I am 23 and Roman Catholic (it says so in my profile). I can’t think of any games I’ve played that are nearly as bad as many current or recent TV shows. I’ve been playing video games since I was very young and I have no desire to do anything violent outside of them and I cannot see how it would be possible for anyone to become violent just because of a video game. The games I’ve played that fall in the fantasy genre all promote goodness in favor of evil, no matter how violent they may be.
Otay… as long as itt doesn’t interfere with your relationship with Jesus…

I don’t think we should give up on TV. It can be a wonderful form of very cheap entertainment and can bring the whole family together in laughter and tears.

For people who are invalid or ill, it’s a way to stay in touch with the rest of the world. It can also be a great escape for people who are suffering and need an hour of fantasy. (I know, some people say that suffering people should never seek to escape from their pain, but I disagree with that.)

I think that during times of national crises (e.g., 9/11) and national triumphs (e.g., the Olympics, the Superbowl), television unites us all in the U.S.

I personally think that what TV does best is tell really good stories, both fiction and non-fiction. Story-telling is one of the most ancient forms of human amusement. JESUS told stories! Television CAN tell stories really well because it adds the visual to the verbal. It’s like seeing a book come to life. For this reason, I believe that television is a worthwhile form of amusement and relaxation.

Unfortunately, a lot of television doesn’t tell really good stories. The stories are raunchy or trivial. Sometimes the non-fiction stories are full of falsehoods.

I think if we choose to watch TV to relax and amuse ourselves, we need to be discerning and seek those shows that tell good stories, REALLY good stories that will contribute something worthwhile to your life. That doesn’t mean that all the shows have to be about religion. I personally think some of the best stories on TV are told on The Simpsons, and this show makes me and my husband laugh. It also gives us a lot to think about; e.g., the episode where Lisa finds an angel–excellent episode with a very fair treatment of religion.

I like Amazing Race when its on. I especially love the end when somebody wins and they are so happy. Not because of the money, but the accomplishment. Everybody appears so happy for the winners.

Uh, EWTN has this great show called Super Saints. It’s pretty low budget and that in itself makes it entertaining. But I tivo that and can always pull up the life of a Super Saint when I feel like watching.

Other than that, I don’t get to watch tv…I view The Office on netflix sometimes. That’s funny. Not everything is nefarious in nature, if you can use some discernment while viewing.

As for bad tv: Simpsons, Southpark are 2 I remember being truly irreverent.

dragontales
wiggles
hannah montana

can you tell I have been spending the summer with grandchildren?

You’re right, Joe. I must have blotted it out of mind. Oh yes, (Dysfunctional) Brothers and Sisters.

God bless,
Ed

I think it would have been easier to have named 3 decent shows. Almost everything on television is horrible. You wouldn’t believe the locks I had to put in place for the kids. Nearly every channel is locked.

I can’t pick just three:

Will & Grace
Jerry Springer
Muary
Oprah
Anything on RTV(I refuse to call it MTV)
The View
Family Guy
Sex and the City
Anything on Faux News
Anything on Spike TV
Anything on Lifetime

Ellen the DeGenerate Any reality show The View Oprah I could go on and on.

For me, Countdown with Keith Olbermann is without a doubt, THE WORST PROGRAM I’ve ever seen. Talk about bias! For all those far-Left “creatures” who whine about having balance in talk shows, this program has absolutely NONE. Mr. Olbermann seems to take aim at everyone from the current, sitting President and Vice-President on down to Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and anyone else who does NOT agree with Mr. Olbermann’s utterly IMbalanced viewpoint. :bigyikes: :banghead: :hypno: :dts:
The only thing I like about Countdown is “Oddball”. 🤷

The worst programs would be those that insist on inserting something perverted every 5 minutes.

The O’Reilly Factor
Anything on MTV
Pretty much everything on prime time

The only really good thing that airs regularly that I watch now is the World Over. I love that guy. He is so cool.
I love “THE WORLD OVER”, but please do tell: What in heaven’s name is so bad about the O"REILLY FACTOR?

to “flip the script”, here are some shows i like;
family matters.
full house.
intervention.
home improvement.
the first 48.
king of the hill.
the simpsons.
yo gabba gabba!

as for games, violence is only cool on videogames. i enjoy the legend of zelda games which has violence but i’m not going to put on some outfit, run around with a sword and try to fix broken mirrors. (twighlight princess game)

that coming from a 25 year old.

When I first ran into this thread there were only one or two shows I could think of. But after reading through this, I suddenly recalled many others. However, I guess I’ll just pick three that I think are the most pathetic.
  1. Wildboyz - Probably the most senseless and disgusting show on MTV.
  2. One Bad Trip - Another MTV reality show and is the reason why I’m not a party animal.
  3. Family Guy - I just find cartoon comedy shows like this to be pretty gross.
I don’t watch TV anymore (even on a cable TV). I just watch mostly anime stuff on the net. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to watch Ouran High School Host Club with my fan girl of a sister. 😃

Pinheads and Patriots – that’s the reason why the O’Reilly Factor is terrible.

i frankly feel that the bad not only out-weighs the good on TV but … well, demolishes it…

TV is un-Catholic and anti-Catholic

and definitely pro-sex… No. Pro Perverted sex…

As for bad tv: Simpsons,
Some of the earlier Simpsons episodes were very edifying and in fact, I remember one particular episode that made a very good way for a child to deal with a parent who was committing a moral wrong.

In Lisa vs. the Eight Commandment, Homer decided to steal cable. Lisa saw this as wrong, and was worried about their souls watching the ill-gotten gain.

She asked her pastor (protestant, admittedly) if she should turn Homer into the police for stealing. But then he said remember the eight commandment, honor thy father and thy mother. He said that the best way to to handle the situation was to not watch the offending technology herself. So she staged a protest and stood up for the not stealing commandment by not watching the TV. And I think she did it in a wonderful way of honoring her parents, too.

I do agree that the later episodes have become morally degenerate.
