What are the reasons I should (or shouldn't) become Catholic?

I saw this article and thought of you:

“Why Catholics Like Einstein” by George Sim Johnston

I believe in God, so that article really isnt for me.

I read it and there is much to agree and disagree with it. Yes much of the founders of modern science were christians, but that really doesnt prove in any way that catholicism is a religion from god. Its true that:
Why Catholics Like Einstein by G.S.Johnson:
Science, being a description of nature, can have nothing to say about what, if anything, is outside of nature.
But then there is really no evidence that there are anything outside of nature. For me God can easily be a part of nature. 🙂

We agree more than I thought. From what you said here:
learned people were very few back then. even then their ‘learned people’ is are so ignorant on many things. unlike today where most people are literate and has easy to every information. when evidence to every claims are sought & taken seriously and methodically/scientifically. thats why the religious is fast diminishing in free & prosperous countries. because people are realizing that current religions are asking too much or causing too much trouble even though their fantastic claims are baseless and unfounded.
it sounded like you had the typical modern bias that religion and science are incompatible. A review of history will show this is not true, and in fact, Christianity led people to the study the natural sciences.

There were (and are) scientists who are devout Catholics. A few of the modern writers who address this are Stanley Jake, Anthony Rizzi, and Kenneth Howell.

AgnosTheist;2707060]by that logic a lot of christian sects are catholic. even the evangelical ones. but then it all falls down on what the opinion on ‘body of christ’ is.
Ummm, so there are 33,000 denominations in every nation on earth? No? Then, they are not catholic, are they?
so? are you saying they are protesting against each other?
They all have doctrinal/interpretive differences, or they would not exist. Once you begin Protesting, where do you stop? When your ego is satisfied.
science, logic & philosophy had very little bearing back then.
UHHHH…

what you know exists mainly in your head. Dont underestimate atheists. Better yet look up “Buddhist Atheists”. AT LEAST, if anyone can die an atheist, they can. Obviously.
If you believe there is no next life, this life has no meaning. I think your posts tend to show that.
Original sin makes no sense at all. Thats why even jews dont buy it. 😃
They just get to pay for it.

You will have peace, for the first time, with Christ.

I agree, that it sounds like Agnos. In a prior post you (Agnos)wrote that people needed religion up to (I assume the Renaissance, or the Age of Enlightenment, you didn’t say) because they weren’t educated. Then, upon learning they were educated, you changed it to they didn’t know much about the sciences.

You also fits the description of all is truth, because you said any religion is as good as another, as long as you keep the Golden Rule. Which, by the way Agnos, you have not responded to my post showing this was Biblical and giving you several Scriptural verses to support my view.

Agnos, you don’t know yourself very well. I think you are closer to the Truth than you will admit to yourself. I don’t think you really believe a lot of what you have posted. You may have at one time, but I have seen a change the tone of your posts. You are not as energetic about your beliefs as you once were. It’s almost like you’re quoting empty responses that you believed in a former time. You are protecting yourself with empty phrases. 😃

As I said earlier, the leap is hard to make, but that is okay. Give yourself time, but stay here and keep listening.👍

I wish I could quote multiple posts, I’ll figure it out another day.

If you believe there is no next life, this life has no meaning.
My friend, you have got to talk to atheists more. They hold life as meaningful as the rest of us. Why, you think they should just drop dead?

The issue I raised is the fact that unbelief is rapidly spreading in prosperous & educated nations, and that education was a huge factor. And then you mentioned that jesus was educated, but then i pointed out how limited his education was.
You also fits the description of all is truth, because you said any religion is as good as another
only in matters of proof. otherwise some religions are better, and some are worst.
, as long as you keep the Golden Rule. Which, by the way Agnos, you have not responded to my post showing this was Biblical and giving you several Scriptural verses to support my view.
didnt I say ‘amen’? though its good to see it there, i dont think it was the bible writers who invented it.

time will tell. 🙂

Geez!! Sounds like things are turning a bit hostile here. That’s not the purpose of this site which is solely for an exchange of intelligent, objective dialogue between people who have divergent opinions on issues of faith, etc. Can we get back to a more civilized discussion? This post is not directed at anyone in particular, but everyone in general participating in this thread. Sign me, for today, “Just Observing.”

Agnos, I didn’t take your response as hostile. Did you take mine as such? 🙂

OF COURSE NOT! You Christine are one of the sweetest online chatmate I ever had. 🙂 The rest of the people here are very nice too.

Like what the old friend of mine, notself, said…the people here are gentle.

Which does nothing to disprove the prevalence of religion in Jesus’ day. I don’t believe it was a "limited " as you make it out to be. I contend it is materialism, not education in 1st world countries that is the root of the demise of relgiosity.

I disagree that proofs are equal in all sects of Chrisitianity.
didnt I say ‘amen’? though its good to see it there, i dont think it was the bible writers who invented it.
So I give you several quote from the Bible, but you say the Bible didn’t invent it. Who was the Bible quoting? The Scythian Barbarians?
time will tell. 🙂
Indeed.😃

materialism sure has its role to play in diminishing religion. people who have everything they need find very little reason to pray. and when people dont pray, they get desensitized to religion. and when desensitized they get more open minded. and when open minded then thats where education comes in.
I disagree that proofs are equal in all sects of Chrisitianity.
i wasnt really referring to the sects of christianity. but within, if you assume that the bible stories were true, then some are indeed more provable than the others.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethic_of_reciprocity#Confucianism

Confucius (551 BCE – 479 BCE), presented his version of the ethic of reciprocity with the word ‘shu’:

子貢問曰、有一言、而可以終身行之者乎。子曰、其恕乎、己所 不欲、勿施於人。
Adept Kung asked: “Is there any one word that could guide a person throughout life?”
The Master replied: “How about ‘shu’: never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself?”

Who was Confucius quoting?

You know, I think this Ethic of reciprocity is something that each person learns from growin up. I knew it before I heard the golden rule. If I’m nice to people, people are nice to me. If I’m rude to people, people are rude to me.

It’s true that this ethic of reciprocity is part of the “moral code” written on our hearts.

However, I find the “golden rule” is different than the reciprocity ethic. Confucious is wording this in the negative- do NOT do something to someone you would not want imposed on you.

Christ brings an even higher moral obligation that we might consider to be God’s law given from above. DO to others as you would have them do to you. This is more than refraining from hurting people so we can leave peacefully, it is about actively pursuing altruism. It ultimately does not come back to any benefit you will reap from it. It’s what Christians call “disinterested love”- to love someone for their own sake, for just being. That is how God loves us.

This is also why Christ asks us to pray for our enemies.

can you give practical examples as to how the positive form is better than the negative form?

I agree SOME people tend not to pray if they have it all. But I disagree that religious people have closed minds, and therefore unable to be educated, which I what I see you implying. Correct me if I’m wrong.
King Louis of France and other saints were wealthy, educated, and very pious.

The quotes which I provided you were written earlier that 551 BC. Leviticus is approximatley 1,500 BC.
You know, I think this Ethic of reciprocity is something that each person learns from growin up. I knew it before I heard the golden rule. If I’m nice to people, people are nice to me. If I’m rude to people, people are rude to me.
Do you think the Barbarian Hords, Huns, 6th century Turks, the Vikings, even modern terrorist Muslims (as opposed to peaceful) would agree with you? What I mean is they won’t practice it, and you say that God told you it didn’t matter what you believed as long as you lived the Golden Rule. Why should we believe in the Golden Rule because you said so. It has to be bigger than that.

But I disagree that religious people have closed minds, and therefore unable to be educated, which I what I see you implying. Correct me if I’m wrong.
that wasnt my intention. no, religious people are not necessarily closed minded. its just that less religious people are more openminded. just look at the muslims, who are more reasonable, the moderate muslims or the fundamentalists & extremists?
The quotes which I provided you were written earlier that 551 BC. Leviticus is approximatley 1,500 BC.
there are simply no evidences which suggests that confucius got that idea from the hebrews. the earliest recordings of jews in china was during the han dynasty, somewhere around 200 B.C.
Do you think the Barbarian Hords, Huns, 6th century Turks, the Vikings,
the golden rule is for individuals, not for entire nations. just look at how the hebrew nation treated the amalekite nation. its nowhere near what you quoted me. right?
even modern terrorist Muslims (as opposed to peaceful) would agree with you?
islam have rules that overrides its peaceful messages.
Why should we believe in the Golden Rule because you said so. It has to be bigger than that.
Hey I was just parroting what greater people have said. And look at this…

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_rule
  • It is arguably the most essential basis for the modern concept of human rights. *
nothing beats the modern concept of human rights.

It’s true that this ethic of reciprocity is part of the “moral code” written on our hearts.
God wrote it on our hearts, which is why our hearts will not rest until they rest in Him. (I believe St. Augustine wrote this)

Agnos, I was thinking about you this morning at mass. I was reviewing the posts on this thread over the last two weeks. I realized that they centered around you. You make some good arguments, as in Aristotlian genre. Others, such as Contarini, engaged in them with you. It suddenly came to me that the major theme of the posts on this thread over the past few weeks was care for you. Yes, good argumentation and research were presented, but not only for the argumentation in itself or to be “right” and you are “wrong.” But it was to bring you to the joy of Truth.

Some day you will back on this and become overwhelmed by the amount of concern and prayers out here right now for you. And we only know you here. We never met you or spoke to you on the phone.

I believe you are seeking Truth, are having an inner turmoil, whether you realize it or not. There are forums that are a better fit for the place in which you find yourself, but you keep coming back to this one. This lowly group which has unending faith in Jesus and the Holy Catholic Church.

May you someday find the Peace of Christ. Amen.
