vatican. Apparently it really is true about the Holy Spirit’s guidance when the Cardinals are so disposed/open. (Again, the other important factor in the dynamic!) Some Cardinals had shared that with the guest. It’s practically like a physical presence, close to what the apostles experienced at Pentecost. Very moving, and very reinforcing/assuring to them that if they cooperate with that Spirit, they can trust the right result to occur.

Perhaps that (fairly recent, obviously) episode is available on podcast.

Yes, this has already been covered. I was just pointing out why it was a relevant to the topic.
