Acts 7:2
And he [Stephen] said, "Hear me, brethren and fathers!

Acts 22:1
Paul’s Defense before the Jews ] " Brethren and fathers, hear my defense which I now offer to you."

1 Corinthians 4:15
For if you were to have countless tutors in Christ, yet you would not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel.

Ephesians 6:4
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Colossians 3:21
Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart.

1 John 2:13
I am writing to you, fathers

1 John 2:14
I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning I have written to you

So are they all disobeying Jesus? They are calling men “fathers”. Well? Or are you guys going to put the old Fundie spin on these verses too

Back on topic, there is no question what position Luther and some others held. I do wonder if now they have backed off of that position. If so, when and why. Also, why keep the language?

This statement didn’t do anything but cause people fear and dread

Is this in effect? is it in the Catechism?

“We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty.”

But we (Catholics) generally don’t use that language anymore.

Similarly, don’t you think Lutherans should reconsider the “Pope is the anti-Christ” language?

An excellent answer!!👍
Thanks. A Lutheran friend of mine (Wisconsin Synod) told me those were the two answers he likes to give when asked “When were you saved?” (This was several years ago, so I don’t remember his exact words.)

You don’t remember the exact words but you should remember the day you met Jesus Christ.

Typically “Before the foundation of the world, 2000 years ago on the cross, at baptism, am being saved, and will be saved at the Second Advent.” 👍

Me thinks we are http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u298/hogndog/offtopicsmiley1.gif

Vicar of Christ.

A substitute Christ…

“For the Roman pontiff (pope), by reason of his office as VICAR OF CHRIST, and as pastor of the entire Church has full, supreme, and universal POWER over the whole Church, a power which he can always exercise UNHINDERED.”

–CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1994, P. 254 #882

“We declare, say, define, and pronounce that it is absolutely NECESSARY FOR the SALVATION of every human creature to be SUBJECT TO THE ROMAN PONTIFF (POPE).”
