I did as a kid but the “talisman” aspect of it kinda turns me off as an adult

I was enrolled in Carmel with the Brown Scapular two weeks ago, and I am so glad I did! I have noticed that I am not nearly as tempted to sin as I was before I enrolled. This is definitely a blessing! 👍 Thank you, Blessed Mother and Lord Jesus and Fergal in Ireland! 🙂

I was enrolled in Carmel with the Brown Scapular two weeks ago,
Oooh— I made an appointment with a Carmelite priest to be enrolled but I have to wait 2 weeks!! I’m so jealous!! 🙂

I’ve only recently learned about the existence of scapulars (what was it, one night two weeks ago? :banghead: ) but I really think Our Lady wishes me to wear it… I’ve researched some of the things we must do in order to receive the graces, and I even went out and bought one this Monday! But the thing is… Are they really that small? Maybe I got a mini version, because I would have thought they’d at least be the size of a fisted hand… but all the ones in the store were TINY! So I’m wondering if I have a real scapular or not… And I haven’t gone to a priest to be enrolled yet because I don’t want to make a fool of myself if it isn’t a real one!

I realize my entire post is a bit off-topic, but… well, we’re talking about scapulars, so… I have a question. If we want to substitute the rosary for the Little Office/Litany, do we have to mention it to the priest? And if so, how? (I’m sorry, I sound like a complete newbie…)

I haven’t worn a scapular since I was an altar boy in the 50’s. It was Our Lady of Mt Carmel parish in Pa.
Just wondering if you are referring to the parish near Pittsburgh?

Since the Church remembers Our Lady of Mt. Carmel today, I thought it would be nice to find out how many of us wear the scapular.
I am a cradle RC that used to wear one but haven’t for years. Thanks so much for starting this thread and I am llistening to the rather loud urgings of our Lord to get one! 🙂

Thanks again!

God Bless

Sandy

I was enrolled yesterday-- as Father Jon said when it was done,
“You’re in!”

drforjc, could you help me out? I just have a small question about the brown scapular, since you were recently enrolled… Can any priest enroll/invest us or must he be a Carmelite?

Yes, any priest. I personally had it done by a Carmelite but he told me any priest can do it.

I’d like to wear a brown scapular that I have but I’m not enrolled yet (still in RCIA) is ok if I wear it anyways? I’m devoted to the Green Scapular and it’s been a heaven send I had been praying for something that would help get/keep me closer to Christ when oen night Our Lady appeared to me in a dream holding a Green Scapular out to me didn’t need to think too hard to get the hint so I got oen and prayed the prayer everyday before leaving for work it even saved my life back in March when I was walking to workand was struck by a car as I crossed an intersection lying on the pavement I saw Our Lady looking down on me and knew she had been right behind me protecting (incedently this was also the turning point of me wanting to come into the Church)

I am so excited to respond to this question! Yes I wear 2 Scapulars, The Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and the Five-Fold Scapular. As a child I always wore one. Over the past several months the Lord has been miraculous in my life bringing me back to the Catholic Church. Around the first of November I felt such a strong urging to begin wearing a Scapular. I prayed for guidance and wisdom as to what I should wear. Then I was led to an online store that has absolutely beautiful Scapulars. (I would like to put a plug in for The St. John Fisher Forum, www.stjohnfisherforum.org )

The owners, Pat and John Dailey are wonderful people! I orderd my Scapulars and received them two days later.

Upon receiving my Scapulars, I went to my priest and talked to him, prayed with him, and he blessed both me and my Scapulars. Then I began to wear them, and I wear them all the time except when showering.

I can only say that my life is even more enriched by the wearing of these Scapulars. How you might ask? Since wearing them, I feel a constant, direct contact with my Lord, Jesus Christ through the power and intercession of Holy Mary and an absolute guidance of the Holy Spirit.

I also want to share this event. Where I live, we have been hit by a great deal of snow. Many cars have gotten stuck out front of my home, and I along with many other fine neighbors go out and help these people get back on their way. Two days ago a full size pick up got stuck pretty deep. I went out to help push the driver out. I got behind the truck and started pushing. I was standing in snow piled up to my knees. As the truck moved forward it eventually lost traction and the driver shifted into reverse and the truck began moving on me. With the snow so deep I could not lift my legs high enough or quick enough, and the truck was just about to ride right up and over me. Yet right before that, the driver stopped, shifted into drive, accelerated, and I pushed and off the truck went.

Now I gave absolutely no thought to this until a day later. Then it hit me that something really strange had happened. At first I was recognizing how stupid I was to be in that position, and then I realized that through Divine Protection, I was kept safe in this situation. Well yes, I was wearing my 2 Scapulars, and I am convinced that the faithful wearing of these allowed for me to stay close to God in prayer in all things and that I was protected.

I also wear a St. Christopher Medal and I always carry my Rosary in my pocket. Any time I reach into my pocket, there it is and I pray.

For me the wearing of my Scapulars is an outward sign of my faith, trust, and obedience to God. Oh, I fall short every day, but they sure do provide me the strength and inspiration to get right on my knees and ask for forgiveness and wisdom to carry on as God desires for me to do!

Sorry this is so long. To answer the question, YES! Wear a Scapular!

God Bless You and Make it a GREAT Day!

I am a newbie here and recently returned to the Catholic Church about 4 weeks ago. I don’t know much about scapulars, but my husband researched some on the internet so I can read up on them. I want to find out how to know what kind to purchase to wear? Are they in Catholic bookstores? He told me there are different ones and how does one know what order to get? Sorry, but I’m really new to everything, but I have such a deep love for all I’m learning about, this sounds like something I’d cherish to know more about and to wear also. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Now I can reply yes since I just bought a brown scapular yesterday after Saturday night Mass. Though I could not reach my parish priest in time to invest/enroll in the brown sacpular devotion yesterday, I plan to have that done tomorrow when I go to Mass.

I have tried to wear one off and on. But I have found the scapular pretty uncomfortable. Ridiculous I know. It twists around and often I have to readjust it. So I end up wearing it more often then not. Can I wear the Scapular Medal instead and do I need to be enrolled in the Brown Scapular first and wear that. I guess I just realized that I don’t think I have been enrolled. What is the Five-fold Scapular? I never heard of it. So I would take it off for the shower and I guess swimming. This may seem like a really ridiculous question but do I take the Scapular off during intimate times with my husband? During sports? I know someone who wucks her Scapular in her bra instead of wearing it around her neck. Are the graces the same?

Any ideas as to why he (Mel Gibson) chose this particular design?
Probably for the same reasons I did. It’s small with short cords. I have yet to figure out how to even wear one with long cords. How does it not end up around your waist or balled up under an arm pit?
Who do you think he’s crusading against?
Against? Maybe it should be "what is he crusading FOR?! 😉 That’s easy:
