We need gun owners and everyone else to speak for forgiveness

A safe society
what does your safe society look like? please square it for me with the bible.

the parable of the weeds indicates to me we will always have evil with us until the end. how can you have a safe society when evil will do what it wants regardless of the laws of man?

but will you live to give forgiveness if he has an illegal gun? why take the right to self defense away? the church allows it?

catechism # 2264 Love toward oneself remains a fundamental principle of morality. Therefore it is legitimate to insist on respect for one’s own right to life. Someone who defends his life is not guilty of murder even if he is forced to deal his aggressor a lethal blow:
Your position is solid, and has merit, for sure.
who are gun owners supposed to forgive?
The same people the rest of us can forgive, those people we hold something against. See the OP for examples.
the church allows self-defense
Yes, absolutely.
do you need forgiveness for keeping a teaching of the church?
Not sure I understand your question. The point of the thread is that if we want to create a safe society, we begin by forgiving one another rather than holding something against people. I focused in a little on gun owners because gun owners are people who are generally concerned about the safety of society and are willing to go the extra mile to ensure the safety of themselves and others. Gun owners of all faiths can lead society in the effort of promoting safety by encouraging forgiveness, changing the climate of resentment.

forgiveness is act releasing feelings of resentment to someone who has harmed you.

i would not dare put myself in the same category as the victims or their families. to me forgiveness is not mine to give or do i have resentment to keep.

my duty is to pray for the souls of both.

YMMV

Well, we can begin with what Jesus calls the “kingdom” which is “on Earth as it is in Heaven”. Jesus does not use the parable of the weeds to discourage people from building the Kingdom, right? No, He encouraged people to forgive one another, to love one another, to have mercy.

If people who ended up murdering had been encouraged to forgive, perhaps the murders would not have happened. Do you see what I mean about how all of us can make a change? To the degree that I have encouraged mercy, forgiveness, and reconciliation, to that degree I have helped our society choose a better path.

Let’s set a different agenda than the media and the politicians.

Here is what Jesus said that guides our forgiveness:

Mark 11:25New International Version (NIV)

25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.

We may not personally be harmed, but we may still hold something against someone. So if I hold anything against a politician, for example, I am encouraged to forgive him.
to me forgiveness is not mine to give or do i have resentment to keep.
If you do not hold something against anyone, that call to forgive does not apply to you. But still, if you hear someone else spouting off about a person or group of people, you have the opportunity to step in and say something!

if people were encouraged to believe in Jesus they may not have murdered anyone either and would reap the reward of an eternity in heaven.

a person can forgive and not do wrong but still not enter the gates of heaven. if we give them the gospel; forgiveness is included.

There is something to be said, though, for taking a wise approach. For example, apparently the fellow down in Texas that murdered those people in a church was an atheist (former Christian, I think). Asking him to “believe in Jesus” when he expressed some animosity would have not likely helped.

I think I said in the OP that all major religions value forgiveness. Many atheists also value forgiveness.

All of us can encourage forgiveness, and we have the backing of our religions! 😀

I feel much safer knowing the majority of people do not have guns.

Well this is great you have good feelings.

But you are not the immediate victim here. My post was not centered around “you” or “your feelings”.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy that you have good “feelings” here.

But the fact that there is a shifting from violent crimes with guns, to violent crimes without guns in the UK . . . does not reassure all subjects from the UK. Especially the most defenseless and vulnerable of the Queen’s subjects. And most especially, the woman in the article I cited who was so brutally victimized.

.
CCC 2321 The prohibition of murder does not abrogate the right to render an unjust aggressor unable to inflict harm. Legitimate defense is a grave duty for whoever is responsible for the lives of others or the common good.

But in nations without guns, they too would have a safer society
Societies would be much safer if there were no cars or alcohol or trans fats. Instead of banning these, individuals should be responsible with what they do have and everyone can live happily ever after.

Also, what about all those who use firearms to protect themselves? Do we just say, “oh well, defend yourself with something else”?

I’m sure with prices coming down it’s only a matter of time before everyone has an ICBM in their front lawn.
What would compel you to present such an argument? You did not even address my point. What would you say to an individual who stopped a home intruder or a robber on the street? You go ahead and make an “Why don’t I just own a nuclear bomb” argument? Or do you say, “you used a firearm responsibily and I won’t take it away from you”?

He who lives by the sword dies by the sword? (Rev 13)
those who persecute will be persecuted. those who use the sword wrong will die by it.

ST JPII has spoken to self defense and i have posted his words in other threads.

another thought is that in one sense it is a defense for capital punishment
those who kill unnecessarily will be killed.

Very good points.

I think you must have misunderstood my post. I said:
But in nations without guns, they too would have a safer society if forgiveness was always encouraged.
I was not making an anti-gun statement, but a pro-forgiveness statement. I was responding to the statement about mass-murders in Rwanda, which took place without guns.

Will you join me in encouraging people to forgive, for the creation of a safer society?

LumberJack:

Is this a call from you for Governments to disarm themselves?

Is this a call from you for the Pope’s Swiss Guard to abandon their firearms?

.

Do you think because good, honest law-abiding citizens want to be able to protect their families IF life-and-death danger rapidly, unexpectedly approaches, that ALL of those people are “LIVING BY THE SWORD”??

Hopefully you are not jumping to THAT unfounded conclusion right?

Or is it possible they want to live “IN PEACE” . . . BUT . . . if a proverbial “bad guy” wants to do his family harm, that he has the means to immediately protect his family?

.
Do you acknowledge frequent DEFENSIVE firearm usage in the USA INCLUDING in the San Antonio area massacre?

WHY quote “he who LIVES BY the sword” when virtually NO Second Amendment supporter wants to “LIVE” by swords or LIVE by firearms?

What are you referring to (please clarify LumbarJack)?

Thank you in advance for your clarification.

Hi Folks. Remember, the reason why I even mentioned gun owners is because gun owners are especially concerned, actively so, about the safety of our society.

Can we focus on the forgiveness? For example, can we forgive those who are ideologically in favor of/against laws that liberalize gun ownership?

Most certainly we can focus on forgiving people responsible for these abuses.

For example, let us be forgiving of Governments. Who have stripped their own citizens of their freedoms and means of self-defense. Who are far and away the biggest abuser of firearms, abuser of citizens, and abusers of Rights.

Absolutely.

So tell me, how does one go about forgiving the government? (which is basically a group of people)
